Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 435 I'm Going to Be a Dad
Whenever Stellan heard the name Marigold, it felt like a punch to the gut. She really regretted that impulsive decision to rush to Marigold's birthday party back then.
Before, whenever Stellan and Marigold had a spat, Alaric always had Stellan's back. But now, with Marigold gone and Stellan feeling partly to blame, Alaric must be holding some serious grudges, right? Stellan looked at her kids, her face all serious. "What else did your dad say then?" she asked.
Caspian looked worried. "Not much, he just kept calling for Grandma. He seemed really upset and in pain. No matter how much we called him, he didn't respond. It freaked us out."
Stellan put down her fork and turned to Caspian, Harry, and Elisa. "I can't dodge the blame for your grandma's death. I can't face your dad and talk about it directly. If he brings it up with you, you need to comfort him, okay? Losing a mom is never easy, got it?"
"Got it, Mom. Don't worry, if Dad talks to us about it, we'll definitely comfort him," Caspian said.
Stellan nodded. "Alright, let's eat."
After dinner with Caspian, Harry, and Elisa, Stellan took a quick shower and headed back to the bedroom. Alaric was still asleep. She slipped into bed next to him, trying to be super quiet, but still woke him up.
"Finished eating?" Alaric asked, his voice soft in the dim light.
"Yeah," Stellan replied. "Aren't you gonna eat tonight?"
"No, I'm not hungry," Alaric said, pausing before asking, "Does Galatea have any meds that can help me sleep without dreams?"
Stellan's heart sank. 'So now, does he dream of Marigold every time he closes his eyes?' she thought.
She hesitated and then said, "That kind of medication is really bad for you. You're still in treatment, so I don't recommend it. But if you really can't sleep, you can take a small dose."
Alaric nodded. "Okay, get it for me tomorrow."
Alaric had always been tough. The night Josep treated him, the pain was almost unbearable, but he toughed it out. Now, he was asking for meds to help him sleep without dreams. Psychological pain was way worse than physical pain. "Alaric," Stellan started, her voice shaking a bit. She didn't want to bring up this touchy subject, but as his wife, she couldn't stand seeing him bottle up his feelings. "Are your dreams always about Marigold? The kids told me you kept calling her name when you were upset. I'm sorry, Alaric. It's all because of me. If you have any thoughts or resentment toward me, let it out. Your health is already not great; don't keep these emotions inside."
Alaric shook his head. "No." How could he vent it out? Even if he did, what would change? He was on his own.
Then he said, "There's nothing to vent. I have no resentment. Alright, let's sleep."
After that, Alaric closed his eyes. This left Stellan feeling really uneasy, like there was a storm brewing inside her. She wished they could just have a fight, that he would blow up at her. This avoiding-the-topic thing felt so powerless. Stellan had no choice but to keep quiet and close her eyes. She barely slept that night and she knew Alaric wasn't sleeping well either.
In the days that followed, they kept things polite but distant, which was pretty unsettling. After finishing this round of treatment, Alaric had a week off before the next one, so he was in a good mood.
Every time Stellan came home, he was holed up in the study with the door locked. She had no clue what he was up to in there, and he didn't say, so she didn't ask.
One day, Alaric surprisingly had an appetite, so Stellan decided to cook herself. While she was busy in the kitchen, Harry excitedly whispered to Alaric, "Dad, I found all the detailed background info on Tommy!"
"Really? Harry, you're awesome!" Alaric said, his eyes lighting up.
Harry pretended to grumble, "Of course, it took me a lot of effort. I didn't expect it to take me a whole week."
"Harry, you're showing off, aren't you?" Elisa teased.
"That's his thing, always bragging about how great he is," Caspian added with a grin.
Harry pouted, "You two are wrong. A week might not be enough for you to find anything, but for me, it's too slow. After all, our IQs are different." Caspian and Elisa both shot him a cold look. "Enough already!"
"Alright, come eat," Stellan called out.
They replied in unison, "Coming!"
So the family of five sat down at the dining table. As usual, the four took care of Alaric, constantly serving him food.
"Neil said you're too thin now. You need to eat more meat and gain back the weight you lost," Stellan said.
"Exactly," Elisa chimed in, "Daddy will look even more handsome if he gains some weight!"
"Alright, I'll eat more then," Alaric, who rarely had an appetite, decided to eat more today.
Halfway through the meal, Stellan's phone rang. It was Rowena. She answered, "Hello, Rowena."
Rowena said happily, "Stellan, I have good news. I'm pregnant!"
Hearing this, Stellan was momentarily stunned. When she realized what Rowena said, she asked in disbelief, "Are you sure?"
"Yes!" Rowena was also very excited.
Stellan was overjoyed. "So soon? It feels like you just started trying. Congratulations!"
Rowena replied, her voice glad. "I didn't expect it to happen so quickly either. I thought it would take at least a year. My period was late, so I took a pregnancy test, and it was positive. I couldn't believe it. Cormac was even more anxious. He was afraid it was a false alarm, so he took me to the hospital for a check-up late at night. He's anxiously waiting for the results now."
"Cormac must be over the moon. Congratulations! I'll come see you tomorrow," Stellan said.
Rowena laughed, "Alright, I have to go. Cormac is back."
Rowena hung up and saw Cormac running over with the pregnancy test results, grinning from ear to ear.
Cormac murmured, "It's true!" Seeing the result on the pregnancy test, he couldn't believe it. He was afraid it was a false alarm and insisted on going to the hospital for a check-up.
Now, holding the official test results, he was overjoyed. He picked Rowena up, his eyes shining with tears of joy, and exclaimed, "Rowena, you're amazing! I'm going to be a dad!"
