Return Of The Prodigy
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 23

Mrs. Kent's smile stiffened. She then said awkwardly, "Oh, my memory is failing me lately; I totally forgot. Don't worry, I'll do as you say from now on. Oh, right... What's the name of the company you work at, and how much is your annual salary?" The man said proudly, "I work for the Byron Group, and I'm a project manager there. The annual salary isn't much, though. If we exclude the 'extra' income, it's around 200 thousand dollars."

"It's still a lot! There are tons of people who won't earn this much in their whole lives. After all, it's unlikely that a company would want to hire someone with a mental disorder," said Mrs. Kent.

"Ma, we're doing so much better than some. You shouldn't brag. You'll just hurt their pride," said the man haughtily.

"Of course, of course. I know that it's pointless to compare our family to theirs. Let's go, okay? I want to see how spacious your new car is!"

Trey and Gemma were so embarrassed that they wished they could immediately find a hole to crawl into, their hate for Adam grew stronger then before.

Mrs. Kent's son-in-law drove a brand-new car, brought her to eat outside quite often, and had an annual salary of 200 thousand dollars even without counting the "extra" income... When they compared him to their own son-in-law, they felt exasperated.

Divorcing and getting rid of him was the top priority!

The duo watched with envy as Mrs. Kent got into the BMW.

Vrooooom...

The engine let out a rumbling sound as the car started. Then, Mrs. Kent's son-in-law lowered the window and said impatiently, "Hey, move back a little. Don't stand too close to my car."

"Yeah, you should keep some distance. If you were to damage it, you wouldn't be able to compensate us for the damage!"

Trey and Gemma awkwardly stepped back.

The man was satisfied and made a quick U-turn, heading for the street entrance. However, another BMW happened to be coming in.

It was brand-new and shiny. A BMW 7 Series.

Mrs. Kent's son-in-law furrowed his brow and shouted, "Hey, why did you park your car there? You're blocking the whole road."

The car door opened, and a man got out. He did not pay attention to the people around him, walking directly toward Adam. "Mr. Drake, this is the car you ordered. I'm sorry that it took me so long to deliver it." Adam nodded calmly. He took the car key and gave it to Trey.

"Going to work without a car must be troublesome, so I decided to get you one. I was in a hurry when I returned this time and didn't manage to prepare a proper gift, so I eventually settled on a car. This model isn't too expensive, and if you don't like it, I can ask for a different one."

Trey looked at the car key in shock, stammering, "T-This car... is for us?

Gemma was also shocked. She rubbed her eyes to make sure everything was real.

How is this possible?

That's a BMW 7 Series, and it costs more than a hundred thousand dollars! How was Adam able to afford it? Moreover, he decided to give it to us?

"Yes. During the past few years, I failed to be by your side. Although this car can't make up for what I owe you, I hope you'll accept it," said Adam sincerely.

"Are you... Are you serious?" asked Gemma in disbelief. She felt as if she were in a dream.

The madman they looked down upon, who was considered a worthless wretch by all of their relatives, had just gifted them a car worth over a hundred thousand dollars!

Gemma was touched.

She said sincerely, "Even if you earned some money while you were away, you shouldn't spend it carelessly. You should save as much as you can. After all, Trey and I can simply take the bus, and there's no point in giving us such an expensive car!"

"I know you did it for us but next time, don't show your care with expensive gifts. You should learn from Mrs. Kent's son-in-law. Despite his annual salary being more than 200 thousand dollars, he bought a car worth just 30 thousand dollars, and he only occasionally takes Mrs. Kent to the restaurant. Yet, you gifted us a car worth more than a hundred thousand dollars, which is half of his annual salary!"

Turning her attention to the flabbergasted Mrs. Kent, Gemma said, "Oh, Mrs. Kent, why do you make that face? I'm just telling Adam to learn from your son-in-law. Please don't misunderstand. There was no other meaning to my words. I'm not showing off, and I'm not thinking of comparing myself to you. So no need to overthink, dear.

"Ah, our car is still blocking the way. I'm sorry for that, as it inevitably delayed your meal. Trey, move the car somewhere else, okay? Mrs. Kent, please be patient. Trey hasn't driven a car in a long time, so he might be a little slow with the maneuvers. You should back off so as to avoid damaging your new BMW 5 Series in case something goes wrong."

Mrs. Kent and her son-in-law were at a loss for words.

With red faces, they shifted into reverse and backed away.

At this time, Gemma's phone rang.

"Oh? The deal was closed, and you secured part of the capital? And there's going to be a celebration party this evening at Macchiavelli's, you say? Very well, we'll be there soon."

A smile bloomed on Gemma's face.

It was dusk, but the streets were brightly lit. Katie, Peter, and Matilda stood in front of the restaurant and greeted the guests.

After going through untold hardships, they managed to close the deal and get their hands on an initial investment of 15 million dollars. Dave was so happy that he immediately threw a party at Macchiavelli's. Aside from friends and relatives, he invited several of Lisle's businessmen.

Of course, it was not only to show off. There was another reason for it.

Luxury cars stopped in front of the restaurant one after another. Old men alighted from vehicles and headed inside, their faces all smiles.

"Mr. Washington, you're here. Come in please."

"Mr. Doyle, how are you? Thanks for coming."

"Mr. Payton, please take a seat inside. My grandfather is having a chat with the others."

Peter and Matilda warmly greeted the guests.

As for Katie, she awkwardly stood next to them, unable to chime in. She was an ordinary employee until not too long ago, and she knew the businessmen that had come today only by name.

"Hehe, do you still think that you're qualified to manage this project? Do you know where to buy building materials, or whom to contact if you want to start the construction? You should know your limitations and step aside. If you do that, perhaps you can still somehow participate in the project. Otherwise... Hmph, you'll just disgrace yourself," said Matilda with a sneer.

Katie sighed, not knowing what to say. Everything Matilda had said was the truth.

At this moment, a brand-new BMW 7 Series sped over. Katie wanted to greet the guests, but Matilda stepped forward first, shoving Katie aside.

"Get lost. Grandfather told you to greet the guests, but the only thing you're doing is making the Hartleys lose face!" cursed Matilda.

When the car stopped, Matilda walked up to the rear seat's car door and opened it to help the guest alight the vehicle.

"Hello, thanks for com..."

Her voice trailed off mid-sentence, and an expression of pure disbelief appeared on her face.

In the next moment, she shrank back and screamed, "How could it be you guys!"

"Sis, what's going on? Which guest gave you such a scare?" Peter furrowed his brow and walked over.

"...Trey?" Peter was also surprised.

"What's with this car? How did this happen?" asked Peter in disbelief.

He thought it might be some important guest, but it turned out to be Trey and his useless family.

Trey alighted the car with Annie in his arms. He then explained with a flushed face, "Peter! This car... is a gift from Adam."

"Adam?"

Peter turned to look at the driver's seat. At this moment, Adam was also alighting from the vehicle.

"It's a gift from that guy? How was he even able to afford a car?" Peter found it hard to believe.

"Mom, Dad, what's happening?" Katie walked up to them, asking with a puzzled expression.

With a blushing face, Trey recounted the story one more time.

As soon as he finished, he heard Matilda laughing out loud.

"Hahaha... Haha... Phew, I almost died of laughter. I don't know if you're naive or just stupid. Do you really think that this wretch can afford this kind of car?

"Do you know how much this model costs? Including the import tax, it should be around 500 thousand dollars! Do you think he can afford such an expensive car?

"If he had so much money, would he bother following your daughter around? It's pretty obvious that this car is just rented!

"Wasting money just to show off, huh? The rent for this model must be at least 500 dollars per day... I don't understand, what's the point of acting big at your own cost?" Re... Rented?

Trey and Gemma were shocked

500 thousand dollars?

Wasn't it only around 100 thousand dollars?

Soon, the old couple understood what was going on.

Matilda's words made sense. There was no way Adam had 500 thousand dollars, and it was impossible that he could afford such an expensive car. There was only one possibility-the car was rented. "Huff! And here I thought you were sincere when you said those words earlier.

"I did not expect you to deceive us with a rented car. Why did you do it? Do you want us to pay the rent?

"Tomorrow, I'll have my daughter file for divorce!"

Gemma was furious as their good-for-nothing son-in-law had shamed them one more time.

Trey sighed and whispered, "It's fine. There's no need to get this angry. Although it was wrong to rent a car, he helped us out earlier. Just now, weren't you also..."

"Shut up! He only has himself to blame for not being very capable. If he had some skills, would he still have to rent a car to show off? Look at the sons-in-law of other people, and then look at him..." "Mom!" said Katie with a frown.

She had more or less understood what was going on. Although she did not agree with Adam's methods, she knew that he was just trying to help. He did not want to hurt her parents, and it was fine to let go and spend money once in a while...
