Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 421 Why Is He Suddenly Calling?
After wrapping up the call with Ambrose, Alaric tossed his phone aside and shut his eyes. Man, he was wiped out and hurting.
He'd been half-asleep when Ambrose's call yanked him out of dreamland. He checked the time, then grabbed his phone to ring up Silas.
Silas picked up right away. "Mr. Knight."
"Ambrose called, said he wants to make up for it with some land. You deal with it," Alaric said.
Silas replied, "Got it."
"What about Galatea?" Alaric asked, still worried. "She went back to oversee things. The higher-ups giving her a hard time?"
Silas answered, "Ms. Storm's in a meeting with Mr. Nash right now. I'll fill you in once it's done." Alaric said, "Alright."
Just then, Stellan took Alaric's old seat. At the start of the meeting, she apologized to everyone, "Sorry about the mess at the jewelry company's site. Alaric can't come back 'cause he's not feeling well, so I'll be stepping in for now. Hope you all can back me up. If anyone's got issues, speak up."
The higher-ups had their gripes about Stellan, but since it was Alaric's call, they kept quiet.
"Since Mr. Knight decided this, we don't have any objections. And honestly, the site accident wasn't your fault, Ms. Storm. But our request to resume work got shot down. You need to fix that," one of the higher-ups said.
Another exec added, "Yeah, the accident's already hurt us. The delay's making it worse."
Stellan said, "Don't worry, I'll handle it. We'll be back to work in three days, guaranteed."
Cormac was floored by Stellan's promise and shot her a look of disbelief.
"Since you said so, we are relived," the higher-ups agreed.
"If there's nothing else, let's wrap this up," Stellan said, and they all got up and left the room.
Cormac followed Stellan to the office and said, "Why'd you make that promise?"
Stellan replied, "You saw how it was. If I didn't, would they have let it go?"
"True, but it's risky. We've sued some rumor-mongers, but the buzz they created is causing a stir. The authorities are feeling the heat and might not greenlight our work resumption so fast," Cormac said, concerned. Stellan said firmly, "I get that, but Alaric trusts me and put me here. I can't just play it safe. Don't worry, Cormac. I'll hit up the relevant departments tomorrow."
"Alright, test the waters tomorrow. If it looks bad, we'll figure something else out," Cormac said.
"Okay." Even though Alaric wasn't around, Stellan felt better with Cormac by her side.
Today was her first day back as acting director. She needed to get a grip on the company's situation, so she spent the whole day going through documents and reports.
By the end of the workday, she still hadn't finished going through all the reports, but her brain was fried. Plus, she was stressing about Alaric, who'd just gotten a treatment injection today.
Stellan grabbed her car keys and sped home. Caspian and Harry had boxing classes, and Elisa loved tagging along, so they'd be back later.
When she got home, she immediately asked Mia, "How's Alaric doing today?"
Mia replied, "He's been sleeping most of the time and hasn't eaten much."
"What?" Stellan quickly walked into the bedroom. Just like Mia said, Alaric was lying there with his eyes closed, looking super uncomfortable.
"Alaric?" Stellan called softly.
Hearing her voice, Alaric slowly opened his eyes. Trying not to worry her, he put on a brave face. "How was your day at the company? They give you a hard time?"
Silas had already filled him in, but Alaric was still concerned.
Stellan said, "You set it up yourself. Would they dare? Plus, Cormac's there too. You just focus on getting better and don't worry about me."
She checked his forehead and asked, "Mia said you haven't eaten much today. Feeling extra crappy?"
"I'm okay, just a bit weak and not very hungry." Alaric smiled. "It's been like this before. I'll be fine in a couple of days."
Seeing him like this broke Stellan's heart. She wished the next four months would fly by.
"Oh, by the way, some good news. You don't need to look for land to build the hospital. Ambrose said he'd give us a piece of land for free," Alaric said. "Ambrose is giving us land for free? Why?" Stellan was shocked.
Alaric replied, "He's feeling guilty. If he's giving it, we'll take it."
Getting free land didn't make Stellan happy; it made her mad. "You contacted Ambrose behind my back again. Alaric, I'm seriously warning you, during this period, you are only allowed to focus on recovering. There are only four months left, and it's crucial. If you worry about anything else, I'll confiscate your phone!"
"Okay, I was wrong. I won't do anything for the next four months," Alaric said, handing over his phone to reassure her. "Here, take it."
Seeing him being so obedient made Stellan feel a bit uneasy. "You can keep your phone for now. But if you do it again, I'll confiscate it."
"Alright." Alaric smiled again and then said slowly, "Don't worry about me. Go have dinner. The kids will eat before they come back. Don't worry about them."
Stellan didn't need to worry about the kids. She was worried about Alaric.
Stellan suggested, "How about some soup?"
Alaric refused, "No. I'll just throw it up. Don't waste food. Go eat, be good."
"Okay," Stellan agreed reluctantly. Before leaving, she glanced at him again, visibly uncomfortable.
If Josep were here, Stellan would feel more at ease. But with Josep gone, she was genuinely worried. Just as she was thinking about it, her phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Josep. Stellan wondered, 'Why is Josep calling suddenly?'
