Fate of the Forsaken Brother Chapter 13

After we leave Kaden's room, we go to Devin's room. Devin didn't really take out anything other than his clothes from last night, so he just shoves them in the bag and he's ready. I grab my stuff from my room and we head down to our car to put everything in. We're not leaving yet, but I want to soon. Devin told me Kai has his own car and will be driving by himself. I told Devin he could ride with Kai, but Devin just laughed and said they'd never make it home if they were alone in a car together. I just shook my head and laughed. I wonder if Kaden's mate, Aubrey, will be coming home with us too? He hasn't said anything about it yet. Maybe they haven't even talked about it. Speaking of talking, I need to find Penny. Something has to be done about this rejection.

"Hey, would you mind if we went and found Penny?" I say as I close the trunk of our car.

"Yeah, sure. What are you going to say to her?" Devin asks.

"What can I say? She doesn't want to live with me, so I need her to accept the rejection." I say.

"Is that what you really want, though?" Devin asks.

"No, of course not. I wanted to be with my mate. I wish things were different. But I can't be with her if she doesn't want to live with me. Imagine if it was Kai asking you this. He didn't want to be marked and wanted to stay here, but he doesn't want to be rejected. How would you react?" I say to him.

"Yeah, I see your point. I wouldn't be able to be away from him. It would hurt too much. If he really didn't want to leave his pack, I guess I'd have to reject him too." Devin says. Suddenly, a loud growl comes from in front of us. Kai is standing by a black car, which I assume is his, staring at us. He definitely heard us talking.

"You will not be rejecting anyone, love. You're mine." Kai says, stalking over to us. Devin smirks as Kai pulls him into his body.

"Wouldn't dream of it, big man. It was a hypothetical scenario. Max is dealing with some s**t with his mate." Devin says. Kai looks over at me.

"You're rejecting your mate?" Kai asks, looking confused as to why I'd ever do that. I'm just as confused as him. I didn't want this.

"Unfortunately, yes. She doesn't want to be Luna and doesn't want to leave her pack to live with me. She wants to be unmarked and live at home while still being mates." I explain.

"That will never work." Kai says.

"Exactly my point. I told her I won't force her to move with me, but we can't be together if that's how she feels." I say.

"s**t, that's a tough situation. I'm sorry you're going through that, Alpha." Kai says, pulling Devin closer to him.

"Thank you. We were actually about to go find her so I could talk to her, but you guys don't have to come." I say. Devin looks at Kai, before turning back to me.

"I'm your gamma, right? I'm coming to support you with my hunk in tow." vin says, pointing at Kai. I just chuckle at Devin.

"Thanks, Dev. You're a good friend and gamma." I say and we head back to the packhouse.

We go back to the guest floor. Penny has to be here somewhere. I don't know what room she's in, but it has to be one of these rooms. I don't want to knock on every door, so I just do the only thing I can think of.

"Penny!!!" I yell out in my alpha voice. Devin jumps at the sound, not expecting me to yell. "Jeez, a little warning before you yell like that, man." Devin says. I look down the hall and see a few people open their doors. I look around and I finally see her. She looks surprised and embarrassed. I start walking over to her. She starts to go back in her room, but that's not happening.

"Don't even think about it, Penny. This ends now." I say. Penny rolls her eyes

"What do you want, Maxton?" She says.

"I want you to accept the rejection." I say plainly.

"Did you send my father after me this morning? Cause he's blaming me for all this drama now." Penny says to me.

"I didn't send him after you. I told him the truth about what happened last night. You made him think I didn't want you as a mate because you weren't good enough to be Luna. That's not at all what happened and you know it." I say.

"What happened then, cause I'm still confused as to why you don't want to be my mate." Penny says, crossing her arms. My eyes go wide. Is she serious right now? This can not be happening.

"Is this a joke? It has to be. Or did you just...forget what you said to me last night? You said you didn't even want to be Luna and you don't want to leave home. You want to stay in your pack and have zero responsibilities." I say to her. Penny glares at me.

"I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't say any of that." Penny says loudly, glancing around. I can't believe what she's saying right now. I'm getting a f*g headache. Just then, Devin mind-links me.

"She's talking loudly and looking around. She thinks her dad is around listening." Devin says. I look up and see Alpha Wade behind Penny. I don't think she knows he's there yet. I decide to test her.

"Your dad isn't here, Penny. I know you're lying because he's upset with you. Drop the act." I say. Penny goes still, before letting out a huff.

"Whatever. You still can't make me accept the rejection." Penny says.

"What is your end game here? If you aren't living with me, what exactly do you expect to get out of this? I'm doing this for you. You don't want to leave home, this is your solution. You're only going to end up getting hurt in the end and I'm trying to save you from that." I say.

"How exactly am I going to get hurt?" Penny asks, putting her hands on her hips.

"When I go home, I'll be looking for a new mate. A mate who respects me and wants the same things I do. When I take a new mate, it's going to hurt you, not me. I rejected you. My side of the bond is already broken. I won't feel anything if you decide to sleep with someone, but you will if I decide to." I say. Penny's eyes go wide. I guess she didn't think of that before.

"You wouldn't." She says.

"I would. You not accepting the rejection isn't going to stop me from living my life, Penny. You decided this by telling me you don't want to live with me and be my Luna. So I'm respecting that by saying we have no future together if that's how you feel. The bond will break on its own when I mark my new mate, anyway." I say.

"You're doing all this because I don't want to live with you?!" Penny yells. At least she admitted

it now.

"Partners don't live apart in two different packs. I don't know why you thought that would work." I say calmly.

"I gave you a solution and you said no!" Penny yells again.

"You told me to step down as alpha and become a warrior in your pack. That's not a solution,

that's abandoning my pack." I say.

"You have people that can take over for you!" Penny shouts at me.

"Penelope! That is enough!" Alpha Wade says to his daughter. Penny goes pale and turns to look at her father.

"Daddy, I didn't...k-know you were there." Penny stutters.

"I raised you better than this. I am ashamed of how you handled this situation. Your mother will be disgusted. I have heard quite enough of this. You've wasted enough of Alpha Maxton's time. Give him the answer he's looking for so we can all move on and go home." Alpha Wade says. Penny huffs and turns back to me.

"Fine. You win. I'll move in with you." Penny says. I furrow my brows, confused.

"Uh, no." I say. Penny looks at me.

"What do you mean no?" She asks.

"I mean no, that's not the answer I wanted. You're not moving in with me now. Not after this." I

say.

"You still don't want to be with me? After I just said I'd move with you?!" Penny says loudly.

"I did. But after you just yelled in my face, acted like a stubborn child who isn't getting what she wants, and tried gaslighting me into thinking you didn't say all that s**t last night, no I don't want to be with you. You've just shown me what life would be like if I were to be with you and I don't want to put myself through that. I wouldn't put my pack through that. And you don't even want to be at my pack, you'd just be miserable." I say to her. Penny just stares at me.

"This is ridiculous. I'm saying I'll go-" Penny starts but I cut her off.

"And I'm saying no. Accept the rejection so we can both move on." I say sternly. Penny glares at

me before she cries out.

"Daddy, you can't let him do this to me!" Penny whines to her father.

"Penelope, enough of this." Alpha Wade says.

"But Daddy!" Penny whines.

"Penelope! You're acting childish! Accept the rejection. Now!" Alpha Wade says in his alpha

command. Now she will have to do it. Penny lets out a frustrated growl and turns back to me.

"I, Penelope Hyland, accept the rejection." Penny says. I suddenly feel another sharp pain in my chest, but it's not as bad as before. It's more dull.

I clear my throat and turn to Alpha Wade. "Thank you, sir. I hope this doesn't affect your relationship with my pack." I say to him.

"Not at all. This is completely my daughter's fault. I hope we can both move past this." Alpha Wade holds out for me to shake. I do and nod.

"Yes, of course." I say before turning back to Devin and Kai. Devin tilts his head for us to go

somewhere else before talking. I'm just noticing how many people are watching us. s**t.

We start walking away and I hear Penny being scolded by her father. I feel bad, but I also feel... free? I don't know how to explain it. Our bond felt off from the beginning. I wonder if Kaden

felt like that with Jaclyn. I'll have to ask him.

Once we're away from everyone, Devin stops me.

"Are you okay, Max? That was...intense." Devin says.

"Yeah, it was a lot, but I'm okay. Our bond never felt right to begin with. I wanted to work things

out with her, but the more she talked, the less I wanted to be with her. Even last night. When

she touched me, it felt nice but also wrong somehow. I know that makes no sense." I say to

him.

"I don't really know what that's like, but Kaden might." Devin says.

"I can't believe Alpha Wade had to alpha command her to accept it. Why wouldn't she just do

it?" Kai mutters.

"I have no idea." I sigh.

"Alright, let's go find Kaden and get the hell out of here." Devin says. I nod. I'm so ready to

leave this damn pack.
