The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn -
Chapter 199
Chapter 199
Initially, Suzy was happily sipping her tea. Mr. Welson knew that she liked sweets, so he had put sugar in her black tea. It tasted incredible.
Hearing Josiah's words, she almost spat out her tea. However, not daring to raise her head, she merely turned her head and coughed.
George was stunned, and the look in his eyes quickly turned darker. "What do you mean, Mr. River?"
Josiah continued to fan himself and said in a low voice, "Don't misunderstand my intentions. It's just that I have a pot of Epiphyllum that'll bloom tonight, and I need someone to help me collect the pollen as the Epiphyllum is blooming. It needs to be collected every quarter of an hour, so I need someone to stand and watch for the night. I'm thinking of asking this young lady to help me. So, if you're alright with that, Mr. Laine, you may come to pick her up early tomorrow morning. You may take the bracelet with you then. I won't even ask for a penny." George's eyes turned cold. "I'm afraid I can't agree to this request, Mr. River. You may give me a price for the bracelet instead."
Josiah shook his head with a sullen face. "It's not up for discussion. Either you let this young lady stay and have her watch the flower for the night for me, or you can leave this instant!"
George's face was extremely cold. He held Suzy's hand and stood up. "We must've disturbed you, Mr. River. I'll be taking my leave now."
Afterward, he turned to leave with Suzy.
Suzy proceeded to turn around and glared at Josiah. What on earth was the old man thinking?
She had clearly sent him a text message beforehand, asking him to pretend not to know her and not to make things hard for George. She asked him to sell that bracelet at any price.
Mr. River rolled his eyes at Suzy and snorted before turning his head arrogantly.
Suzy was led out the door by George, and as they walked across the veranda, Jessie immediately walked over. "Did Mr. River agree to sell the bracelet?" George's expression remained the same as usual as he said, "No. Let's head back!" Suzy grabbed George and asked, "We're leaving just like this? Hilde loves his wife very much. He's sent people over to this country several times now to look for the bracelet. If we can bring it back, Hilde may just sign the agreement from being overjoyed." George said lightly, "Even if we don't get the bracelet, I can still get him to sign the agreement."
"But we don't know how long that'll take, and are you certain nothing will change? There's Bennett too. He certainly won't give up on the bracelet." Suzy gently persuaded him.
George's eyes sank. "I won't let you stay."
Even if he believed in the River family's character and was reassured that they would not hurt Suzy, he would not leave Suzy alone in a strange place. Let alone exchange her for an object.
Suzy raised her eyebrows, and there was slyness in her eyes. "He said that he wanted me to
stay, but he didn't say that you had to go."
George's deep eyes showed a trace of surprise.
Suzy pursed her lips and smiled. She led George back to the front hall and said with a smile, "I can stay, Mr. River, but Mr. Laine will also be staying with me."
Josiah seemed to have expected that they would return, so there was not a hint of surprise on his face when they came back in. He simply shook his head after hearing Suzy's words and said, "No. Only you're allowed to stay the night." Suzy frowned lightly. "Are you certain? If it's not up for discussion, then we'll truly get going now. If we leave, no one will help you collect the Epiphyllum pollen." Josiah pouted and snorted at her, but he did not speak. "Forget it. Let's go!" Suzy sighed and led George out the door again.
As soon as they arrived at the door, they heard Josiah suddenly calling out from behind, "Wait. Come back!"
