Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 125 Are you Reluctant to Let me Die?
Before Alaric began, he took a light breath through his nose and slowly looked up at the ceiling. He gradually started telling the story.
"My parents had an arranged marriage between two prominent families. They didn't have any feelings for each other, and they had been arguing for as long as I can remember. Later on, my father had an affair, and their relationship completely soured. At that time, I was still immature, but the idea of marriage being terrifying was ingrained in me. Their marriage ended in failure, but they still arranged one for me from a young age- a childhood betrothal with Orion. I was particularly opposed to it. Afterward, when I had the opportunity to join the military, I went without hesitation to escape this family."
"After joining the military, I felt like I was reborn. I found a career that I genuinely liked and was willing to protect with my life. However, my father passed away shortly after. My mother pressured me to leave the military in all types of ways. She even directly reached out to the higher-ups, so our commanding officers were also in a difficult position."
"At that time, there was an international organization called the Astral Innovations Group, which was particularly famous. Under my mother's pressure, my commanding officer never allowed me to know of that organization. He always advised me to come back. At that time, I wrote a military order- if I could dismantle Astral Innovations, no one could make me leave the military. If I couldn't, then I'd willingly take off my uniform and leave. The higher-ups agreed and promised that if I really did it, the highest levels of the military would personally talk to my mother."
"So, for the next few years, I constantly dealt with this organization. The longer it went, the more I realized they weren't as simple as I had imagined. They were like a never-ending black vortex. It spent many years of painstakingly-searching for the organization's more important base, and I led the team to eliminate the terrorists."
"I'm not exaggerating when I say that the gunfight lasted for a day and a night, with bullets flying and blood flowing like a river. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. The mastermind on the other side, known only by the code name Tiger, was never seen."
"In the final moments of the gunfight, I found a guy named Tiger who had unparalleled skills and marksmanship. The fight went from guns to close combat, and in the end, I managed to stab him in the chest with a knife. However, to my surprise, Tiger had another gun hidden on him. He shot me in the chest, and..."
At this point, Alaric paused for a bit before continuing, "I'll never forget the mocking and triumphant gaze he had. He even smiled at me and said, 'Do you think I'm Tiger? The real one is long gone, and you'll never catch him. However, he'll return one day to kill your entire family and avenge us.' Afterward, he laughed at me until he fell with a smile still on his face. Shortly after, I lost consciousness and slept for a very long time. When I woke up, I was already back at home. I immediately contacted the military about Tiger, but the commanding officer had already retired. They responded that Astral Innovations Group had been completely crushed, and those words Tiger said before his death were just his desperate struggle to scare me- nothing to be taken seriously."
"What happened later?" Galatea asked eagerly. "Did the real Tiger ever reappear?"
"No," Alaric replied.
"However, could it be that he intentionally scared you before his death? After all, those people were all psychopaths who wouldn't let others off even when facing their demise. It's not impossible," she speculated.
"That's indeed true, but..." he hesitated and said, "I feel like what he said was true; the real Tiger isn't dead."
"But it's been so many years. Do you think he'll return for revenge?" she inquired.
"Perhaps he will, perhaps he won't," he said with a smile as he looked at her. "I'm telling you all this because I want you to know that, whether it's my upbringing or the potential dangers, I'm resistant to marriage. In other words, the moment I don't resist, it means the person I truly want to marry has appeared."
'Am I the one you really want to marry?' Galatea thought in her mind.
When he was talking about his past grievances, she was already on edge. Suddenly, he changed the topic and caught her off guard. Was this his true confession?
Seeing her stunned look, Alaric chuckled and asked, "Even if you're slow, you should understand what I mean now, right?"
"Do... you really want to marry me?"
"What do you think?" he retorted before continuing, "Of course, you can refuse. After all, I did mention that the real Tiger might not be dead, and I don't know when he'll return to seek revenge on me. Once he does, my family will be in danger. So, it's up to you whether you want to take the risk of being part of it."
Hearing this, Galatea snorted coldly. She looked at him and replied, "Alaric, I find you quite optimistic. On the surface, you're a wealthy man that all women want to marry. But in reality, you're not only a sick person in constant danger of losing your life, but also a dangerous man whom enemies can target at any time. It's not a good deal to be your wife."
"The latter situation may not necessarily happen. And if only the former happens, if I die from my illness early on, then the Knight family's fortune will be yours. How is that a bad deal for you?"
"Alaric, could you please stop saying such gloomy things? What do you mean by dying early?" she scolded angrily. "What? You can't bear to see me die?"
"I've already said that I can cure your aftereffects, but you keep saying you'll die from them. Isn't that the greatest insult to my medical skills?" "Does that mean you're willing to continue being my private doctor?"
Galatea finally realized that he had tricked her, giving him a hard punch. "Alaric, you jerk. You tricked me!"
Alaric pretended to be in a lot of pain, so she nervously unbuttoned his collar. But in the process, he pulled her into his arms.
"I've been busy all along, and now I finally have the time to see you..." At that moment, Cormac opened the door and was about to walk in.
Hearing him coming in, Galatea hurriedly pushed Alaric away and stood up from his embrace.
It was already the second time this happened, and Cormac was really regretful about that. Why did he forget to knock on the door at such a critical moment? "Sorry, it seems like I came at the wrong time..." he said with a smirk.
Galatea's face was now tomato red as she said, "I'll go out and talk to the doctor; you take your time."
She made an excuse and quickly ran out. After she did, Alaric's face was immediately gloomy. He said, "Next time, call me before you come. Don't come if it'll disturb me!"
