The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn -
Chapter 5
Yara Campbell nervously checked Sunny's body. "Are you injured? Are you bleeding? Where does it hurt?"
The dewy petals scattered all over the floor, and the thorns on the flowers pierced Suzy's neck, causing a slight sting. She stared at the nervous woman for a while. Jarold quickly came over and asked Suzy, "Did you get hurt?"
Yara suddenly turned around and stared at Suzy fiercely. "What were you doing?! Were you trying to kill Neenee?"
Suzy was rather stirred up when she saw the disgust and hatred in the woman's eyes.
Sunny glanced over at Suzy and hurriedly grabbed Yara's wrist, "You've misunderstood, Mom. I was asking Zeezee to cut my hair. She wasn't trying to hurt me."
"So that's what's going on!" Jarold tried to make merry and scoffed at Yara angrily. "You're always so quick to judge, losing your temper before understanding the situation. Look, even Zee's clothes are dirty because of you now." Knowing that she had wrongly accused Suzy, Yara's face was full of embarrassment. Even so, she tried to justify herself. "If anyone else saw Suzy holding a pair of scissors against Neenee's neck as soon as they entered the door, who would think that she was just giving her a haircut?!"
"Stop with your explanations!" Jarold gave Yara a look and said to Sunny, "Take your sister upstairs for a change of clothes. Hers are dirty now."
"Come with me, Zeezee!"
Sunny went over to hold her hand, and Suzy swept the petals off her shoulders with her fingers. She escaped unobtrusively.
Entering the bedroom on the second floor, Sunny said apologetically, "I'm so sorry, Zeezee. I didn't expect Mom to come so quickly. You got hurt because of me."
"It's not your fault." Suzy had a faint smile on her face.
Sunny went to the closet to get a white T-shirt and put it on the sofa. "This one's new, Zeezee. I haven't worn it yet. Change your clothes here and I'll wait for you downstairs."
"Okay."
Sunny closed the door behind her. Meanwhile, Suzy looked at the shirt on the sofa and her expression turned grim. One wanted to get her hair cut, while the other one came back right on time. What a coincidence!
After changing her clothes and coming out, Suzy walked along the corridor. One of the doors in the middle was not closed tightly. She could hear Jarold's voice coming out of it. "How could you hit Zee with those flowers?! You're too much!" Suzy slowed her footsteps down.
Yara was still unwilling to let it go. "How should I know she was just giving Neenee a haircut? She held the scissors across Neenee's neck, so I was petrified!"
Jarold sighed. "Don't you think there's something wrong with your attitude toward Zee? Don't forget that Zee is our biological daughter!"
Yara justified herself, saying, "I know that. I wanted to make it up to her when she came home three years ago but she insisted on moving out. How can I make up for it?"
"Did you urge her to stay when she was moving out?" Jarold continued, "I know you love Neenee, but Zee was mistakenly taken away at birth and suffered so much out there. Can't you be nicer to her?"
Yara's voice sounded helpless. "I'd like to be nicer to Suzy as well, but in the past 20 years, I've loved Neenee as my own daughter. How can I simply change my target of affection? Besides, Neenee is such a great kid. Her skills in piano, painting, and violin are all top-notch. Moreover, she's so sensible and smart. When I look at Suzy, she doesn't have one good quality. I can't even favor her if I want to!"
"How can you say that about your own daughter?"
"It's not like I'm saying it in front of her, right?" Yara complained, "You're at fault as well. Why ask her to come today? It's made my birthday an unpleasant one!"
Suzy's eyes became gloomy, and she no longer wanted to listen further. She opened her bag, put the light gray jewelry box on the flower stand outside the door, and walked downstairs.
Downstairs, Sunny was holding onto a Ragdoll. Seeing Suzy coming down, she immediately asked with a smile, "Does the shirt fit you well, Zeezee?"
"It does, thank you!" said Suzy politely.
"We're sisters, so there's no need to be so polite." Sunny smiled at her innocently.
Suzy said with a small smile, "I just received a call from my department asking me to go over. I have to go now, so will you convey the message to Dad on my behalf?"
"So soon? You haven't eaten the cake yet!" Sunny showed a regretful expression.
"Help me say sorry to Mom for disrupting her birthday," said Suzy as she walked to the door.
However, it seemed like it had started to rain outside. The ground was all wet.
Sunny turned her head and shouted, "Zanda, where's Uncle Charm? Tell him to give Zeezee a ride."
Zanda ran over, glanced at the rain outside, and gave it a thought before sighing. "Oh no! Uncle Charm drove out earlier to pick up Madam's cake. He hasn't come back yet."
"I can go by myself. Would you mind giving me an umbrella, Ms. Zanda?" Suzy said.
"Oh, okay!" Zanda turned around and quickly took an umbrella and handed it to Suzy. She did not forget to add, "This umbrella is a few hundred dollars. Please use it carefully, Ms. Suzy."
A sneer flashed across Suzy's eyes, but her face remained calm. She opened the umbrella and stepped out into the drizzle.
As soon as Suzy walked out of the gate, Sunny saw Uncle Charm walking over with an umbrella in the yard.
Zanda showed an awkward expression and said embarrassedly, "This darn memory of mine. Ol' Charm came back half an hour ago. It's truly neglectful of me to let Ms. Suzy walk out like that on this rainy day." Sunny hugged the cat, smiling softly and innocently. "Perhaps you've been working too hard recently, Zanda. I'll talk to my mother about giving you a raise when I have the chance."
Zanda was immediately beaming with joy as she quickly fawned over Sunny, "Thank you, Ms. Sunny. I'll surely listen to you more in the future."
Sunny turned to walk upstairs and saw the jewelry box on the flower stand at first glance. She took it, but before she could open it, Jarold and Yara came out of the room. Hearing that Suzy had left, Yara felt relieved.
Jarod did not feel like bickering with Yara on her birthday, so he changed the subject. He looked at the jewelry box in Sunny's hand and asked with a smile, "Is that for your mother?"
Yara took it with a smile. After opening it, she was stunned for a moment and had a pleasantly surprised expression on her face. "The latest collection released by GK is still in its promotional period. It's said that there's only one set for each style, and they're not easy to get. Did you buy this for me as a birthday gift, Neenee?"
A look of surprise flashed in Sunny's eyes. She merely smiled but did not deny it. "I'm just happy that you like it!"
"My Neenee is the best!" Yara hugged Sunny, feeling moved by her gesture. The guilt from hitting Suzy before disappeared instantly.
On the other hand, Suzy had left the Shirley family's residence and was walking back along the road. This was a villa area, so there were no buses. Even taxis were scarce.
The sound of the rain hitting the umbrella was cold and chaotic.
Suzy stepped on the rain, walking unhurriedly. The spring rain and chill in the air were like her mood at the moment.
One after another, cars simply hurriedly passed by on the road. In one of the Bentleys that passed by, the woman sitting in the passenger car suddenly looked out the window. Then, she said to the man in the backseat, "Uncle, I think that's my classmate. There's no bus around here. Let's give her a ride."
George looked at the document in his hand. His handsome face was cold as he nodded slightly.
Enoah Laine asked the driver to reverse the car. Then, she lowered the window and shouted at Suzy. "Get in the car, Suzy!"
Suzy was taken aback. "Enoah?"
The two were from the same department but were not that familiar with each other.
Enoah smiled charmingly and said, "Get in. We'll talk after you get in the car."
"Thank you!" Suzy said gratefully. She opened the car door, put away the umbrella, and sat inside. From the corners of her eyes, she noticed that someone was sitting next to her. When Suzy glanced over, she was immediately baffled.
