Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 185
"Is that crazy woman still alive? I'm glad to hear it."
Adam knew Maya had deeply traumatized Lucas, so he did not continue with the subject. Instead, he said, "The Chamber of Commerce of Lisle is now divided. What's your take on it?" Lucas pursed his lips and said, "My perspective? I'm sure you can find it in my brain somewhere if you dig hard."
Adam was at a loss of words. "Can you be serious?" he said powerlessly.
In the army, other than generals, no one would dare to tease him. What's going on? Why does this guy keep trying to test my patience?
Lucas shrugged and said, "What happened to you? You are not the same guy I used to know. I just got here, so I don't know anything about the local Chamber of Commerce. I need time and intel before I can make an informed opinion about them. Why are you so concerned anyway? Does it have anything to do with you?"
Adam smiled grimly and said, "My wife is the new president of the new Chamber of Commerce. When I picked her up in the afternoon, I found out the Camdens have colluded with the old members to attack all their businesses including my wife's company." Lucas was caught by surprise. He blinked and asked, "Camdens? Where are they from?"
"They are the main players in the Chamber of Commerce in Alameda County," Adam replied mildly.
Lucas was stunned. He cursed and said, "Damn, are the Camdens onto you already?"
Adam raised his brow and asked, "Should I be worried?"
Lucas suddenly did not know what to say. Moments later, he finally said, "You rock."
Adam shook his head powerlessly. "The Camdens are nothing. My wife did not want me to get involved, so they got lucky."
He continued, "The Moodys from Lancashire have been destroyed. Send men to take over their property. Oh yes. I have just killed the heir of the Banks from Lancashire. Coordinate our resources and focus on them from now on. Find out which families have close ties with them since they have clues about the massacre. Also, the Hamiltons of Alameda County are our allies. They belong to the Chamber of Commerce. Enrico is the enemy. That's all you need to know for now. I will apprise you as we go forward." Lucas looked at Adam dumbstruck. He asked in a serious tone, "Rabbit, are you joking? Are you still trying to pretend that you're some bigshot?"
Adam frowned yet again.
Lucas sighed and said, "You must be joking, right? We're childhood friends. Even though you can't compare to me, you don't have to feel a sense of inferiority. Between the two of us, I'm the one with brains. Since these people are in the business world, it's going to take more brain than brawn to finish them off. It's completely normal for an uncivilized man like you to feel intimidated. Considering our relationship, you don't have to feel lousy about it." Adam was speechless.
Lucas continued, unfazed, "You have my word. Even if I'm better than you, you will always be the boss. I won't ever try to steal the limelight from you."
Adam laughed coldly and said, "Black Monkey, are you getting cocky? Do I look like a frail old man to you? If only you knew the truth, I promise you wouldn't have spoken to me this way."
-
Since they had just reunited, it was only natural that they went for a drink and caught up. However, Adam sent Lucas back to the villa an hour later and headed back to the hotel. He was mainly worried that he might not be able to control himself and might punch Lucas in the face.
He did not tell Lucas he was Drake the Dragon. Firstly, the matter was confidential. Secondly, he was afraid Lucas might say he was bragging again!
When Adam got back to the hotel, Annie had already gone to bed. Katie was sitting on the couch frowning as she went through some documents.
While he was out of town, Leroy Ortiz had already gathered the Chamber of Commerce to attack the business. Even though the Hamiltons were already involved and had helped with the Camdens, it was still hard on Katie. They were elite families from the capital, so they were naturally well connected.
The Camdens kept plotting against them but failed. On the surface, they seemed small and weak. In reality, Adam was far more powerful than them many times over. He was so powerful that even the richest man in the world would think twice about being rude to him. In comparison, the Camdens were like puny ants to him. If he got involved, it was just a matter of time before the family met its end.
"Katie, you really don't have to work so hard." Adam picked up a blanket and placed it on her as he spoke.
Katie put down the documents and stretched. "Welcome back." She glanced at Adam. "Don't worry. We already saw this coming and it's still manageable. This is all temporary. If I really need your help, I will ask you for it."
Adam shook his head and sighed. He knew exactly what Katie was thinking.
Katie wanted to prove her worth, so she kept working hard to gain experience. She wanted to be his equal one day. He reckoned he must have given her too much pressure.
Adam sat down beside Katie on the couch. When he reached his hand out and held her by her waist, he could not help wanting more.
He drove the R-rated images out of his mind and said in concern, "Even if you don't want my help, there's no harm in me giving you some ideas, right? I might be a general, but I am also your husband."
Katie was very moved, so she raised her head and kissed Adam.
Just as Adam was about to kiss her longer, she shrank away from him. She said, "In business, the four areas we can compete are using products, operation, service, and price. If I want to outdo them using these factors, it's going to be a long-drawn battle. The Camdens clearly have no patience for this. What they really want is to take us out in one fell swoop. This way, it would make them look good. In my opinion, they would never come at us using the traditional methods... Hey! I'm talking to you about work. Watch where your hands are going!"
A hand was quietly inching up to her chest, but she slapped it aside and continued, "Since they want to take us out as soon as possible, I doubt they'll use traditional methods to attack our business. Instead, they'll choose something different such as using a corporate spy against us. They can also get to us using their connections. They might even try to cut off our funding."
Adam nodded. "You're right. What do you plan to do about it?"
"Stop fooling around." Katie glared at Adam and said in a serious tone, "Since they're going to use extreme methods, I'm sure they are illegal. I can wait for them to go through with it and then catch them red-handed."
Adam pondered for a couple of seconds. "It's a great idea to use their plot against them. But even if we know they're going to do something illegal, it won't be easy to catch them red-handed. Are you sure you don't need my help?" Then, he quickly added, "You came up with the idea, so I'll take orders from you. I'm just trying to help."
Katie contemplated briefly and did not turn down the offer. She said powerlessly, "I have no intentions of destroying the Camdens. I just want to stabilize the situation at the Chamber of Commerce."
Katie was a very intelligent woman with foresight. Adam came over and bit her earlobe gently as he said, "It's getting late. Now that we are done with work, we should..."
"Let's go to bed then."
Adam was at a loss for words.
