Chapter 1419:
? ? ? ? ?
Jarrod approached silently, each step purposeful.
Nicole met her cold, intimidating gaze, her heart racing. It was hard not to feel nervous. If Jarrod decided to attack her here, in her own home, she wouldn't stand a chance.
“Are you threatening me?” Jarrod’s voice, deep and authoritative, echoed through the room, heightening the tension.
Nicole clenched her hands and looked into her eyes.
«It's not a threat, but a proposition. I need your protection for Roscoe because he saved Austin's life. If it weren't for him, Austin and I would have died on that cliff years ago. "We owe him our lives."
Nicole understood Jarrod's weak points well. Provoking him now could put Roscoe at even greater risk. Her priority was to ensure Jarrod's safety.
Austin's safety, and then ensure Roscoe's protection. While this was an easy task for Jarrod, it posed an enormous challenge for her and Roscoe.
In the unpredictable environment of Ardlens, survival without solid support was almost impossible.
Plus, Nicole knew she had made a lot of enemies along the way.
Although he wasn't looking for trouble, he had to face it head on.
If it hadn't been for Jemma's advice the night before, Nicole might not have changed her perspective so quickly.
Jemma had advised him: “Relying only on yourself doesn’t make you noble. If it leads to misery, people will laugh at you. Wise people take advantage of any legal opportunity that benefits them. The right path is the one that helps you. Why worry about what irrelevant people think…”
Nicole knew Jemma meant to give her good advice. After so many setbacks, it was time to adopt a smarter strategy, to protect her loved ones in a different way. This approach would also make life easier for those she wanted to protect.
Nicole snapped back to reality and looked Jarrod in the eyes. “I need you to settle this debt for Austin's sake. “You owe it to Austin and me.”
Amidst all the hardships and pain of the past, Jarrod was at stake. Everyone owed Austin a lot.
“I don't owe Roscoe anything,” Jarrod replied, his words implying that he has acknowledged a debt to Nicole and Austin, but not to Roscoe.
Jarrod supposed that without Roscoe's intervention, perhaps he and Nicole would not have faced such trials. And Austin could have been born under his watchful eye, receiving the best medical care.
Nicole remained calm despite her rejection. “So, we can’t come to an agreement?”
It felt like a fierce tug-of-war, where any sign of weakness could mean defeat.
Nicole couldn't afford to turn back. Leaving Roscoe behind just to save Austin was unthinkable. Jarrod's refusal to acknowledge his debt to Roscoe was crucial to her. Without Roscoe's intervention, she and Austin might not have survived.
Roscoe was a decent, kind man who treated Austin like his own and showed Nicole immense respect.
Nicole just couldn't leave Roscoe behind. If she didn't stand her ground today, Jarrod would learn his limits, potentially putting Roscoe in danger.
Nicole was certain that Jarrod wouldn't hurt Austin. She was more concerned about the potential dangers associated with Jarrod's circle, not Jarrod himself.
Therefore, her stance was not to neglect Austin's safety, but to uphold her principles and not abandon those who had supported her. It was the same principle that Austin had taught.
Jarrod stared at Nicole for a long moment. Then he announced, “They'll bring you your clothes. Get dressed and come down.”
