DAMON POV

Staring at the clock, watching the hands tick by slowly, at a snail’s pace. That’s all I have done for the last two hours, my fingers tapping rapidly against the armrest, my mind spinning with what Andrew and Matt have told me about my parent’s shadiness. I am tired of their nonsense answers. Regardless of what they say, I am getting them to tell me everything once and for all.

Andrew and Matt are still sitting on the couch next to me, silently waiting for my natural impatience to get the better of me. They’re surprised I’ve been listening to the doctor’s advice this long. I can see the glaze in their eyes as they mind link with one another, a snarky smile taking over Matt’s face. The little bastard is probably making some smart-a*s remark because he can’t help himself. Based on Andrew’s amused expression, I would say I am right.

‘Damon…’ comes Slade’s croak, making the first sound in days, relief flooding over me. I had missed my annoying companions, ‘what the hell happened?’

‘Wolfsbane and silver tranquilizer,’ I muttered, his panic overtaking every ounce of me, filling me from my fingers to my toes. I am already preparing for the rage that will come when he finds out Elle is missing.

‘Where is Elle?’ Slade asks immediately, as I knew he would, his presence growing in my mind as his anxiety turns into angst,

‘Where the f**k is she, Damon?’

‘Gone,’ I return, as he surges forward a ball of fury demanding control. ‘What the f**k do you mean ‘gone’?’

‘We got shot with a tranquilizer around midnight,’ I tell him, ‘we didn’t wake up the first time until dawn. It’s been five days since.’

‘Five days?’ He roars, my eyes shifting to black as he jumps into the driver seat, wincing slightly as the IVs are ripped from my arm once again.

“fk,” Matt mutters as Andrew holds up his hands cautiously, seeing that Slade is back and fully in control. “Alpha,” Andrew tries coaxing in a soft, gentle voice but now that Slade is in control. I have no intention of taking back over, not until I have some f***g answers.

“Don’t Alpha me,” Slade’s animalistic voice, “your Luna is f*g missing, and you’re just sitting there!” I growl, stepping closer, but it’s really like I am watching from the passenger seat while Slade makes all the decisions.

“I am sorry, Alpha,” Andrew explains, palms upwards, “but your father he…” he stumbles over the words scratching the back of his neck and an uncomfortable look passing over his face. Slade doesn’t need to know more, a roar escaping that shakes the entire room.

Without wasting another second on these two, Slade carries us from the room at lightning speed, ignoring every plea from the nurses and the fearful looks from other pack members. Running straight out the door barrelling past incomers without care. Once out of the parking lot, I can feel my bones breaking and reshifting into new positions until four paws push into the wet earth as we run directly toward the packhouse.

The rain still falls from the sky, coating my fur, but I don’t care. Andrew and Matt follow behind in their wolf forms but stay at a respectable difference. Slade is weaving through the trees at a speed we had never gone before. Each muscle felt stronger as if we hadn’t almost died from wolfsbane and silver.

‘Do you feel different?’ I ask Slade as we pass through a clearing that we shouldn’t be at already. We had never gotten here this fast before in the past. Being an Alpha, I know how long it takes me to get from one point to another within the territory.

‘I don’t feel like I almost died to save your a*s if that’s what you mean,” Slade grumbles, clearly annoyed by my questioning, ‘but yes, something feels different. I have always been strong, but this is unique, and I can’t figure out what it is exactly.’

‘Hmmm…well, whoever took Elle wouldn’t give us drugs to make us stronger,’ I counter, trying to add the puzzle pieces that never seem to fit no matter what I try to do, but when I get only half the information from everyone, it makes it hard to figure s**t out.

‘What haven’t you told me, Slade?’ I question, ‘Everyone being dishonest with Elle and I hasn’t worked out for anyone, so you better tell me, or else I will never trust you enough for our relationship to work. You know what will happen to us then.’ I warn. This a subtle reminder of what happens when a wolf and human cannot work in a cohesive unit which isn’t pleasant for either party.

In a rush of words, rambling so fast it sounds like he is talking over himself, “rightafteryourthirteenthbirthdayElles……” that is the most I can decipher from his incoherent rambling. As he tries to find his words, we eventually slow to a gentle walk so that Slade can find the right place to start.

‘Slow down and speak clearly,’ I interrupted, unable to make heads or tails of what he is saying or had said.

‘I knew about the spell,’ Slade says, all in a rush like he did before, but the words ring clear as day through my head, a fiery maelstrom brewing within me, threatening to take over.

A twig snaps behind me, and Andrew’s scent tells me he has joined the party, which means Matt isn’t far behind. Ten seconds later, Matt’s scent enters the clearing. Both wolves are at my back but staying a safe distance away.

‘What do you mean you knew?!’ I ask, my voice a low growl, forcing us toward the packhouse again, ‘how long have you known about it?’ I demand. Every syllable is so harsh it sounds like repeated slaps.

“Before it was officially placed,” he grumbles, his shame leaking into my soul as he continues his explanation, “It was two weeks before your thirteenth birthday. Elle’s parents came by in the dead of night without warning, a blonde witch in tow. They wanted to put a spell on Elle, and they needed us to do it.”

‘Why?’ I ask, ‘Why did they need us? Why did you agree to it? How did you agree to it? How many times have you taken control of my body before I shifted?’

‘Because she couldn’t handle it alone,’ Slade explains, ‘it would have killed her. You were sleeping, and I could scent her so close by, driving me insane, so I took control. That’s when I overheard them arguing about the best place for Elle. Here she would have someone to balance the spell out. The other options they were positing would have somehow gotten her abducted and forcefully marked or killed. There was no way I could let that happen, so I made a decision.’

‘What else do you know?’ I badger him again for more answers, not relenting until he tells me everything.

‘Nothing,’ he says hastily, ‘I don’t know what else was done or involved in the general planning. I just made the necessary sacrifices to keep Elle safe. If it meant keeping her safer, I’d make the same decision a million times.’

‘I know that’s not all of it,’ I say during a longer than necessary pause.

‘All I know is when the spell was put into place,’ continuing onward with his explanations, ‘everything you two knew and remembered about each other was gone, and I was not allowed to meddle or tell you anything until you marked Elle.’

‘I haven’t marked Elle yet,’ I remind him, a subtle reminder that she isn’t marked and is still telling me all this information which means something has changed with the spell itself. ‘What breaks the spell, do you know?”

“I thought only our mark had the power to do that,’ Slade answers quickly and without hesitation, ‘if anything else could break it, I don’t know what it is. I was never involved in the plans. Your parents are the only people who know the actual details. It’s all in the manilla folder Elle’s parents gave to your mother.’

‘So you don’t know which pack Elle is from or who wanted her dead?’ I ask one last time, trying to trip him up and see if he is lying to me.

‘No,’ he says, ‘my only responsibility in this whole shitshow is making the final decision on the spell itself, keeping it from you, and trying to get you to mark Elle.’

‘I guess we have a manilla folder to get,’ I tell Slade as he pushes his strength forward, launching us back into the forest as we make the rest of the journey home.

Five minutes later, my four large paws are prancing up the front steps before my nose nudges the door wide open, entering the house without care for the strange looks I get from other members milling about as I shift in the foyer. Andrew and Matt’s naked forms walk up the porch steps on their way into the home.

Without having to ask for three pairs of shorts and shirts, they are thrown at us and taken from one of the clothes boxes lingering around the house. The nice thing about living in a werewolf community is that random clothes are hidden everywhere imaginable.

Putting on the shorts and shirt quickly, I storm down the hallway towards my fathers’ office; the anger rolling off of me has pack members backing away from me like I am a mountain lion waiting to pounce. I know Andrew and Matt are following behind me, their footfalls landing on the wooden floor as we journey to see my father.

Without knocking, I push the office door open more forcefully, letting it smack roughly on the wall behind it, startling the occupants hiding in this room. Upon seeing me, my mother’s hands fly to her chest as she walks toward me, arms outstretched like she wants to hug me.

“Oh, Damon,” she starts but a hand up and a warning look stops her dead in her tracks. “Cut the crap,” I snarl, my eyes resuming on my father standing strong, tall, and proud before me. “I want the manilla folder.” I know Andrew and Matt have joined the party as they move to stand next to their parents, their eyes flinging between my dad and me like they’re watching a tennis match.

“I don’t know-” my father tries to argue, but I can see the lie on his face as his skin turns of shade of puce.

“Bullshit!” I argue, “you know exactly what manilla folder I am talking about! The one given to you by Elle’s parents describes the detailed plan for this spell and Elle’s life. I want it now!” I demand, glaring at my father while he glares back our energy, slowly filling every inch of space as we fight for control.

“I am sorry, Son,” my father says with an apologetic look as he sets his pen down, walking around the desk towards me, “but it’s for Alpha eyes only.”

“Then maybe it’s time for a new Alpha,” I growl, my black eyes piercing into his while the others in the room gasps at the implication of my statement, but I don’t care. I am tired of their f*g games and I need answers.
