The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 53
Evelyn had just hailed a cab when she received a call from Charles' aunt, Carmen.
"There's a family dinner at the Jenkins' tonight. Come over and help."
Then, she hung up.
It was a command. To Carmen, Evelyn was nothing more than a servant of the Jenkins family.
Rosa had declared Evelyn a daughter of the Jenkis family after her stepmother passed away, but without Rosa's presence, no one in the Jenkins family acknowledged it.
After Rosa had gone abroad for treatment, Evelyn had lived with Charles for five years, and they shared a daughter, but Charles refused to acknowledge their relationship. The rest of the Jenkins family didn't acknowledge the relationship and their daughter, Charlie. Evelyn was just a servant to be called and dismissed at will.
She had just heard Dahlia's voice on the phone. A cold smile played on Evelyn's lips.
Moments later, she got into a cab and told the driver, "To the Jenkins estate."
An hour later, the cab stopped outside the private drive of the Jenkins estate.
To avoid outside disturbances, the Jenkins had bought all the surrounding land, preventing taxis from entering.
Evelyn got out and walked for half an hour before reaching the Jenkins estate.
Upon entering, she saw Dahlia and her daughter being lavished with attention from Carmen and her daughter Sena, who were sitting on either side of them. Charles was sitting across from them, his gaze tenderly on Dahlia and her daughter.
As soon as Evelyn appeared, Dahlia and her companions saw her. With a gentle smile, Dahlia spoke, "You are really too good to Sandy. This could spoil her." After Dahlia finished, she cast a meaningful glance at Evelyn.
"Sandy is Charles' daughter; there's no such thing as spoiling her too much," Carmen spoke indulgently.
"Exactly, Sandy is my darling niece. If not her, then who should we spoil?" Sena hugged Sandy, affectionately kissing her on the cheek.
A cold light flashed in Evelyn's eyes. They were doing this on purpose.
Charlie was also Charles' daughter, but she was mistreated and hurt every time she came to the Jenkins estate. At such a young age, Charlie had learned to tread carefully.
Evelyn suppressed her pain and stepped forward.
Dahlia, pretending to see Evelyn only now, greeted her warmly like a hostess, "Evelyn, you're here. Why did you come alone? Where's Charlie?"
Dahlia was smiling, but Evelyn knew that smile was full of poison.
Dahlia was deliberately provoking her. She knew that mentioning Charlie would make Evelyn lose control.
Charles also turned his head, casting his warning gaze on her. He was telling her not to make a scene here.
"Dahlia, the Jenkins household is not just any..." Sena, frowning, cut in before Evelyn could speak.
She meant to say that not just anyone could come here, but she stopped midway, feeling a cold gaze on her from Charles.
Sena immediately remembered the
slap she received from him in the hospital after she had called Charlie a little bitch. It had been a long time, but that look made her face feel pain again. en FindNovel
Sena immediately shut her mouth.
Evelyn avoided the topic of Charlie. She calmly walked over, and under Dahlia's scrutinizing gaze, sat down close to Charles. Then, lifting her head, she gave Dahlia a slight smirk.
Dahlia's eyes darkened, and she gritted her teeth in secret.
Evelyn had been insisting that she had broken up with Charles, hadn't she? What was she doing?
Charles, too, was clearly taken aback, giving Evelyn a sidelong glance.
Evelyn didn't look at him, her
attention still on Dahlia. In front of Dahlia, Evelyn brazenly hooked her little finger around Charles' hand, her fingers teasingly playing in his palm.
