Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 453 Sneaking Out to Meet
Alaric headed upstairs to the study and shut the door behind him.
It took a moment for Stellan to snap out of it, then she turned to Caspian, Harry, and Elisa, asking, "Has your dad been up to something lately?"
They exchanged glances. Harry spoke up, "Isn't he busy dealing with his illness?"
"Yeah, Dad wouldn't dare to be busy with anything else, or Mom would give him a hard time," Elisa chimed in.
Give him a hard time?
Stellan thought to herself, 'All I did was say a few words to him because he got into a fight and got soaked yesterday. Is that what they call giving him a hard time?' "Earlier, you guys were sneaking around in the study with your dad. Is there something you're not telling me?"
The three looked a bit guilty. Caspian quickly said, "Mom, we wouldn't dare!"
"Yeah, we really wouldn't," Harry added, standing up and wiping his mouth with a napkin. "We're done with breakfast, Mom. Bye, we're off to school."
With that, the three bolted. After witnessing Stellan's fierce scolding of Alaric yesterday, they didn't want to risk provoking her, especially Harry.
If Stellan found out that Harry was helping Alaric monitor Far East International and investigate Tommy's background, she'd lose it.
What was supposed to be a nice family breakfast suddenly felt like Stellan was the only one left at the table.
With Cormac at the hospital taking care of Rowena, Stellan really should head to the office, but before leaving, she went upstairs to the study to have a word with Alaric. When Stellan tried to open the door, she found it locked from the inside.
Stellan had no choice but to withdraw her hand and head downstairs. She told Mia, who was tidying up the dining table, "Mia, I'm going to the office. If Alaric needs anything, call me." Mia replied, "Okay, Stellan, don't worry about work. I'll take good care of Mr. Knight."
Stellan nodded and walked out of the house.
This time, Stellan didn't use a driver. She drove herself. While waiting at a red light, she stopped the car and let her mind wander.
If Alaric was hiding something from her, it had to be about Marigold, and what Neil said on the phone last time made it all clear.
But wasn't that case already closed? Why was it still being investigated? Was the closure of the case a lie?
Just then, the car behind started honking like crazy. Stellan snapped back to reality, started the car, and her phone suddenly rang. She tried to answer it, but her hand slipped, and the phone fell. There was no way to deal with it while driving, so she had to ignore the phone and keep going.
The call was from Mia because as soon as Stellan left, Alaric also wanted to go out.
Seeing him about to leave, Mia quickly advised, "Mr. Knight, are you going out? Stellan insisted that you should rest in bed."
"I'm bored at home. I'm just going for a walk. I'll be back soon." With that, Alaric went out the door. Mia, being cautious, quietly followed and saw that Alaric drove off. Since Alaric drove off, it was clear he wasn't just going for a walk, so Mia called Stellan.
Stellan picked up the phone and called Mia back after parking in the underground garage of Nexus Innovations.
"What's up, Mia? Is Alaric feeling okay?" Stellan asked, worried.
"Mr. Knight seems fine. But right after you left, he went out too. He said he was going for a walk, but he drove off. I thought it wasn't just a walk, so I wanted to let you know." Stellan had repeatedly told her to keep a close eye on Alaric. If he went out and something happened to his health, Mia couldn't bear the responsibility, so she called. "Got it, Mia."
After hanging up, Stellan was fuming. After fighting and getting soaked yesterday, he already had some cold symptoms. Today, instead of resting at home, he went out alone. In other words, if it wasn't important, he wouldn't have gone out. So what was he up to?
Alaric went out to meet Hestia. He had Silas keep tabs on her, and to Alaric's surprise, Hestia didn't disappear or contact anyone. After leaving the Knight family, she found a job as a waitress at a restaurant, working regular hours every day. From the start until now, there was nothing suspicious about Hestia.
Alaric went to the restaurant where she worked, found the boss, and said he had known Hestia for a long time and wanted to invite her to a meal. The boss didn't refuse.
In a fancy private room, Alaric and Hestia sat across from each other. Hestia was as reserved as ever, like a servant in front of her master, avoiding eye contact out of respect. "You know why I'm here, right?" Alaric asked first.
"I know," Hestia replied calmly. "Because I went to the police. I told Neil the truth about what I saw."
"Do you know the legal consequences of perjury and malicious slander?" Alaric's tone had a clear note of intimidation.
"I may not have a formal education, but I know those are serious crimes. But I didn't slander anyone. I told the truth, so I'm not afraid."
Hestia's resolute demeanor left Alaric momentarily speechless. After a while, he spoke again, "After all this time, you come to tell me that you've been having nightmares, afraid of my mom's ghost coming back to haunt you. Is that why you went to the police?"
"Yes, but not entirely," Hestia said with some grievance. "Mr. Knight, I came to you before because my conscience was tormenting me. I kept dreaming of Mrs. Knight coming to me in my dreams. But you didn't believe me and fired me." Hestia added, "If I left quietly, wouldn't that prove I was lying? So I thought it over and decided to go to the police to prove I wasn't lying."
Her words left Alaric stunned again. She spoke with such confidence that it didn't seem like she was lying at all.
At that moment, Alaric admitted he was a bit scared.
Just then, his phone rang, startling him. He looked down and saw it was Stellan calling.
