Chapter 1518:
? ? ? ? ?
In a flash, Nicole ran back to her starting spot, narrowly avoiding the snake's reach. As she re-entered the marked area, the snake surprisingly stopped its attack.
In the dim glow, Nicole saw a thin layer of sulfur on the ground, a substance the snake seemed to fear. This realization reassured her. The supposed sorcery was nothing more than a facade designed to provoke fear and reverence.
With newfound confidence, Nicole understood the urgency of sealing the door before Emerie returned and discovered her small exit. The snake, now awake, would not succumb to sleep again anytime soon. Nicole deliberately deliberated before scooping up a handful of the sulfur powder, ready for action.
Time passed slowly as Nicole prepared herself. Finally, seizing her chance, she ran towards the door. The snake, seeing her move away from the marked area, hissed and lunged at her.
Nicole threw the sulfur powder and the snake fell to the ground, incapacitated. Nicole quickly closed the door and replaced the latch with a makeshift tool.
Returning to his assigned spot, he looked at the weakened snake, whose weak gaze now seemed more like a bluff, similar to his master's behavior. He was no longer afraid.
As he had anticipated, Emerie reappeared, and his sharp eyes immediately detected the snake's plight. The snake, pitiful and subdued, writhed weakly on Emerie's arm, emitting faint hissing sounds as if begging for help.
Emerie’s gaze turned icy as she faced Nicole. “What have you done to her?”
Nicole feigned innocence, her voice shaking in an act of fear. “I... I didn't do anything. He attacked me while I was stretching. I’ve been locked up for three days, barely able to move. I don't know why I acted like that…”
Her performance momentarily fooled Emerie, who assumed that the snake had encountered the sulfur powder. Administering a pill from her sleeve, Emerie calmed the snake, which obediently consumed it before settling down to rest.
Unlike the callous boss, Emerie cared for the creatures he had raised and treated them like his own relatives. I hated seeing them hurt. Approaching Nicole, Emerie offered her another pill, making sure she swallowed it by guiding her throat.
Nicole complied, feeling the effects of the pills increasing her vitality without the need for sustenance. With a lingering scent of pine, probably from Roscoe, Emerie left without further ado. Nicole took this as a sign from Roscoe.
Closing her eyes, Nicole prepared to rest, encouraged by the unexpected effectiveness of the pills, which gave her unusual vigor.
As night fell, Nicole cautiously examined her surroundings. The snake, still recovering, remained inactive. Sneaking up to the door on tiptoe, Nicole felt for the latch, only to discover that it was already left from the outside.
