Mommy,We Got a Husband
Chapter 442 Why Does It Feel So Far When We're So Close

Aurora had no clue why Cormac was so worked up, but she figured he had his reasons, so she racked her brain to remember.

"That day, my dad said a lot," Aurora began. "He told me he loved me a ton and wanted me to take care of myself. He also mentioned that there are still good people in the world." "He said if he died, someone would surely look out for me. Then he mumbled something I couldn't catch. He seemed really sad."

"So I got really sad too. I cried for ages, and after I cried myself to sleep, he left and never came back," Aurora continued.

Talking about this stuff was like ripping open old wounds for Aurora. Cormac felt a stab of guilt, but he knew they needed the truth.

"Aurora, you said your dad told you there are still good people in the world and that if he died, someone would support you?" Cormac asked, picking up on something. "Yeah, he did."

"Was he sure about it?"

"Yes!"

Matthew had been so sure when he told her that someone would support her after he was gone. Maybe the deal was to guarantee Aurora's safety?

If that was the case, it would have been easy to convince a dying father. But who was behind it?

"Did anyone support you after your dad passed away?" Cormac asked again.

"No, after my dad died, I met you. You've been the one supporting me all this time, no one else."

No one else? If Cormac's hunch was right, it meant the other person had broken their promise.

Deceiving a dying person is utterly despicable and heartless!

"Uncle Cormac, did something happen? Why are you asking me all this?" Aurora asked, looking puzzled.

Cormac felt another pang of guilt. If Aurora knew her dad had tried to trade his life for her future, she'd be devastated.

From a father's perspective, Matthew's actions might seem noble, but as another victim's family member, he'd be hated.

If Matthew hadn't agreed back then, Orion wouldn't have died. However, Cormac wouldn't blame Aurora for her father's actions.

He'd never tell Aurora about this, so he just smiled and said, "It's just because my father asked about my sister earlier, I needed to know more about that night. Nothing else, don't worry." Aurora was sharp. She knew Cormac had more to say but wasn't saying it, so she didn't push.

"Alright, you have school tomorrow. Get some rest and try not to visit the hospital too often, okay?" Cormac said gently.

"Uncle Cormac, are you staying here tonight?"

"Yeah."

"Then you should rest more. Don't wear yourself out taking care of your dad. Don't worry about Aunt Rowena; I'll look after her tonight." Because of her tough upbringing, Aurora always worried about everything. Even at a young age, she seemed to carry a lot of responsibilities.

"She can handle herself. You just focus on resting and hitting the books."

Just as Cormac finished talking, his phone buzzed. It was Stellan. Seeing the call, Cormac said to Aurora, "It's late. I'll have the driver take you home so you can get some rest." "Okay, goodnight, Cormac."

Cormac smiled and waved at her. After she left, he picked up Stellan's call. "Hey, Galatea."

"Cormac, is Alaric still at the hospital?" Stellan sounded worried since it was already dark and he hadn't come back yet.

"Alaric? He left a while ago. He should be home by now. Hasn't he returned?" Cormac's concern grew.

"No, he hasn't. It's my fault; I took his phone earlier, and he left in a rush today, so I forgot to give it back. Never mind, Cormac, I'll go look for him. You go ahead with your stuff." "Alright, let me know as soon as you find him."

"Got it, Uncle Cormac."

Stellan felt like kicking herself. How could she be so forgetful? Alaric had driven himself today, and she forgot to give him his phone. And Alaric hadn't asked for it either, which was odd. Stellan hurried out to find him. Alaric couldn't have gone far after leaving the hospital. Could he have had an accident? Or suddenly felt unwell? Had a relapse? Thinking about it made Stellan's heart race. The more she thought, the more scared she got. What if he had a relapse while driving?

Stellan was on the verge of panic. She had told him so many times to take a driver, but he never listened and always liked to drive himself. All these bad thoughts made Stellan's legs feel like jelly. She rushed to the garage to get her car, but then she saw Alaric's car not far away. Seeing his car, Stellan's heart sank. Alaric's car was parked by the roadside not far from home. Although it wasn't very close, Stellan could see it.

His car window was half-open, and Alaric was sitting in the driver's seat, smoking.

Seeing this, Stellan's eyes filled with tears. She felt really sad and a bit hurt.

She had been so worried, but he had already arrived and chose to stay in the car rather than come home.

It reminded her of all those relationship experts' analyses. When a guy preferred to stay in his car rather than go home, it meant he didn't want to face his wife or his marriage.

Home had always been a warm place. When he started avoiding it, did it mean he was getting tired of it?

She could understand Alaric's feelings. After visiting Griffon in the hospital, he must have thought of his own parents.

So now he was feeling down. He preferred to sit alone in the car, smoking to drown his sorrows, rather than come home and talk to her.

Maybe he couldn't even bring himself to speak because she was indirectly responsible for Marigold's death. So he wouldn't tell her, wouldn't share his inner sadness and helplessness with her. But they were husband and wife, supposed to share everything. Why had it come to this?

Stellan leaned weakly against the corner of the wall. Neither she nor Alaric could see each other. So close, yet so far.
