Episode 34

Watching him intently, Elizabeth thought of nothing but how brazenly deceitful he was—pretending to be a devoted husband while clinging to his first love.

The man she once cherished now evoked nothing but revulsion.

With a scoff of disbelief, Elizabeth locked eyes with him.

“Mr.

James, do you truly believe money solves everything?”

Elijah opened his mouth to reply, but Elizabeth interrupted sharply.

“You’re trying to buy off the role I’ve poured my heart into, just to hand it over to Sandra.

And now, you’re flaunting money to either appease me or intimidate me.

That property you’re offering is worth a fortune, isn’t it? You seem ready to sacrifice anything for Sandra.

Is your love for her really that profound?”

Their heated exchange drew the attention of nearby patients, who turned their heads toward the disturbance.

Flustered and visibly uneasy, Elijah grumbled, “Elizabeth, what absurd nonsense are you spouting?”

But Elizabeth’s smile only widened, her tone heavy with biting sarcasm.

“Am I wrong? Why must everything bend to your will? Why do you assume I don’t need this opportunity? Don’t I deserve a chance at my own aspirations?”

Elijah’s expression hardened as he spoke, the lines on his face deepening.

“I’m doing this for your good.

It’s been two years since you’ve had stable work.

How do you expect to thrive in this industry?”

Elizabeth’s thoughts immediately wandered to Sandra.

Was Sandra somehow more capable? But then she realized—Sandra had Elijah’s unwavering support, something she had never received.

Elizabeth resolved not to waste energy arguing with Elijah.

It was clear to her that altering others was futile; the only transformation she could manage was within herself.

She couldn’t force Elijah to treat her like Sandra, nor could she make him love her.

But she could detach herself from the emotional turbulence of hope and despair.

With a calm yet pointed tone, Elizabeth addressed him.

“Today, I have truly understood the extent of your devotion to your beloved, Mr.

James,” she said, her smile tinged with bitterness.

“Since you are willing to go to such lengths for Sandra, why not make it official and make her Mrs.

James? What’s stopping you from signing the divorce papers? Are you content keeping the woman you treasure confined to being the ‘other woman’?”

Elijah’s patience wore thin, his tone sharp with irritation.

“I never said I wanted a divorce.

You’re being utterly unreasonable,” he retorted, striving to maintain his composure.

“Elizabeth! I’ve endured enough from you already.”

Finding his self-righteousness laughable, Elizabeth erased the smile from her lips, replacing it with a chilling blankness in her gaze.

“Let go,” she said flatly, the finality in her voice unmistakable.

With a fierce glare and an unyielding stance, Elijah declared, “Take my offer and step down from the lead role.

If the property isn’t enough, name your price, I’ll…”

Elizabeth had reached her limit, weary of reasoning with someone so obstinate.

Further dialogue seemed futile.

Without another word, she lowered her head and sharply bit into his hand.

“Ow!” Elijah yelped, the pain forcing him to loosen his grip immediately.

Seizing the opportunity, Elizabeth wrenched her hand free and dashed away.

“Did you just bite me? What are you, some kind of animal?” Elijah shouted after her retreating figure, eyeing the angry mark on his wrist.

After a brief pause, he shook his hand in frustration and decided not to chase her.

The phone’s ringtone pierced the air.

Elijah turned away, answered it abruptly, and demanded, “What now?”

On the other end, Oliver hesitated, sensing Elijah’s foul mood but unsure of its cause.

“Mr.

James, it’s about Mrs.

James…”

Before Oliver could continue, Elijah, still fuming, abruptly ended the call.

He scanned the area—no sign of Elizabeth.

Pulling down his sleeve to hide the bite, he strode toward Sandra’s hospital room.

Back in the office, Oliver stared at the disconnected call, then at the report in his hands detailing Elizabeth’s injuries from an earlier accident.
