Chapter 1587:
? ? ? ? ?
“Callie! Calm down!” Brett scolded loudly. His daughter was too compassionate. If she continued down this path, her conscience might overwhelm her, and he feared her reaction.
“I haven't hurt anyone. Don’t think about it anymore, okay?” Brett said seriously. “Remember that everything I did, I did it for you. “You have to trust me.”
“So why do we have to hide? If you were innocent, you could have cleared your name, right?” Callie questioned, unconvinced.
“This situation is too complex. “It’s not as simple as it seems,” Brett replied, sighing. “Yes, I was indeed the last person seen with Wesson. But I can swear that I didn't kill him. How could I? It is not in me to do such a thing…”
Brett's voice wavered. The memory hurts him deeply. Back then, he had been coerced into showing Wesson a video of Nicole being humiliated and had spoken devastating words to her, suggesting that Wesson take his own life to spare Nicole further misfortune.
Internally, Brett was tormented by his actions, to the point of wanting to beat himself up. His motive was not just money. His daughter had a rare blood type and he had struggled to find a compatible donor. Then, a mysterious figure offered him hope, promising him a transplant for his daughter overseas.
In the end, Brett couldn't go through with it. His conscience prevailed and he confessed everything to Wesson. He hoped that Wesson, being an experienced man, would be resilient and stand up to protect Nicole.
But upon returning to Wesson's office, Brett was horrified to discover that Wesson had indeed been murdered. He had been a coward, hiding for so many years, too scared to reveal the truth because of the cruelty of this mysterious figure.
Callie didn't know who to trust anymore. She tried to calm her voice and replied, "I understand."
“Callie, don't overthink things. Trust me. I would never hurt you. Get ready, and once this is all behind us, I'll take you abroad. “We’ll start a new, peaceful life, okay?” Brett said, trying to win his daughter's trust again.
Callie's mind was spinning and she weakly replied, "Okay."
After ending the call, Callie stared at her phone. She believed her father hadn't killed Wesson, but she knew her father was hiding something. If she told Nicole, she might be able to help…
However, before Callie could gather her thoughts, her bedroom door slammed open. Her grandmother, Laurie, burst into the room.
“Callie, give me your phone,” Laurie demanded.
Stunned, Callie quickly hid the phone behind her back. “Grandma, what are you doing? You won’t let me go out, and now you’re taking my phone away too?”
“I heard your conversation with your father,” Laurie said sternly. “Callie, I can't just stand by and watch you hurt your father. He's your father. Don’t be silly…”
Callie was started to learn that her grandmother had been eavesdropping. “Grandma, I know he's my father, but should I cover for him if he's done something wrong?”
“I'm not saying you should cover up for him if he's wrong, but remember that he's your father and he's doing it all for you. Why else would he make a mistake?” Laurie's voice, though hoarse, rang with conviction. She didn't fully understand the details of the situation, but she knew her son's nature. Brett was not a malicious person. If he had made a mistake, it had been for his son.
Laurie remembered the doctor's words that finding a match for Callie would be extremely difficult, perhaps impossible in her lifetime. However, not long after that conversation, Callie had flown overseas for surgery. It was clear that Brett must have come to some sort of arrangement.
In Laurie's opinion, her son was not a villain. He had simply done what he thought was necessary.
