Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 445 Two Phone Calls
When Stellan popped the question, she got all jittery, feeling like something bad was about to go down.
"Yeah, sure. I got something about you." Neil stammered, more on edge than during his usual cases, and blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "I heard that Nexus Innovations is going back to work. Saw it on the news, congrats!" Anyone with half a brain could tell he was making it up. Determined to keep his secret, no matter how Stellan pried, she wasn't getting anything out of him.
"Oh, that. Yeah, work started back up a while ago. Thanks for the concern, Officer Neil. If you need Alaric, just call the home phone."
"Got it. Thanks. You take care, Stellan," Neil added.
"Okay." Stellan hung up.
She was ready to hit the sack, but Neil's call had her wide awake. What was he hiding from her?
Since it was Neil, it had to be about a case. Could it be tied to Marigold's fall?
Stellan wondered, 'Is Neil still on this case? Has he been suspecting me all along? Or is this Alaric's doing?'
No way! It couldn't be!
Even if Alaric was digging for evidence, he'd never team up with Neil on this.
She told herself, 'Stellan, don't let your mind wander.'
Stellan turned off her phone and forced herself to sleep.
After the call, Neil kicked himself. He slapped his mouth and took a moment to shake off the awkwardness before dialing Alaric's home phone. This time, he played it smart and waited for Alaric to speak first.
"Did you give your phone to Stellan? She picked up when I called earlier."
"Yeah, I did. She was worried I'd get distracted and not rest well. I'm mostly home during my treatment, so I gave it to her for peace of mind."
"Neil, you called the home phone, so it must be important, right?" Alaric sounded uneasy.
"It is," Neil said bluntly. "I won't waste your time, so I'll get straight to the point. Today, a woman came to the station. She said she was Hestia, a former maid of Marigold."
Alaric's heart skipped a beat. He'd been on edge for days, and now his worst fears were coming true.
"And then?" Alaric tried to stay calm. "Why did she come to see you?"
"She said she saw Marigold fall down the stairs. She saw Stellan accidentally push her."
Alaric clenched his fists. He couldn't believe Hestia had gone to Neil on her own.
Or was she bribed? Otherwise, why would she dare?
"How is that possible?" Alaric had lied before, and despite feeling guilty towards Neil, he had to stick to his story. "Two other maids saw it. My mom lost her footing, so there can't be..." "Alaric," Neil cut in, "you weren't there. You didn't see it. Don't you want to know the truth?"
"The truth is what the two maids said before. My mom lost her footing. This new maid claiming my wife pushed her? That's just nonsense!"
"But now we've got two different stories, and I need to figure out what's what," Neil said, his determination not surprising Alaric. "Alaric, I want to be lenient because we're friends, but I can't ignore the law."
"If Stellan accidentally killed someone and then lied about it, that's a serious crime. I'll have to hold her accountable. And if the two previous maids lied, they'll also be held responsible."
"Of course, I'm hoping this new maid, Hestia, is just making stuff up and falsely accusing Stellan," Neil added.
Alaric wanted to say something but hesitated. He sighed, "I get it."
Neil felt he was right but also felt a bit harsh towards his friend, so he softened his tone:
"Alaric, I know about your health. Seeing you last time, I felt really bad. I don't want to reopen this case, but new clues have come up, and I can't ignore them."
"It's your job, and you have your principles. I understand." Alaric paused, considering his words carefully. "Neil, go ahead and investigate. I just have one request. Don't disturb her unless you have solid evidence." "I understand. Alright, Alaric, you should rest."
"Neil!" Hearing Neil about to hang up, Alaric quickly said, "Let me know if there are any updates."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Alaric felt dizzy. Mia hurriedly asked, "What's wrong, Mr. Knight? Are you feeling unwell? I'll call the doctor right away."
"No need," Alaric immediately refused. "I'm fine. Go back to what you were doing."
Saying that, Alaric went upstairs, entered the bedroom, and closed the door. Seeing his state, Mia frowned in confusion.
Just then, the home phone rang again. Mia quickly answered; it was Stellan.
After Neil's call, Stellan couldn't sleep. She thought Neil would definitely call Alaric, so she couldn't help but call back to ask. "Mia."
"Stellan, it's so late. You haven't slept yet?" Mia asked.
"I'm about to. Was there a call at home just now?"
"Yes, Mr. Knight just finished a call. It seemed to be from Neil. I don't know what they talked about, but Mr. Knight seems very upset after the call and went to the bedroom alone." He seemed very upset after the call?
"How is his health? Is he feeling unwell?" Stellan asked anxiously.
"It seems so."
Hearing this, Stellan's heart tightened. Mia quickly added, "But don't worry, Stellan. I'm here, and we have a doctor on call. We'll take care of him."
Just then, Stellan heard some noise behind her. She quickly said, "Okay, if he feels unwell, call me immediately."
After putting down the phone, Stellan saw Rowena waking up. Rowena had vaguely heard the phone conversation and quickly said, "Stellan, is Mr. Knight feeling unwell? You should go back. Don't worry about me."
