Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 443 Hope Their Marriage Won't Change
Stellan didn't want to cry. She felt like she didn't deserve to. After all, wasn't she the one who caused Marigold's death? No wonder Alaric couldn't stand to look at her. But man, she felt awful inside and really wanted to cry. When her phone rang, she quickly put it on silent, worried Alaric might hear it.
Seeing it was Cormac calling, Stellan stepped back into the house. "Hey, Cormac."
"Is Alaric back yet?"
"Yeah, he is. Got stuck in traffic, so he was delayed. He's in the shower now."
"Good to hear he's back," Cormac said. "It's late, you guys should get some rest."
"Will do."
After hanging up, Stellan checked the time. It was already past ten. How long was he planning to stay in the car tonight?
She quickly went to the bathroom to wash her face, not wanting Alaric to see she'd been crying when he came back.
Not long after she finished, Alaric walked in. "Are Caspian, Harry, and Elisa asleep?" he asked.
"Yeah, they went to bed on their own around nine," Stellan replied, then asked, "Why'd you come back so late, Alaric?"
"Cormac's in a bad mood, so I stayed with him at the hospital for a bit." Alaric explained.
Stellan didn't call him out on the lie and just went along with it. "Yeah, with everything going on, Cormac must be feeling down. How's Griffon? Is he really that sick?" "Yeah, it's bad. He's only got a few days left."
"That soon?" Stellan, being a doctor, knew that even terminal cancer patients usually had more time.
"Maybe he's been sick for a while. The cancer's spread everywhere, and there's no saving him. Honestly, staying alive now is just suffering," Alaric said.
"True. Terminal cancer patients do suffer a lot in the end," Stellan said, then quickly added, "Alright, it's late. Let's get to bed. You have your treatment shot tomorrow." "Okay."
Alaric's treatment days were getting fewer, and they were starting to see a bit of hope. Nothing could go wrong now. Stellan had to take good care of him.
Alaric went to the bathroom for a quick shower, while Stellan got into bed alone. She turned her back to him and pretended to be asleep when he came in. Seeing she was "asleep," Alaric turned off the light and lay down beside her. But unlike before, he didn't pull her into his arms. Instead, he turned his back to her. Stellan felt a bit distressed. She forced herself to sleep, trying not to overthink.
The next morning, Alaric got up early, as usual, to make breakfast.
"Daddy, didn't we say to let the maid do it? Why are you cooking again?" Elisa said, a bit annoyed.
"Because Daddy has to get his treatment shot today and will be bedridden for a few days. So, while I still have the energy, I want to take good care of you." Alaric replied patiently. "When you're all better, you'll have plenty of time to take care of us. But for now, you can't," Harry said firmly. "During the treatment, you need to focus on getting better and nothing else." Harry then pulled Alaric out of the kitchen, leaving Alaric no choice but to let the chef take over.
After the chef whipped up breakfast, the family of five sat down to eat. As they were finishing up, Caspian asked worriedly, "We're going to school today. Who's gonna take care of Daddy when he gets his treatment shot?" "Don't worry about it. I'll be home to take care of your daddy," Stellan said.
Alaric chimed in, "No need. Cormac's at the hospital with Griffon and can't leave. You should go to the company. I've been in treatment for a while now, and the side effects are getting weaker each time. I don't need special care." "But we won't feel right if no one's looking after you. Let Mommy stay home. The company's big enough; it won't fall apart if both Mommy and Uncle Cormac aren't there."
"Rook, can't you say something nicer? Why do you have to mention collapse?" Stellan questioned.
"Alright, my bad. I just don't feel comfortable leaving Daddy alone at home."
"There are maids and plenty of servants here. How am I alone? You guys just go to school and don't worry about anything else."
"Alright." the three kids obeyed, though still worried.
"Okay, go lie down. I'll give you your treatment shot," Stellan said to Alaric.
"Alright."
Stellan gave Alaric his treatment shot and stayed by his bedside afterward.
An hour later, Alaric said, "I don't have any major side effects now. You should go get busy. Don't worry about me."
"Alright, call Mia if you need anything."
"Got it. Go ahead, sweetheart."
Stellan loved it when he called her that, but thinking about last night made her feel uneasy. She was scared that their close bond would drift apart and not be the same as before. She hoped it was all just her overthinking and that it would never happen.
Cormac spent the entire night at the hospital. Griffon remained unconscious, yet his discomforts were evident, leaving Cormac utterly exhausted from a sleepless night. When Rowena walked into the ward, she saw Cormac dozing off by the bedside. Seeing him like this made Rowena's heart ache. "Cormac, I'll stay here. You go get some sleep."
Seeing Rowena, Cormac immediately became alert and asked anxiously, "Didn't I tell you not to come to the hospital?"
"I can't rest at home either. It's okay, I'm not that fragile. Go get some sleep. Your eyes are bloodshot from staying up all night." "It's just one night. I'm fine. Rowena, you should go back."
As soon as Cormac finished speaking, Griffon, who had been unconscious, started to stir.
Rowena looked at him on the bed and felt a subconscious fear when she saw his eyes on her.
Cormac quickly shielded Rowena behind him. Griffon, with a weak and hoarse voice, said, "This is..."
Griffon could no longer complete a sentence. He began struggling to breathe again, gasping for air.
