Return Of The Prodigy
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 178

"I'm a general," repeated Adam.

Katie stood rooted to the spot as if petrified.

A general?

This makes no sense... How could there be a general that is still in his twenties?

Katie could not believe her ears. For a moment, she even wondered if she was dreaming.

Actually, not even in her wildest dreams could she have thought that her husband was a general.

Adam sighed. "Everything I said is the truth. Other than being a general, I'm also the Commander of the Black Snake Brigade, which puts me in charge of all the companies that are under the brigade's control. I cannot tell you more as there are state secrets involved."

Katie had yet to recover from her shock. She kept looking at Adam with an expression of disbelief. After quite a while, she finally spoke. "Is that why you had that black credit card?

"Was this the reason Paul Booker and his crew were so scared of you?

"Or why you could come back unscathed after offending El Coco in the capital?

"I guess we could hold our wedding in Sky City not because of Mia but because of your connections.

"When I got that contract from Byron Group, was it you who helped me in secret?"

All those bizarre events that Katie could not understand were now starting to make sense. She had long guessed that Adam had connections with important people, but she did not expect his background to be this shocking. Katie found herself at a loss for words when she thought of Adam's identity. She felt happy, shocked, and very small.

People said that she was a smart businesswoman, and that Adam was trying to climb the social ladder by marrying into her family. Only now did she discover that she was the one climbing the social ladder by marrying Adam!

Katie could not help but recall her grandfather, Dave, and cousin, Matilda. People like them dreamed of currying favor with the rich and the powerful. If they were to discover that Adam was a general, their eyes would pop out of their sockets. She did not forget her own mother, who was, until recently, hell-bent on marrying her into a rich family.

Many memories of the past flashed through her mind. Because she knew that Adam was a general, when she raised her head to look at Adam this time, she found it hard to meet his eyes. She no longer had the air of a strong businesswoman and was more like a meek little rabbit.

"You kept this information secret for so long, why did you decide to tell me all of a sudden?" she asked eventually.

Adam took a deep breath and said, "Something happened today that made me change my mind.

"A man who had watched over me since I was a child died in front of me. His family members were hunted down and killed due to the connection we had. He and his granddaughter were imprisoned for several years, and I didn't even know about it until a while ago. The only thing I can do now is avenge him.

"However, I find myself wondering if there's any point in taking revenge as those who have died aren't coming back no matter what I do. Is this the result of me biding my time and waiting for too long?"

Katie remained silent. She knew that Adam was not finished.

Adam continued, "By biding my time I was able to find some peace, but the people around me suffered for it. I'm their only hope, and they've been waiting for my return for a long time. I can't make them wait any longer. I don't want them to suffer because of me. "The first reason I'm telling you this is that you're my wife, so I wanted to be honest with you. The second reason is that I wanted to let you know that you don't have to be afraid of anyone. I have enough power to protect you and our daughter. You two are the most important people to me, and I won't hesitate to destroy all the enemies that try to hurt you!"

Katie looked at Adam in a daze. She was touched by his words, and she felt that there was no woman who would not be moved by this kind of speech. Her eyes became red and pooled with tears. She really wanted to kiss Adam because words alone were not enough to express what she was feeling right now.

However, she restrained her emotions and said, "Thank you. I feel blessed to have someone like you in my life. I'm sure you can give me and Annie a life free from worries, but this is not the life I want. I don't want to be a canary trapped in a cage. "Although your power is enough to take down every enemy that comes at me, I would like to deal with them with my own strength. Is that fine with you?"

Adam had expected Katie's reply. After all, despite her gentle appearance, she was a stubborn woman.

If not for her stubbornness, she would have given in to the pressure during the six years he was gone. Yet, she raised their daughter alone and withstood everything the Hartleys threw at her, not conceding or remarrying despite the pressure. This was the kind of woman Katie Hartley was!

"I won't interfere as long as they play within the rules and don't make things hard for you," said Adam.

Katie rolled her eyes and said, "Everyone has to suffer hardships, and even the best of us have moments when they feel down. This is just how life is." After a short pause, she added, "I can only wonder how much you suffered when you were in the military and how many dangerous tasks you undertook to become a general.

"Now, it's my turn to grow and face all kinds of hardships. I believe that as long as I give my best, I'll be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with you one day. I don't want to simply be known as the wife of a general. "Adam, will you wait for me?"

Adam smiled and said, "Yes, I will."

Katie smiled and said, "Mr. General, if there's nothing else, you can leave. I have to get back to my work."

"Ms. Hartley, may I kindly ask for a leave of absence?" said Adam.

Katie blinked in confusion.

Adam said with a gloomy expression, "I want to take care of Ray's funeral."

Katie kept silent for a moment and asked, "Do you want me to come with you?"

Adam did not reply and simply shook his head.

Katie walked up to Adam and hugged him. "Annie and I will be waiting for you at home.

"We'll always be there for you."

Adam felt warmth in his heart. He lowered his head and kissed Katie.

The next day, Adam took Ray's remains back to his hometown.

-

Carson County, Lancashire.

Adam stood before Ray Hernandez's coffin, his expression cold. "Did you discover anything?"

"Yes, the Moodys live in Lancashire," Black Dragon replied. "They're a second-rate family, and their leader is a certain Dray Moody. They live at No. 19, Mountainside Estate."

Adam nodded and glanced at Sandra, who was kneeling before Ray's coffin. "I'm going to avenge your grandfather. Do you want to come with me?"

Sandra's body quivered, but she shook her head.

Adam no longer spoke and turned around to leave.
