The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 97
Could she have gotten it all wrong?
The car's interior was deathly quiet. Dahlia watched Evelyn, who sat there cool as a cucumber, staring out the window. She couldn't figure out what Evelyn was plotting. She knew the rules: whoever broke the silence first was the one to lose their edge. But Dahlia couldn't keep it in any longer.
"Evelyn, what are you up to?" she blurted out.
Evelyn, this woman she'd crushed under her heel for years-along with her brat of a kid-had always been her plaything. So why was she acting all high and mighty now?
"You'll find out soon enough," Evelyn replied, her voice as bland as ever. She didn't give Dahlia a straight answer. She just gave her a look filled with something Dahlia couldn't quite read. This sparked a flicker of fear in her chest.
Swallowing her rising panic, Dahlia gritted her teeth. "Evelyn, if you dare lay a finger on me, Charles won't let you get away with it!"
Evelyn's gaze was unsettling, and Dahlia was genuinely rattled. Her mind was a battlefield of conflicting thoughts. One part of her insisted Evelyn wouldn't dare touch her. She'd always used Charles' affection for her to set traps for Evelyn, both before and after going abroad. Not once had Evelyn struck back. This time wouldn't be any different.
But another part of her couldn't shake the fear that Evelyn might've been pushed over the edge and was willing to do something crazy.
"Evelyn, talk to me. What do you plan to do with me?" Dahlia demanded, struggling to move forward from the back seat.
"Shut her up." Evelyn's voice was calm as she kicked a shoe-cleaning rag toward the back seat.
The bodyguard grabbed Dahlia, yanking her back as he bent down to pick up the filthy rag.
"How dare you!" Dahlia's eyes widened in shock, glaring daggers at the bodyguard. "Charles is the head of the Jenkins family. You better think twice about who matters more to-him-me or Evelyn."
Everyone knew she was the apple of Charles' eye in the Jenkins family. The guy in front of her, with his suit and alt, was clearly one of their bodyguards. Was he really bold
enough to side with Evelyn?
But her words didn't even make him flinch. He stayed cold as ice, clamping down on her jaw with an iron grip.
"Ugh! How dare you!" Dahlia's face
turned ashen as she hissed through gritted teeth. She tried to back away but was powerless against his strength. With a swift move, he forced her jaw open. The rag was shoved into her mouth.
Dahlia was used to Charles treating her like royalty and had never been handled like this.
"Gag!" she choked, disgusted. Her mouth was stuffed tight. The bile that rose in her throat was forced back down, leaving her looking ghostly pale. Unable to speak, she could only glare daggers at Evelyn. Her eyes burned with a hatred that wished Evelyn to dust.
Evelyn didn't give her a single glance, letting Dahlia stew in her own mental turmoil and fear of the unknown.
The car finally pulled into an upscale villa neighborhood in the Capital, stopping at a particularly grand property. This place belonged to Rosa.
Evelyn couldn't just end Dahlia, but with Dahlia in her clutches, she sure as hell wasn't going to let her have an easy day.
