When We Meet Again
Chapter 42

Anderson showed up a few minutes past noon with the file containing the divorce papers. He was to hand the file over to Charlotte. He met Alexia in the living room who suspected that the file contained the divorce papers. She wanted to be the one to bring the news to Charlotte so she could mock her. She offered to hand it over to her in Anderson's stead but he declined.

"I am sorry ma'am. I can't give it to you. My boss asked me to specifically hand it over to his wife." He answered.

"You mean his ex-wife," Alexia answered. "Do you not know who I am to him?"

Anderson was quiet. Of course, he knew who she was; his boss' girlfriend but he wasn't going to say that. He could tell that Alexia was waiting for him to say that word so she could lash out at him. His boss had warned him to not only try his best and avoid her but also try not to get into her bad book because if he did, he wasn't going to help him out.

Alexia who had waited for his response frowned when she got none. "You are not going to say a word?". Anderson only bowed his head but said nothing; he would rather get punished for not saying anything rather than get punished for saying words that got her pissed off. Alexia smirked. "You are indeed Melvin's bodyguard. You know when to talk and when to be quiet. I wanted to get you into trouble but you are smart enough to avoid it. Your reply doesn't matter to me. Now, let me have the file."

Anderson made no move. He wasn't going to give in to Alexia's demand.

"Does it matter who takes the file to her?" Alexia asked, folding her arms. "What matters is that she signs the papers and sends them to the lawyer. Don't you think?" Anderson shook his head. "You can speak to me now. Don't keep playing dumb. I won't get you into trouble I promise you this time."

Anderson sighed. "I really, wish I could give the file to you but I can't. I must hand the file over to her just like my boss wanted."

"You really, do not know who I am. Do you?"

"I do but..."

"I don't think you do. Or you would not have given such a reply."

"I am sorry, I..."

"Why do you insist on giving the file to her? Is there something written in there that I cannot know about? Or did you change the file content and you are afraid I will find out?"

Anderson shook his head quickly. "No, I did not. I am only following my boss' orders. I think..."

"It doesn't matter what you think. I am taking the file from you and that is final.". She took the file from him. "Just tell him you gave the file to her. He can't find out. She will be out of the house before he comes back."

Anderson did not make any attempt to take the file from her. He knew he could not get her pissed off any further though he did not want to go against his boss' command either. His boss had specifically told him not to give anyone the file aside from his wife. Anderson doesn't know what the file contains or why he had wanted him to give the file to his wife. Anderson was torn between offending Alexia and taking the file back or going against his boss' command. Alexia on the other hand was curious to know why Melvin wanted his guard to hand over the file to Charlotte and nobody else.

"What if he finds out that..."

Alexia smiled. "You do not have to worry about that. I will handle it. You can leave."

Anderson bowed before leaving. Alexia waited for him to leave. She quickly opened the file and was about to bring out the papers in it when Charlotte walked down the stairs.

"Isn't that supposed to be for me?" She asked. "What are you trying to do with it?"

Alexia was shocked. She had not expected her to come down at this time or even know that the file in her hand belonged to her.

Did Melvin call her already? Did he tell her he had already sent Anderson?

Those were Alexia's thoughts. She quickly adjusted the papers back into the file before turning to face Charlotte.

"And who told you the file in my hand belongs to you?"

"Isn't it obvious? Seeing how sneaky you are."

Alexia scoffed. "You must think the world revolves around you. Well, I am sorry I have to burst your bubbles because you see this file in my hand," she raised the file. "It does not belong to you. It's one of Melvin's files. He left it at home and I am going to give it to him. I don't know why I am explaining all this to you."

Charlotte scoffed. "And you think I believe that? I saw you when you tried to blackmail Anderson into giving it to you."

Alexia frowned. "What is that supposed to mean? Are you accusing me of..."

"Do you want to hand over the file to me so I can sign the papers and get myself out of this house? Or do you want to keep pretending you do not know what I am talking about so I can stay back and not sign them? Then you will remain as nothing but the second woman trying to destroy another woman's marriage. You know what the media's stake will be in this. Thank goodness you're a celebrity. You're at the losing end. I have nothing to lose."

Alexia knew that Charlotte was right. She is at the losing end; Charlotte has nothing to lose but she still will not give up without a fight; she isn't going to accept defeat just like that and lose her face.

She scoffed. "Do not think I am giving you this file because you threatened me. I just do not want to see your stinky face anymore."

"Neither do I want to. It's a good thing that we both do not want to see each other's faces. Why don't we end this as soon as possible and everyone will be happy?"

Alexia scoffed. "Like I care if you are happy or not." She mumbled. She handed the file to Charlotte. "Sign it now."

"Of course I will but not after I have read the content."

Alexia frowned. "You..."

Charlotte ignored her and headed back to her room. She sat down to read the content of the divorce papers before placing the file into her bag. She dragged the bag downstairs. She had gotten her bag ready a few hours ago after making sure she had nothing that belonged to Melvin with her. She had also sent in her resignation letter to the company. She wasn't going to keep working with him after the divorce.

Alexia who had been waiting impatiently for her to come down finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Did you sign the papers already?"

"It's none of your business!" Charlotte snapped at her.

She dragged her bag out of the house leaving Alexia in astonishment. Charlotte entered the taxi she had booked and headed straight to the lawyer's office.

**

Submitting the file to Melvin's lawyer was easy for Charlotte. Just like Melvin had said, he had called the lawyer before she arrived, making it easier to meet with him. Charlotte did not submit the papers immediately; she had some adjustments she wanted to make.

"I can make some adjustments right?" She asked.

"That would depend on what you want to adjust. I might need to call Mr. Melvin." "That will not be necessary. I won't be making any adjustments that will harm him." "So what do you want to adjust?"

"According to papers, I am supposed to get compensated."

The lawyer nodded. "Yes. Do you think the money and the house are too small?"

Charlotte smiled. "They are not. But I don't want them. I want them out of the divorce agreement."

"I can't do that. Mr. Melvin thinks you might come..."

"I won't come back to ask for anything from him. I do not mind signing an agreement on that but I will not take anything that belongs to him either. I hope you can do that for me."

"Are you sure that is what you want?" he asked and Charlotte nodded.

"Yes. But he can't know about it, please."

"I hope you both can talk it out. You are a very good person and I think both of you make a good couple."

Charlotte sighed. Even if she wanted to talk it out with Melvin; though she had no plan to do that; Alexia would not let that happen. Melvin doesn't want that either. Charlotte could also tell that the lawyer did not know why they were breaking up; he wasn't the one who helped them with the contract marriage.

"We've tried to talk about it. We tried to make it work too but it never did. I am sure this is the best option." Charlotte replied.

The lawyer nodded. "I guess it is. Mr. Melvin used the same words."

Charlotte sighed. "When will the new agreement be ready, please?"

"In a few minutes. You can just sit and wait while I get the papers ready."
