The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn -
Chapter 198
The old man walked along the veranda with the three of them, and Jessie was inwardly shocked. The yard might look plain and simple, but it was in fact, overflowing with riches and honor, For example, the wooden porch was made of red sandalwood, which was more valuable than gold For an ordinary household, a red sandalwood table would be a family heirloom for several generations. However, for the Rivers, the entire veranda was built with red sandalwood-the majestic pillars, the wooden railings carved with lotus flowers, and every nook and cranny.
They were not deliberately showing off, but it was purely the wealth carved into the bones of the River household.
Outside the front hall, the old man asked George and the others to wait for a while. He went to the house by himself to report the situation to Josiah. He came out quickly and said with a smile, "Mr. River has invited you into the hall!" "Thank you!" George nodded and led Suzy into the front hall. The hall was also decorated in an antique style with wooden windows on three sides. There was no heavy or gloomy feeling upon entering, but the space appeared taller and brighter with the bright and clean windows. net
There was also a side door in the house, and outside the side door was a pond where Josiah was currently fishing at. At this moment, he placed his fishing rod down and came in. His eyes first fell on Suzy before he looked at George. He asked in a heavy voice, "Mr. Laine?" George was gentle and polite as he said, "We've taken the liberty to come to your door. This is a little something for the intrusion, Mr. River."
Jessie placed the boxes of tea leaves on the table and backed away silently.
Josiah was also dressed in gray clothing. He looked thin and awe-inspiring. He chuckled twice before turning to look at Suzy and asking, "And this is?"
George replied in a low voice, "A friend of mine. She's here today to accompany me to visit you, Mr. River."
"A friend?" Josiah looked at Suzy, smiled meaningfully, and pointed at the chair with a shrewd pair of eyes. He said, "Sit down, then, the two of you."
George took Suzy to the seats, and a servant came in to serve tea. George was given a cup of green tea, while Suzy was given a cup of black tea. "What's the purpose of your visit today?" Josiah asked in a low voice after drinking a sip of tea.
George did not beat about the bush and immediately said, "A friend of mine lost a bracelet many years ago and we heard news that it's a part of your collection now, Mr. River, so we personally came to your doors today. If you're willing to part with it, we're willing to pay a lot of money to buy the bracelet from you."
Josiah sneered. "That old bracelet again? Someone came by earlier asking for that thing as
well. That friend that you mentioned couldn't be the same person, could it?"
George said, "It should be the same person."
Josiah said, "Then why are you working so hard to help your 'friend' find this bracelet? This is something a woman would wear. Is this friend of yours a woman?" George replied, "Yes, she's a lady. The bracelet was inherited from her grandmother's family, but she has passed away. Our friend wants to locate the bracelet to fulfill her late grandmother's last wish."
Josiah smiled wryly and cast a glance at Suzy, who was drinking tea silently. He asked, "So, you came here to plead with me to buy a bracelet with a lot of money for a woman, hmm? Won't this young lady next to you mind?" George frowned slightly and his voice turned lower, "Those are two unrelated matters." Suzy coughed lightly and turned to look at Josiah. "You've misunderstood, Mr. River. The owner of this bracelet has married into a family from Glooney Nation. This time around, she came back with her husband to talk business. While she was in her hometown, she tried to look for the old bracelet as well."
"Oh. So that's the case? If you had explained it more clearly, I would've understood!" Josiah waved around the fan in his hand and said indifferently, "I've placed that old bracelet in the backyard and it's been collecting dust for some time. It's not impossible for me to give it to you!" George said, "Then I would like to thank you for being willing to part with it, Mr. River. Tell us the price you'd like for it and I won't even try negotiating." Josiah chuckled lightly. "I know that you Laines have a lot of money, but do you think I'm short of money? I can give the bracelet to you, but I do have a condition." George asked somewhat warmly, "If you have any request, please mention it!" Josiah raised his hand and pointed at Suzy with his fan. There was a slight twinkle in his eyes as he said, "Leave her here and I'll let you take the bracelet."
