Chapter 1519:

Panic gripped her and she turned back away, but before she could react, the door swung wide open.
Caught off guard, Nicole didn't manage to get back to her original position in time. When the door opened, she saw a tall, dark figure. She stopped, realizing it wasn't Emerie as she had thought. Looking closer, she recognized it as Roscoe.
Roscoe's eyes, unlike during the day, now had a sharp, intense focus. He spoke softly. "Nicole..."
Nicole was speechless, overwhelmed by shock. “You…haven’t lost your memory?” Why else would he recognize her?
Roscoe didn't explain it to her right away. Instead, he grabbed her wrist and said, "I'll explain it to you later. We have to get out of here now."
Without hesitation, Nicole let Roscoe lead her as they quickly slid down the tree.
To avoid making noise, they took off their shoes and walked forward in socks, walking carefully to avoid the crunch of leaves under their feet.
Suddenly, the sound of flapping wings filled the air.
“Duck down!” Roscoe whispered quickly.
Nicole instantly fell to the ground, lying down.
Above them flew a gigantic bird, flapping its wings violently as it emitted a heart-rending cry.
When he was out of sight, Roscoe whispered, “It's Alistair's bird. It patrols the valley at night. If it spots strangers, it swoops down, catches them, and drops them from a great height to kill them.”
Nicole felt a chill. She had seen the enormous shadow cast by the Alistair Bird. Looking closer, she realized that it was almost the size of a whale. Such a huge bird could easily snatch away one or two people without effort.
“How do you recognize strangers?” Nicole asked.
According to his observations, the animals in the area were very alert and responded to commands, which made him think that the witches had real magical powers.
Nicole, however, had her doubts about the simplicity of it all. The snake's fear of sulfur powder was a good example.
Roscoe spoke softly. “Alistair the Bird was trained by the witches and can pick up different scents. The witches add Soulwort to the bird's diet. Each witch carries a vial of Soulwort extract, which helps the bird identify who is friend and who is foe.”
Nicole found this explanation convincing. It confirmed her suspicion that the magic she was observing was nothing more than brilliant manipulation.
