The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 96
Dahlia was unceremoniously shoved into the car with a swift kick. Her head collided with the seatback, making her dizzy, and her hair was yanked hard. "Ah!" she screamed as she was dragged into the vehicle. Her head was forced upwards to meet a pair of icy eyes. It was Evelyn, back to settle the score.
The moment Dahlia realized it was Evelyn, any trace of panic and fear evaporated. She sat up defiantly, her eyes challenging as she faced Evelyn, who looked worn out and pale after a day and night of torment. Evelyn was lucky to be alive! Dahlia couldn't imagine Evelyn getting out! It had to be Rosa who set her free!
Seeing Evelyn's bandaged fingers stirred a mix of resentment and grudging admiration in Dahlia. She remembered Evelyn's desperate pleas from the night before and felt a thrill of triumph but kept her face neutral. With a smirk, she taunted, "Evelyn, what are you doing? Let me go! You know how much Charles loves me. He'll be livid if he finds out you've been released and are causing trouble again.
"And when he's mad, who knows what he'll do to you? Wasn't a day and night in the basement with rats enough for you?"
Dahlia's eyes sparkled with smug satisfaction. She was confident in her standing with Charles after last night. She aimed each word to pierce Evelyn's heart, hoping to see her crumble. However, Evelyn showed no fear at the mention of the basement and rats. Her expression was icy, and her gaze was cold.
If this had been the Evelyn who once loved Charles deeply, Dahlia's words would have cut deep. But last night Evelyn had begged Charles in a moment of terror, and he had turned his back on her to appease Dahlia, leaving her to her fears. At that moment, the last flicker of affection for him was snuffed out.
The boy who had once been a beacon of light in her life was dead to her.
Evelyn sneered, grabbing Dahlia's jaw and shoving her back against the car door with a thud, pinning her in place. Speaking of last night, Dahlia You really went all out, didn't you? You
you were even willing to hurt
own daughter to frame me."
"Evelyn, what are you talking about? I love Sandy. How could I hurt her?" Dahlia retorted fiercely, trying to sound righteous. "It was obviously your twisted plan to hire someone to harm Sandy and me. That person even pointed at you, and still..."
"Dahlia, I'm not recording, and Charles isn't here, so drop the act," Evelyn cut her off with a cold laugh.
She tossed Dahlia into the backseat with a scoff, then cleaned her hand that had touched Dahlia with a tissue before tossing it disdainfully into the trash.
Humiliated, Dahlia's expression darkened. As Evelyn moved on from last night's topic, Dahlia's brow furrowed slightly, unsure of her next move.
