The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 40
She sat on the chair, her hands on her knees. She couldn't stop herself from nervously clenching them together.
In the quiet space, Evelyn's senses were heightened, and her body uncontrollably trembled. Panic spread within her.
No one came to take her statement; they just locked her up. It wasn't until several hours later that the door finally reopened.
"Come with me." A male police officer came in and took her from the detention room, locking her in a cell.
When she entered the cell, Evelyn realized something was amiss. But the door already clanged shut. In the dimly lit cell, a chill swept over her. Evelyn couldn't help but shiver as a chill ran down her spine. She felt as if she were being watched by a venomous snake.
Just as she was about to turn around, someone suddenly grabbed her hair from behind and yanked it hard.
Evelyn moaned in pain. "Let go!" She reached back to grab the other person's hand and kicked fiercely at their shin.
The person loosened their grip when hit in the shin, allowing Evelyn to break free. She quickly retreated, putting distance between them.
"What are you doing? This is a detention center!"
"What are we doing? Of course, we're here to give you a warm welcome. You hurt someone you shouldn't have without any remorse. Today, we will teach you how to behave."
Evelyn's pupils contracted sharply. The person Evelyn shouldn't have hurt was... Dahlia.
Therefore, the people avenging Dahlia were... Charles' associates.
"Hold her down," the leader commanded.
Two others approached Evelyn. Evelyn resisted with all her might. But alone, she couldn't stand against the three of them and was quickly overpowered. Her hair was grabbed, and she was dragged to a corner of
the cell.

In the corner of the cell was a bucket of ice-cold water, into which they forcefully submerged her head. The cold shocked Evelyn, and she struggled fiercely.
Somehow finding strength, as she
was pulled from the water, she
broke free from one of them, grabbed the woman who had submerged her by the hair, and forced her head into the bucket of ice water.
The bucket overturned with a crash.
The leader was furious. "Are you all useless?" She exclaimed angrily.
The other two quickly restrained Evelyn again, pressing her firmly to the ground.
The leader approached, raised her hand, and slapped Evelyn hard across the face. Evelyn's head spun from the blows, and blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
She bit her lip hard, stifling the cry of pain that reached her lips. In the cold winter night, her hair was soaked, and a bone-deep chill swept over her from head to toe. However, nothing was colder than her heart. Charles would actually go to such lengths for Dahlia.
The leader didn't stop there,
signaling to the other two with a
look. She hadn't forgotten their main objective. They immediately understood, pressing Evelyn's hands to the ground. en FindNovel
Evelyn's pupils contracted sharply. She suddenly looked up.
The leader, holding a piece of metal, squatted down.
Evelyn looked horrified as the woman drove the metal piece down hard into her hand.
The intention was clear. She wanted to cripple Evelyn's hand.
"No!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.
