Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 23 Ready to Meet the Folks?
"As an impostor, you only need to know this much, don't ask questions you shouldn't!" Alaric reminded her with a cold voice.
Galatea cursed him silently before snapping the file shut, replying with assurance, "I've committed all these details to memory. Don't worry, I won't let you down." "Good," said Alaric. "Now it's your turn."
"My turn for what?" she asked, feigning ignorance.
"Don't play dumb with me."
Was he talking about her background? The one filled with stories she could never share with the world?
"It's pretty simple. My parents died, and my husband passed away when I was pregnant. Now, it's just me and my children," she divulged.
'Both parents dead? And a deceased husband?' Alaric thought with disbellef.
Galatea couldn't help but let out a mischievous laugh at his shocked expression, taunting, "Scared? If you think I'm cursed, you could always find someone else. Despite your flaws, you've got money and power."
Before she could finish, Alaric lunged at her, and she instinctively retreated, her back slamming against the car door.
"You're too inexperienced to scare me. Remember, if you don't want to end up dead, you'd better behave," he warned her.
He was a miracle of medicine, having woken up from a three-year coma after a severe injury.
"Pervert!" Galatea shoved him away, swiftly smoothing out her clothes.
"Drop the act. You wouldn't have agreed if it weren't for the money," he charged.
'If it weren't for his fiancée's useful status, which could help me find my son, I wouldn't even glance at him!' she thought.
Of course, she couldn't voice the truth.
"Right," Galatea said, her eyes curving into crescents and her lips lifting into a sweet smile. "So, for the money's sake, I'll play along."
The car entered an upscale residential neighborhood, and Galatea gazed out the window. Seeing the lavish homes triggered a flood of emotions. She used to live in a luxury villa back when the Storm family was thriving when her father and that man were still around.
Alaric caught the wistful look in her eyes.
"We're here," he announced, breaking her reverie. Galatea snapped back to reality and stepped out of the car.
Alaric immediately slipped into his role, giving her a subtle cue. Understanding his signal, Galatea took on the charade and gracefully looped her arm through his.
"Alaric is here," a servant announced upon seeing them.
At that moment, Galatea felt a twinge of intense nervousness, the most crucial part was her role as an impostor.
"Alaric's here," Griffin Nash said with an easygoing smile spreading across his face as he strode over with unmistakable enthusiasm, his wife, Mrs. Ravenna Nash, trailing behind him.
Griffin, though amiddle aged man, carried himself with a striking posture and a distinguished presence uncommon amongst his peers.
Mrs. Ravenna Nash had a kind face without the air of aloofness one might expect from a lady of her standing.
Upon seeing a woman at Alaric's side, both Griffin and Ravenna were momentarily shocked before exchanging a surprised glance.
It was a moment that made Galatea squirm with embarrassment.
"After completing the greetings, Alaric gave a straightforward introduction, "This is Galatea, my girlfriend."
Rushing to mirror the courtesy, Galatea tilted her head slightly and chimed in, "Hello, Mr. Griffin Nash, Mrs. Ravenna Nash."
Only recently had Orion come home in tears, complaining that Alaric had another woman. At first, they didn't believe it, thinking Alaric must have been speaking out of anger due to some mishap Orion caused.
They had specifically asked Alaric over this time to clear up any misunderstandings, but to their surprise, he brought a woman with him!
"Alaric!" Hearing the servant announce his arrival, an excited Orion hurriedly touched up her makeup before heading down the stairs. But her excitement ceased as she caught sight of the woman with Alaric, and her complexion changed dramatically. Sensing potential awkwardness, Ravenna promptly called out:
"Orion, Alaric has brought his girlfriend. Come down and say hello."
'Greet his new girlfriend?'
"Alaric, Galatea, please have a seat," Griffin urged the pair.
With uncertainty flickering across her face, Galatea glanced at Alaric, who gently guided her by the hand to the couch. Unnoticed by them, Griffin sent a surreptitious look to Orion's way, silently pleading with her to keep her cool. Settling down beside them on the sofa, Griffin assured Galatea, "We've watched Alaric grow up since he was a boy. Ravenna and I are like his own parents, so think of this as your own home, Galatea. There's no need to be formal."
Whether their intentions were genuine, Galatea couldn't tell, but their amiable demeanor certainly left a positive impression on her. "Thank you, Griffin," Galatea responded with a natural smile.
Staring at her from such a close distance, Griffin Nash furrowed his brow and couldn't help but ask, "Galatea? Have we met before?"
The question startled Galatea. Years ago, when she was still the heiress of the prestigious Storm family, known to some as Arizona's leading socialite, she was rarely seen in public due to studying abroad. Her name was familiar to many, yet few had personally seen her, especially now that she had assumed a new identity.
Even Alaric, the scion of a wealthy dynasty, had no recollection of her, and she did not remember having met Griffin Nash on any previous occasion.
"Maybe I just have one of those common faces? I've been abroad for a long time; you couldn't have possibly seen me, Mr. Nash."
"Is that so?" A sheepish smile crossed Griffin Nash's face. "Then I must be mistaken."
"Alaric, where did you find this woman from? Even if you're trying to breakup with me, there's no need to humiliate me by bringing someone like her into the picture!" Orion stormed over, pointing an accusatory finger at Galatea. "Orion, that's no way to behave!" Mrs. Nash had tried to stop her in vain.
"It's okay. I understand that Orion is upset. I brought Galatea here today to clear the air," Alaric said as he wrapped an arm around Galatea and pulled her closer. "She isn't someone I've found randomly. We've been together for quite some time."
"You're lying!" Orion refused to believe it.
With a calm demeanor, Alaric explained to Mr. Nash, "Others might not know the nature of my relationship with Orion, but you're well aware. I've always been grateful to her, but gratitude doesn't turn into romantic feelings.
'All these years, the charade was for the child's sake, to avoid hurting him. I've kept my relationship with Galatea quiet, but unfortunately, Orion and Caspian aren't meant to be. Since my marriage with Orion has been a sham, and my son won't accept her, there's no point in continuing this charade. I want to pursue my own happiness, and I hope you can understand that."
