Celeste’s POV

A pained scream echoed throughout the pack along with the familiar wail that I hadn’t heard in a few months. I sighed and pushed myself up but I was held down by Xavier’s arms. “Don’t go,” he g****s out. “He’ll be fine.” I roll my eyes at him.

“Let go of me Xavier or else,” I threaten. I gasp as I’m suddenly pinned to the bed, Xavier hovering above me with a smirk on his face.

“Or else what?” I go to respond but before I could his lips are on mine. I shove him off of me with all of my strength and even though it doesn’t compare to his he moves off of me. I walk to the door and smile when Xavier already has it open for me. It was a new door that Xavier had built to connect to the nursery that was also built while I was pregnant. I walk into the room to see the comforting yellow walls with purple animals painted throughout the room. I quickly run over to the crib and pick up my crying baby boy.

His tuff of dark brown hair is a mess as usual but his green eyes are closed as he cries in what seems like pain. “Hush now Maxillius, you’re okay.” I rock him back and forth in my arms as Xavier wraps his arms around my waist, leaning his head on my shoulder. I pull Maxillius up to me and k**s his forehead, not sure why he isn’t calming down. I’m used to him waking up crying but it’s different this time. I can tell.

“Celeste, let me see him.” I reluctantly turn around to hand him over to Xavier only to see something on his neck. I quickly pull him back to me, making Xavier confused, and push his onesie away from his neck gently. “What is that?” I look up to Xavier and quickly look back down to my little boy who is still wailing. I watch as a familiar black ink like substance swirls around, spelling out the word inamatus.

“Goddess no,” I whisper as I brush my hand over the mark. Xavier puts his arms around me again, trying to calm me down.

“What? Have you seen anything like it before?” A tear falls down my cheek and I brush my thumb over Maxillus’ cheek, desperately trying to calm him down knowing that the pain must be awful.

“Josh has one like it on the back of his neck,” I rush out in a whisper.

“What does is mean Celeste? Please tell me. He’s my son too.” I wait for Maxillius to calm down, him being my first concern at the moment. I could tell Xavier was getting impatient but my son is in pain and I’m not okay with that. Xavier sat down on one of the chairs we had in the room, pulling me into his lap as I was still trying to calm Maxillius. It took about two and a half hours but eventually he calmed down, his eyes closing in peace as he fell back asleep.

“Mateless,” I whisper.

“What?” I look back at him, my eyes teary.

“The mark on his neck, it means he is mateless.”
