Chapter 1517:
? ? ? ? ?
The red-robed witch stormed out of the room, unceremoniously disposing of the victim she was carrying, only to be confronted by a man dressed in white, whose face was an enigma in the shadows.
“How did you get here?” she asked, surprised by his sudden appearance.
The man did not respond, his face showed no emotion, it was a void in the darkness.
Inside, the old woman with a crown of snow-white hair, known as the boss, asked, “Emerie, who is lurking outside?”
Emerie took a look at the young man in front of her and replied calmly, “Boss, it’s nothing more than a bursting cocoon.”
"It's foolish to be frightened over a trifle," the chief grumbled irritably.
“My apologies. Boss, I'll take care of it,” Emerie assured, sending a silent order to the man, warning him to stay put.
He then picked up the victim he had abandoned and closed the door behind him. Looking at the man, he whispered, "Mr. Watts, let's go."
Obediently, Roscoe followed Emerie. When silence fell once more, Nicole brushed the leaves off her body and slowly stood up.
Nicole's face was still pale, having been nearly exposed. A timely intervention had saved her, a kick to the ankle sending her tumbling under a cascade of leaves just as Emerie was leaving.
Although Nicole hadn't glimpsed her rescuer, the name spoken confirmed it. It was Roscoe. Could it be that he retained some semblance of sanity, feigning amnesia?
Nicole couldn't understand everything, but she knew one thing for certain. Roscoe had rescued her. Maybe the parasite hadn't completely consumed Roscoe's mind and maybe it was feigning obedience. This thought sparked a glimmer of hope in Nicole. If they could come together, their chances of escape would be greater.
Returning to the tree she had climbed earlier, Nicole began the arduous climb upward. Remembering Roscoe's whispered instruction urging her to return, Nicole pondered its meaning. The mention of another Emerie pill alluded to her safety until the impending ceremony in three days.
As for the pill's effectiveness, Nicole guessed that she had already consumed two doses. A third seemed inconsequential. If these were indeed pills with effects equivalent to those elixirs, perhaps Austin would not have to endure his affliction. A remedy might be on the horizon.
However, despite her improving condition, Nicole was still wary of allowing Austin to swallow the pill without first discovering its contents and side effects. She decided to seek proper medical attention when she escaped to test the effects.
Rising with difficulty, Nicole approached the door. A sudden gust shook her legs and a scarlet snake buzzed past her ear. The guard snake woke up and attacked her to continue forward.
