Chapter 1418:

And without further ado, Jarrod turned on his heel and walked away, without a single glance over his shoulder.
Nicole's pillow bore the marks of her tears as she lay curled up under the covers.
Jarrod's words echoed in Nicole's mind like a haunting prophecy.
Someone with Vicki's malice was not unusual. It was a harbinger of what was in store for the others. Even if she had foreseen the need to synchronize the tests, it would have been useless against the privilege of those heirs.
They had the means to disappear abroad, dodging the storm of scandal until it abated.
Nicole had witnessed such plans unfold before, familiar with the bitter reality that lay ahead.
Disillusioned and tired, Nicole fell asleep, a feeling of resignation weighing on her heart.
Tired from the storm of emotions that had hit her the day before, Nicole's body was still heavy with exhaustion.
Today's emotional turmoil had exhausted her. When she woke up from her sleep, the tempting aroma of food filled the air.
An attentive maid had arrived, carrying a tray decorated with a variety of healthy and nutritious dishes.
Despite the maid's attentive ministrations, Nicole could not shake the uneasiness that lingered in her presence. "You can go," she said. "I'll be fine alone."
With a graceful bow, the maid accepted Nicole's polite farewell. As the maid set down the spoon with precision, she spoke in a tone of genuine concern.
"Miss, you must eat more. Mr. Schultz personally ordered these expensive, nutritious meals. His concern for your well-being is evident."
With that, the maid silently left the room.
A bittersweet smile played across Nicole's lips. While her physical well-being could be tended to with nutritious food, the question remained. What balm existed for a broken heart?
Despite her stomach's protests and the absence of hunger, Nicole forced herself to consume the food in front of her. She understood that preserving her health was paramount. Hunger strikes were for petulant children.
He knew that weak people could not think clearly or conceive effective plans.
Nicole nibbled delicately, savoring each bite just enough to stave off hunger, but far from enough to satisfy a voracious appetite.
As the maid cleared away the barely touched plates, Jarrod's eyes lingered on them. “She didn't feel like this today. Adjust the menu accordingly,” he ordered.
With a nod of recognition, the maid left, determined to pay more attention to Nicole's needs in the future.
Jarrod's effort to familiarize himself with Nicole's favorite foods spoke volumes about the importance he attached to them. Nicole was certainly special.
The next morning after breakfast, Nicole approached the maid with a charming smile. “Could you tell Mr. Schultz to come and see me?” she asked pleasantly.
Although Jarrod had given her three days to think things over, Nicole didn't feel the need to do so. Austin's security couldn't afford any delays.
Before long, Jarrod made his entrance, his arrival filling the room with a heavy, suffocating aura.
"I accept your conditions," Nicole murmured, her tone tinged with resignation.
Jarrod wasn't surprised by his decision. Sensitive people were easily influenced, and in Nicole's case, her loved ones were her Achilles' heel.
The mere thought of being separated from her mother or her child was something Nicole could not fathom. With them under her thumb, forcing her to obey was child's play.
Jarrod had refrained from taking advantage of it due to a regrettable shred of self-confidence. However, the result had exposed the folly of his confidence, as Nicole harbored no emotional attachment to him.
"But I have one condition," Nicole said.
Jarrod let out a chuckle. After all, she wouldn't be Nicole if she didn't stand up for herself.
“All right, go ahead,” Jarrod said.
Nicole's steely gaze met Jarrod's, and every word she said was full of meaning. "I need you to assure me that Roscoe will be safe for the rest of his life and that nothing bad will happen to him."
As his words hung in the air, a tangible tension filled the air.
Jarrod's countenance changed noticeably, darkening with intensity.
After a pause, Jarrod let out a scornful chuckle. “Nicole, how dare you try to negotiate with me?”
Jarrod could hardly comprehend his audacity in requesting his protection for Roscoe. Did he really think he wouldn't tear him apart in a frenzy of rage?
"Enough of this pretense. You know very well why I'm asking you." Nicole was tired of mulling things over with Jarrod.
With his mind sharpened by clarity, he recognized that safeguarding Austin and Roscoe at Ardlens would remain an insurmountable challenge without Jarrod's assistance.
Now that his attention seemed to be focused on her, she thought it was time to turn the tables in her favor. Her body was nothing more than a vessel, expendable compared to her loved ones.
“I’m counting on the fact that you have a crush on me,” Nicole said bluntly.
"If you help me with this, I'll let you do whatever you want with me. But if you say no, I'll keep pushing for custody of Austin."
"I've already taken care of Vicki, and I won't hesitate to take on anyone who stands in my way. I'll fight as hard as it takes."
