The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 95
Evelyn lay on the hospital bed, her face pale as a ghost.
"How's she doing, Doc?" Rosa asked, her voice thick with worry.
"She fainted from an irregular heartbeat, but thankfully, she got here in time. Any later, and it could've been fatal," the doctor replied.
The mention of "fatal" sent a shiver of anger through Rosa. Her chest heaved with emotion as she slammed her cane against the floor. "That bastard!" she spat through gritted teeth.
Charles knew Evelyn was terrified of basements, but he still locked her up for ages. He may as well have been trying to kill her!
"Madam, please, take care of yourself," Tony urged, stepping forward with concern. However, his words did little to soothe her.
It wasn't until a cold hand gently rested on Rosa's that she paused. A raspy voice called out softly, "Rosa..."
Rosa froze, then quickly clasped the hand, rubbing it gently between her palms to warm it. "Eve, I'm here. Tell me, does anything else hurt?"
Evelyn's eyes welled up slightly. She shook her head softly. "No. Grandma, I'm hungry."
Rosa had been about to persuade Evelyn into eating something, worried that Charles' cruelty might leave her heartbroken. After all, she loved Charles deeply.
To her surprise, Evelyn spoke up for herself, saying she was hungry.
"Tony, now, get Eve something to eat."
Tony rushed to set up a small table, arranging a spread of delicious dishes and utensils.
As Evelyn tried to prop herself up, a sharp pain shot through her fingers, making her face blanch.
Her gaze fell on her left hand, wrapped in bandages around the middle three fingers. Memories of the basement flooded her mind. Her eyelids drooped. There was a chill in her gaze.
"Eve, be careful with your hand," Rosa said tenderly, holding Evelyn's left hand and blowing on it gently.
"Grandma, it doesn't hurt," Evelyn assured her with a smile as she sat up with Rosa's support.
That smile brought tears to Rosa's eyes. As she watched Evelyn, her heart ached even more. How could it not hurt? Fingers are so sensitive, and Charles caused all these injuries.
Evelyn took the cutlery from Tony and began to eat. After finishing her meal, she felt her strength slowly returning. She looked up at Rosa's sympathetic gaze and softly asked, "Grandma, could you do me a
favor?"
In Sandy's Hospital Room, Charles took the phone from Tony, and Rosa's frosty voice came through loud and clear. "Charles, if you still consider me your grandma, you better get back here right now." She hung up without another word.
"Charles, Sandy's out of the woods.
The doctor says she's fine now. I'm here to take care of her, so you don't need to worry. Rosa must have something urgent to discuss with
you, Dahlia said with understanding.
Once Charles left, Dahlia could slip away to clean up the mice and maybe enjoy Evelyn's misery. Perhaps Evelyn had already been scared out of her wits. Dahlia couldn't wait to get back and see for herself. "Call me if anything comes up," Charles said, leaving with Tony.
Once Charles was gone, Dahlia
arranged for someone to look after
ตอน
Sandy and got ready to head back to Greenrose. Just as she stepped outside to hail a cab, a car pulled up beside her. A tall man hopped out, and before Dahlia could react, he skillfully pinned her arms behind her.
