Chapter 1585:
? ? ? ? ?
With her father already dealing with the needs of the family, Callie couldn't bear to add more responsibilities to her own. However, doubts crept into Callie's mind as she pondered Nicole's words. Could his father really be capable of such actions?
Throughout her childhood, Brett had instilled in Callie the values of honesty and kindness. But why would she do something that was totally incompatible with her image?
Even as a child, Callie remembered that her father would frequently praise Wesson, who would often gift her father with numerous gifts to share with the family. In the event of hospitalization, Wesson provided significant financial assistance.
Brett also often expressed deep gratitude to Wesson for his kindness, a feeling she believed would last a lifetime. How could he, of all people, be Wesson's killer? Callie couldn't understand it. She really didn't believe it.
Callie clutched the phone, waiting for her father to call. Finally, in the middle of the night, her father called from an unknown number. Answering with a shy “hello,” Callie was met with Brett’s concerned question. “Callie, are you okay? Were you scared last night?”
Brett's tone was filled with guilt at learning that his daughter had nearly been put in danger, although the details remained sketchy. Upon receiving a text from Callie indicating that Nicole was looking for him, Brett quickly departed the designated meeting point without hesitation.
Brett went to the scene early in the morning to find out and discovered that a rapist had been arrested the night before. The rapist, who posed as a taxi driver, specialized in deceiving young women.
After committing the crime in an isolated location, he would capture private images of the girls and duplicate their entire contact list. He then threatened the girls that if they reported the crime, he would spread the recordings and private images to all their family, friends and classmates, as well as numerous social media sites.
The strategy was effective. The rapist committed several crimes within a month, but no one alerted the authorities. He refrained from monetary thefts while coercing victims into sexual acts and using captured videos to manipulate them afterwards. Many girls refrained from reporting the incidents, fearing widespread dissemination of their private images.
This time, law enforcement found incriminating photos and videos on the rapist's phone. Despite efforts to reach out to victims individually, many were reluctant to cooperate with authorities.
Only after repeated assurances of confidentiality from the police did some victims relent and agree to come forward. The rapist had a criminal record and was a pervert.
Brett harbored a deep sense of guilt, recognizing the mistake he had made in involving his daughter in the risky task of delivering the deposit slip. With police surveillance, his ability to earn money was compromised, so he had no choice but to use the deposit slip funds and venture into remote areas to make money.
The thought of his daughter being in danger weighed heavily on Brett, and his voice cracked several times. “Callie, I take full responsibility for what happened…”
Callie was aware that her father had misunderstood her and quickly reassured him by saying, “Dad, I’m fine. That guy didn't succeed last night. When he was threatening me, Nicole saved me.”
“What did you say? Was she the one who saved you?” Brett exclaimed, visibly surprised.
“Yes, Nicole was the one who saved me. She showed extraordinary courage and intelligence. “She used hot pepper water to quickly incapacitate the attacker.” Callie greatly admired Nicole when she talked about this subject.
Brett was silent, processing the revelation. Callie continued, “And Nicole even provided me with hot pepper water and other self-protection tools. Dad, you don't have to worry anymore. “I won’t be afraid to walk around at night.”
