The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 42
Mr. Brooks?
Evelyn rose to answer the door and collect her delivery.
Surprisingly, the food that was delivered was exactly to her taste. A wave of warmth crossed Evelyn's otherwise cold heart.
She took out her phone, intending to thank Brooks. However, upon unlocking her phone, she remembered they hadn't exchanged numbers. As she was about to put her phone down, she noticed the note on the delivery order. At the bottom was a phone number with a message: [Call me anytime if you need anything.]
Evelyn didn't make the call. Instead, she texted him: [Mr. Brooks, I received the delivery. Thank you.]
Brooks replied succinctly: [No problem.]
Evelyn didn't want to impose further, so she put down her phone and started on her delivery.
Downstairs, Brooks sat in his car, saving the number.
...
At the Hospital, Dahlia was dressed warmly. Only her legs were exposed, showing several cuts.
Though the cuts were not life-threatening, they were filled with shards of glass and took hours to clean properly.
She lay on the hospital bed, pale, thinking of the phone call Charles had made outside, her hands clenched beneath the blanket.
Evelyn had only been detained a few hours, and Charles had already called his assistant, Aiden, to go to the station.
The door creaked open, making Dahlia instantly look pitiful. Charles walked out after putting Sandy to sleep.
Dahlia started to speak up for Evelyn with teary eyes. "Charles, it's just a small injury. I'm fine. Evelyn has been detained for a few hours now, so perhaps we can let this go."

"I was also too emotional at the moment, which is why I called the police." Charles' tone softened considerably as he looked at Dahlia. "I'll handle this. You rest well."
His phone rang just as he finished speaking. It was Aiden calling.
Charles immediately went to the balcony to answer, asking in a deep voice, "Has she calmed down? Hand her the phone."
Aiden was standing at the police station entrance, having just explained Charlie's intention not to press charges.
But they were a step too late.
"Mr. Jenkins, Ms. Evelyn has already been bailed out by Mr. Brooks."
Brooks' name made Charles' expression darken. A storm was brewing in his eyes.
...
Evelyn had been drenched in cold
water while in custody. Although Brooks had someone bring a hairdryer to dry her hair quickly, her body's resistance was too weak recently, and she caught a chill.
Not long after lying down to sleep, she developed a high fever. Her
body felt as though it were in an oven. Sweat soaked her temple's, her brows were furrowed, and her pretty face was flushed red.
Evelyn was in discomfort. Her lips parted slightly.
"Uh..." Pained moans continuously escaped her lips.
A large hand covered her forehead, its coolness a relief to Evelyn at that moment. She instinctively wanted to get closer.
Her forehead was pressed tightly against Charles' palm. The hot breath she exhaled was scorching on his palm. It felt ticklish like a feather brushing over his heart.
