Chapter 1586:

“Oh,” Brett’s emotions were subdued, his voice carrying a mix of feelings. The events of the previous night had been tumultuous, and he hadn't fully understood how Callie had crossed paths with Nicole. He sighed, surprised by the Wesson daughter's enduring kindness and bravery after all these years.
“Dad, can I ask you something?” Callie spoke cautiously.
"What's it about, Callie?"
“Nicole mentioned… She said you were the last person to see Mr. Lawrence. She also claimed that Wesson's death was not a suicide but a murder. Are these true?”
Callie clung to hope, refusing to believe that her father, who preached always kindness, could be involved in Wesson's death. As long as her father denied it, she would keep her faith in him. Maybe Nicole had been wrong or there was an misunderstanding going on.
On the other end of the line, Brett was silent for a long moment. With each passing moment of silence, Callie's heart grew colder. She felt a pang of anxiety and uttered, “Dad, please answer…”
After a long silence, Brett finally spoke. “Callie, this is not something you need to worry about. My only wish for you and your grandparents is that you remain safe and secure.”
“Dad!” Callie's tone suddenly sharpened. “I can't stand this uncertainty. Tell me, is it true or not?”
Callie's voice was shaking, feeling like she was on the verge of a revelation that would shatter her image of her father. All she wanted was to hear her father absolve himself of any involvement, affirm that it hadn't been him. She didn't want to hear anything else.
“Dad, assure me it’s not your fault, right? They made a mistake, right?” Callie insisted.
“I… Callie, it’s not as simple as you think, but I can’t say any more,” Brett replied, torn by inner conflict.
"So what is it? Please tell me, what's going on?"
Callie's emotions overwhelmed her, and tears streamed down her face. “Dad… You always told me to be honest, right? You've lived by that too, right? If it's just a misunderstanding, why don't you clear it up? Do we really have to live like this, hiding and living apart?”
Callie tried to persuade Brett, hoping he would come clean and tell the truth.
“Callie!” Brett’s voice grew louder as he announced, “I’ve already told you, this is none of your business. Take care of yourself and I'll get you overseas soon. Once there, we won’t need to hide anymore.”
“Going abroad? What about my grandparents? Will they be able to handle it?” Callie recalled the challenges they faced when they moved abroad during her childhood. The struggles her grandparents had gone through in adjusting to their new surroundings were still vivid in her mind.
"I'll take you abroad first, then to your grandparents. Don't worry. I'll make sure someone takes care of them. They won't suffer," Brett explained, trying to calm Callie down.
If Callie had held out any hope before, it was now shattered. She realized they weren't simply moving abroad. They were running away. And they weren't leaving by conventional means.
Callie's faith in her father was shattered, and she struggled to accept that her father, whom she had always admired, could be involved in something so serious. “Dad, why… Why do you have to do this? Nicole's parents have always been so nice to us. They're good people. Why…?”
Callie sobbed. She wished she hadn't found out the truth. Now, filled with regret, her heart ached. She was no different from her father. Nicole had saved her, but she had warned her father so she could escape. She was ungrateful, too.
