The Possessive Alpha -
Chapter 27
Alpha Charles & Luna Olivia
“Did you do it?” Luna Olivia asks her mate as he walks into the office, his body dripped in sweat. “What the hell happened?” she asks when she finally notices how disheveled Alpha Charles looks.
“Damon and I got into a fight,” Charles grumbles as he sits down; unlike his son, he isn’t a young and virile Alpha but instead getting closer to retirement each day.
“You were supposed to warn Damon away from Elle, not attack him,” Olivia scolds him as she grabs bottled water from the mini fridge hidden away in one of his cabinets.
“We both know that Damon, or Slade, wouldn’t have reacted unless I pushed him,” Charles explains, “he is a typical unmated Alpha male. He wasn’t going to get it without a threat of violence.” Charles finishes before drinking the entire water bottle in one go.
“Charles,” Luna Olivia says, her voice growing quiet as she looks at her husband, guilt washing over her face, “are we doing the right thing?”
“I don’t know if this is the right decision for the kids,” Charles sighs as he runs his hands through his hair in frustration, “but we made an unbreakable vow to Elle’s parents. We have to trust their plan.”
“And what happens if it doesn’t work?” Olivia demands as she paces back and forth in front of the desk, chewing on her nails, a nervous habit she’s struggled with her entire life.
“We have to trust that the Goddess has the best intentions for the kids,” Charles says as he pulls his mate into his lap, resting her head on his shoulder while rocking her back and forth.
Damon POV
“First, we need to figure out what the hell it is your parents promised Elle’s parents,” Matt says as he picks at the blades of grass next to his legs, causing both Andrew and I to look at him in surprise. Matt isn’t usually the first to devise an intelligent plan.
“What?” He says, shrugging, “I am not a complete i***t. I know I wasn’t always the nicest to Elle, but I was only protecting my sister now that she has her mate. Elle could very well be our future Luna…” He finishes looking into my eyes, and an unspoken understanding passes between us. Slade is preening that Matt referred to Elle as our future Luna, but a part of me is still unsure.
“You’re getting a little ahead of yourself, Matt. She isn’t my mate, and she isn’t my Luna,” I grumble, but I can see the look they exchange like they don’t believe me, and Slade has already started pouting at my words.
“So why are you doing this? If you don’t think she is your Luna?” Andrew asks; I know he knows the answer. He is just to trying to bait me into saying what he already suspects.
“So that Elle can get the type of love we all deserve,” I say, not looking at Andrew, but it doesn’t matter. I know he can see through my bullshit response.
“Alright,” Andrew responds, not believing my answer, but he knows me well enough to know I won’t elaborate more on the subject.
“So, how do we find out the details of the unbreakable vow?” he asks as he plays with the grass underneath his legs.
“We have to find the witches who performed the unbreakable vow, I guess,” I sigh, knowing how impossible that’d be. Most werewolf communities don’t interact with them any longer. In the past, every pack had a coven they worked closely with. But as the packs modernized, with feuds between us growing, many did away with them. Only a handful work with witches, but they keep that information close to the vest- as many wolves frown on the association.
“How are we going to do that?” Matt asks, the thought overwhelming. Not many people would have that information. My father might, but there is no way he’d give that to me.
“Well, what pack is Elle from?” Andrew asks like that’s the most obvious way to figure out our plight. Like everything else revolving around Elle, it’s not simple.
“I can’t remember. I am trying to remember what my father told me all those years ago when they brought Elle home, but it’s fuzzy. I remember everything else about that night but not what pack she is from.” I say, feeling frustrated that I cannot remember. ‘Slade, do you remember what pack Elle is from?’ I ask him hoping his ironclad memory comes in handy, but he remains silent. I figured he’d be more involved in this, but he hasn’t said a word since the conversation started.
“Probably some spell the witches cast on Elle,” Matt mumbles, causing Andrew and me to look at him in shock for the second time this afternoon. “Seriously, I am not the i***t you guys think I am. Think about it, if Elle’s pack is a pack that has a coven, and her parents are trying to protect her, they probably cast a lot of spells to hide Elle’s true nature until it’s time to reclaim her pack.”
“Makes sense,” Andrew adds, “Also makes sense why Elle’s Alpha energy was so easy to hide. But why is it wearing off?” he questions. If spells protected Elle to mask the Alpha energy, why wasn’t it working anymore? ‘It’s because of her wolf,’ Slade grumbles, retreating to where he came from.
“It’s her wolf,” I pass the message along to Andrew and Matt. “Think about it; She is a firstborn Alpha female and the b***d Luna of her pack. She’s powerful, which must be hard to mask without frequent upkeep.”
“Speaking of Elle,” She mind-linked; apparently, she has been trying to get in touch with you,” Andrew says, a smirk on his lips, his eyes mischievous. Matt starts laughing as he mutters, “not our future Luna, my a*s.”
“I know. I have been blocking her,” I growl at both of them, already annoyed at their childlike antics when we have important s**t to work through.
“Well, she is quite demanding and won’t let it go until you talk to her, Alpha,” Andrew says, his tone almost like a challenge wondering if I’ll give in, but a part deep within is happy she cares enough to check in on me. Slade is over the moon, howling like a young lovesick pup.
‘Elle,’ I say, opening the mind-link between us and feeling it snap into place, ‘I am fine. I’ll be back in time for dinner.” As quickly as the link formed, I slammed it shut again.
“Things squared away with your girlfriend?” Matt asks, a lightly teasing tone in his voice, but it only causes me to growl at him forcing his hands up in submission. “Fine, I got it. Not your girlfriend and not your Luna.” I am about to punch him when Andrew interjects himself between us.
“Enough,” Andrew intrudes, with a sternness a father uses to scold his children, “I think I know someone who can help us figure out which pack Elle comes from. But you’re not going to like who it is.” he finishes, giving me a look that causes my stomach to clench, dreading the name about to come out of his mouth.
“Theo,” Andrew explains, ripping the bandaid off, his body tensing in anticipation of my reaction. I would rather die than go to Theo for help- I am not giving him the satisfaction of watching me beg.
“No,” I argue, “Absolutely not. There has to be another way.”
“Andrew’s right,” Matt responds in defense, “Theo’s father works for the council; they’ve traveled to many of the packs in the United States. He’ll be our best hope for finding the ones with covens.” I know there is a logic behind the decision to ask him for help, but the thought does nothing but leave an acidic taste in my mouth.
“Fine,” I agree begrudgingly, knowing it’ll be harder to get the information we need without Theo’s inside knowledge on other packs.
“Good,” Matt says, clapping a hand on my back, “now let’s get back to the pack house. My mom just linked me to let me know dinner will be ready in twenty minutes.”
Helping each other up from the grass, we leave the field through trees and make our way back to the house for Melanie’s celebration.
