The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 41
She struggled desperately but couldn't break free from the oppression pinning her down. She could only watch helplessly as the sharp object descended. At the critical moment, the door was flung open from the outside. The three people inside clearly didn't expect anyone to come. They were visibly taken aback.
Evelyn seized the moment to withdraw her hand. In the instant she pulled her hand back, the leader of the group also reacted, continuing to thrust down without hesitation. The sharp object stabbed into the ground, emitting a grating noise. "What are you doing?" Mr. Rogers saw the situation clearly, turned red and bellowed angrily.
Before he could rush in, a figure stepped into the cell faster than him. He moved swiftly to them women inside. This man was known as the most cultivated gentleman of the North City but was now losing his composure.
His face darkened, and he lifted his leg and kicked the leader fiercely.
"Ah!" The woman let out a piercing scream of pain and fell heavily to the ground. The other women, already frightened by Brooks' invisible force, let go of their hold and scrambled back.
Brooks crouched beside Evelyn, took off his gray coat, and gently draped it over her. He saw the injuries on Evelyn's face, and the coldness in his eyes deepened.
His large hand gently supported her arm as he helped her up. While trying to suppress the turmoil in his heart, he tenderly asked, "Are you hurt?"
Still in shock, Evelyn came back to her senses upon hearing Brooks' question. "No." She shook her head lightly.
Hearing she was uninjured, Brooks' tensed body relaxed slightly. "Can you walk on your own?" Brooks asked again.
Evelyn nodded. Brooks carefully helped her up from the ground and led her out of the cell.
Mr. Rogers coldly swept a glance at the officers following behind and hurriedly caught up. Brooks spoke succinctly, "Process the bail."
...
It was 8 p.m. when she left the police station and got into Brooks' car.
"Turn the heater up to the max." As soon as they got in the car, Brooks instructed the driver. The heater quickly warmed up, and Evelyn finally felt some warmth in her hands and feet.

Brooks drove her all the way back to Maple Garden. After escorting her to the door, he handed her some ointments for her bruises and inflammation that he had bought on the way. "You should get some rest."
"Thank you, Mr. Brooks."
Evelyn entered her house and took a hot bath. Standing in front of the mirror, she examined her swollen face.
She had slapped Dahlia a few times, and Charles had people return the favor twofold.
Gripping the ointment tightly, she let out a breath and started to apply it to herself.
After applying the ointment, she
prepared to go to sleep. She was et
half-asleep when her phone rang. She opened her eyes to see an unfamiliar number.

"Delivery." verbet
Hearing it was a delivery, Evelyn didn't get up to open the door. She lived alone and had to be cautious.
She answered the phone, "You've got the wrong address. I didn't order any delivery."
"It's a meal ordered for you by a Mr. Brooks."
