Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 434 There's No Flesh Left
Hearing Caspian's words, Neil felt a warm glow inside; Caspian was really considerate.
"Don't worry, I won't disturb your dad's rest," Neil said quickly, flashing a reassuring smile.
Elisa stepped forward, her eyes full of gratitude. "Thanks, Uncle Neil. When my dad gets better, you're welcome to come over every day."
Neil nodded, touched by her sincerity. "Alright."
After chatting with Caspian and Elisa, Neil quietly pushed the door open and walked into Alaric's room. The last time they saw each other was at Marigold's funeral.
It hadn't been long, but seeing Alaric now, Neil was shocked.
"How did you lose so much weight in just a few days?" Neil asked, his voice full of concern. Seeing Alaric so thin made his heart ache.
Alaric gave a faint smile. "I'm okay," he said lightly, then asked, "Neil, what brings you here? Any progress on the case?"
Neil pulled out his phone and brought up some surveillance footage. "There's some progress," he said, showing Alaric the video. It was from the night Todd died, capturing a blurry figure near Ambrose's house.
Neil pointed to the screen. "The surveillance was a bit far and the image is blurry. I've watched this footage a thousand times, using every technique to enhance it, but it's still unclear. The person in the footage has similar clothes, body shape, and even walking posture. But look closely-do you see that? Is this person smoking?"
Alaric squinted at the screen, leaning in to get a better look. "It seems so," he said, trying to make out the details.
Neil pointed to the figure's hand. "Look! After smoking, he flicks the ash with his thumb, index, and middle fingers. This should be a long-term habit. Does Ambrose have this habit when he smokes?"
Alaric frowned, deep in thought. "I've known Ambrose for a long time, and I've never seen him smoke."
Neil's tone turned serious. "The person in the video, judging by the habit, should be a long-term smoker. If Ambrose doesn't smoke, it proves that the person in the video isn't him. In that case, he's just creating an alibi, which further proves that he's the real killer of Todd."
Alaric thought carefully again. Ambrose really didn't seem to smoke. And it indeed looked like a smoking gesture in the video. He nodded slowly. "This can be considered evidence. Neil, what do you plan to do? Summon him?"
Neil shook his head. "No, let's keep him for now. Stuart has higher-ups behind him. Let's wait for clues about the mastermind."
"Alright, we can also tell Stuart about these findings, let them turn against each other. There will always be some gains after their infighting," Alaric suggested.
"Yes." Neil looked at Alaric, concern etched on his face. He sighed and gently grabbed Alaric's arm. "Seeing you so thin now, I can't bear to talk about the case with you."
Neil's grip tightened slightly as he went on, "Look at you, You've lost a lot of muscle. When you feel better after the treatment, you must eat more." Alaric nodded. "I know."
Neil patted Alaric's arm reassuringly. "Alright, stop talking," he said softly. "I don't have much to do today, so I'll stay here with you. You just rest, don't worry about me."
Neil was an easygoing guy, no need for too much formality with him, but Alaric still felt guilty about the last time he had two maids make false statements.
Suddenly, he remembered Hestia telling him she saw Stellan push Marigold, which made him uneasy again. Although Alaric had Silas keep an eye on her after she left, he couldn't restrict her freedom. What if Hestia impulsively called Neil about it?
"Neil," Alaric began.
"What's up? Go ahead," Neil replied.
"Any new cases recently?" Alaric asked, trying to gauge if Hestia had said anything.
Neil shook his head. "Even if there were new cases, I couldn't tell you. Just focus on getting better and don't worry about anything else."
"Alright," Alaric said.
Neil was a principled guy, always sticking to the law. If Hestia really told him, Alaric worried he would reopen the case.
"Alright, you rest. Don't worry about me; I'll make myself comfortable," Neil urged.
Alaric smiled. "Okay."
Although Caspian, Harry, and Elisa could handle things independently, they were still just kids. Since Neil had nothing to do today, he decided to stay and keep Alaric company. Alaric was very grateful; Neil stayed with him almost the whole day. When Stellan came home from work, Neil was still there.
"Neil?" Stellan said, surprised to see him.
Neil responded with a smile, "I wasn't busy today, so I came to see Alaric. I was really shocked to see how thin he is. Stellan, you really need to take good care of him." Stellan nodded earnestly. "Of course, I'll do my best to make sure he's healthy and strong the next time you see him."
"Alright," Neil said. "I'm leaving now. Take care of him."
"It's dinner time. How can you leave? Stay and eat with us," Stellan said quickly.
Neil shook his head. "No need, I don't eat dinner. I'll see myself out." With that, he quickly walked out.
"Neil stayed with me all day," Alaric said, looking at Stellan.
Stellan remarked, smiling, "That's great, Alaric. Although you don't have many friends, the ones you have are solid. Having friends like Cormac and Neil who truly care about you is worth it." "Yes." Alaric smiled, feeling truly content. He was also quite happy today because Neil had gathered evidence. Not arresting Ambrose now was just a delaying tactic; he was already in the bag.
"I called the kids. They said you were in a lot of pain." Stellan took Alaric's hand and asked tenderly, "How are you feeling now?"
Alaric replied, "They took care of everything meticulously. I'm much better now."
Seeing Alaric in good spirits, Stellan said, "I have good news too. The construction site's reopening application has been approved, and work started today."
Alaric chuckled, "Really? You're amazing. You accomplished something I couldn't as soon as you took over my position. Great job!"
Feeling a bit guilty about Alaric's praise, Stellan said, "Stop it."
"From the bottom of my heart. Alright, take the kids to dinner. I'll sleep a bit more," Alaric said.
"Okay." Stellan bent down and kissed his lips, then turned and walked out.
"Kids, thank you for your hard work today," Stellan said to Caspian, Harry, and Elisa as she sat at the dining table, her voice gentle.
Elisa looked down, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "It all right," she replied softly. "But seeing Daddy in so much pain, I feel my heart ached. For someone as strong as Daddy to call out for his mom, it must have hurt a lot." Stellan's eyes widened. Alaric called out for Marigold when he was in pain?
