Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 380 "If You're Here to Condole, I Appreciate It. If Not, Get Out."
Cormac: [Go ahead and catch some Z's. We're heading to the Knight Manor today and won't be back for a while.]
Rowena saw Cormac's message and turned to Stellan, "Cormac's off to the Knight Manor with Mr. Knight. Looks like he won't be back until after Marigold's funeral. Stellan, you haven't been sleeping well these past few days either. Get some rest. I'll handle the kids."
Stellan just shook her head, "I can't sleep right now, Rowena. You should go back. I'm good."
"How can I just leave you like this?" Rowena said, pulling Stellan into a hug. "Stellan, I know you're feeling down. If you need to cry, just let it out. No one's here to judge."
Caspian, Harry, and Elisa had been quietly hanging around since they got back, not daring to say a word.
Stellan was feeling awful. After hearing Rowena's words, she couldn't hold it in anymore and started crying.
"I feel so stupid, so incredibly stupid," Stellan said, hating herself. "Why was I so dumb? Why did I lose my mind and run to the Knight Manor as soon as I got the call from the teacher? Alaric was right. I should have told him. I should have let him handle it, but now..."
"It's not your fault. Who could've seen this coming?" Rowena said, patting her shoulder. "Don't overthink it. Things are what they are. Mr. Knight is reasonable; he won't blame you."
Stellan couldn't say anything more. Things were already messed up, and talking about it wouldn't help.
"You three, don't stay up with us. Go get some rest," Rowena told the kids.
"We're not sleeping. We're staying here with Mommy," Elisa said, snuggling into Stellan's arms.
"I'm not sleeping either," Harry chimed in. "We're all staying with Mommy."
"Yeah, Mommy, we're all here," Caspian added.
Seeing them, Stellan felt a bit better and said, "You don't have to stay with me all the time. Tomorrow, go find your daddy. As for Marigold's funeral, I won't be going. She was your grandmother, so you must go, understand?" Marigold was a big deal. Now that she was gone, Stellan knew Alaric would give her a grand send-off. The kids had to be there.
The three of them nodded, "We get it. But Mommy, you're not going?"
"I don't want to go, and I can't go." Marigold's death had made her a suspect. How could she show up at the funeral?
"We understand. We'll go to the funeral, comfort Daddy, and try to keep him from being mad at you," Caspian said.
Hearing this, Stellan felt a bit better and said, "Your daddy didn't argue with me. It's just that your grandmother died, and he's in a bad mood. It's understandable. Don't make him angry, and don't say anything bad about your grandmother in front of him, okay?"
"Okay," the three said together.
"Alright, you don't need to stay with me. Go get some rest, or I'll get mad," Stellan said.
Caspian nodded. "Okay, I'll take them to bed. Mommy, you should rest early too."
"Alright," Stellan said, ruffling his hair affectionately.
As the kids hit the sack, Stellan turned to Rowena, "Rowena, you should get some rest too."
"I'm good," Rowena replied, "Cormac's with Mr. Knight. I'll stick around until Marigold's funeral is over and Mr. Knight gets back."
Stellan gave a bitter smile. "Thanks."
"No need for that. We're tight," Rowena said, "Remember when I was getting roasted online? You stuck with me the whole time."
Stellan didn't say anything, feeling wiped out both physically and mentally. Eventually, she couldn't keep her eyes open and crashed, but it was a restless sleep filled with dreams.
In her dreams, Alaric was pissed at her, Neil was giving her the stink eye, and Marigold's face was twisted with anger, like she wanted revenge.
Stellan finally jolted awake from the nightmare, and Rowena, who was sleeping next to her, quickly got up and flicked on the light.
"What happened? Bad dream?" Rowena asked, seeing her drenched in sweat.
"Yeah," Stellan said, wiping her forehead, "It's always some kind of nightmare."
"Then forget it, don't sleep," Rowena said, sitting up in bed, "Let's chat or do something to take your mind off it."
"Are you and Cormac dating?" Stellan asked, not really in the mood to talk but knowing that sleeping meant more nightmares and spacing out meant more overthinking. She forced herself to talk about something else. "Yeah," Rowena said, "We're dating, and we're already hitched."
"Already married?" Stellan was genuinely surprised. "That was quick."
"Yeah, it was fast. We're not getting any younger," Rowena said, "I was hoping we could have a wedding together."
"I've thought about that too," Stellan said, surprised at Rowena's similar thoughts. But now...
Stellan continued after a brief pause, "But now, with everything that's happened, who knows when we can have a wedding. Looks like you and Cormac will have to go first."
Rowena realized she might have said the wrong thing. Seeing Stellan's expression, she gave a bitter smile and said, "Alright, Rowena, there's no need to force the conversation. We can't avoid this topic."
Rowena stayed silent, just quietly keeping her company.
The date for Marigold's funeral was set. The Knight family was a big deal, and a ton of people showed up. Everyone who got an invite came, and there were even some crashers.
"Former director of the Vale Group, Stuart, and current director, Ambrose, are here to pay their respects."
Hearing their arrival, Alaric's face instantly darkened. Were they here to kick him while he was down?
Stuart and Ambrose laid flowers for Marigold, bowed, and then walked over to Alaric.
"Mr. Knight, I'm sorry for your loss," Ambrose said.
"The accidental death of your mother is indeed a sad thing, but it's nothing compared to my pain," Stuart said mockingly.
Hearing this, Alaric's face grew even darker, and he replied, "If you're here to genuinely pay respects, I appreciate it. If not, then get out!"
