Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 26 Remember Your Reaction Now!
In an instant, his hands caressed her body, and with a tantalizing kiss, she was like a little boat in a whirlpool, hopelessly losing her bearings.
She allowed him to lead her deeper into the vortex's core, falling further and further into its grasp.
Subsequently, her body involuntarily arched in a curve, her entire being seemingly seized by a spasmodic heat.
Galatea could feel her temperature rising, seduced as if under the influence of some intoxicating substance. 'What's happening? Rational thought had evaporated, her flesh seemingly yearning to be consumed by fire, overwhelmed by a desire that refused to be suppressed, and then-'
At the crucial moment, he stopped, stood up, and looked down at her with a smile that seemed almost mocking.
"Galatea Hartley, so stubborn with your words, but your body tells a different story. Still claiming you don't want me?"
Her face twisted in a silent scream of rage, more stinging than a physical slap.
'That man was just taking his revenge just now!'
"Remember your reaction just now, and don't you dare play innocent with me again," Alaric said as he rose and straightened his clothes. "Although our relationship is a farce, we have to put on a good show. Cross me again, and I'll take you to bed, but I won't be responsible for the aftermath."
"Alaric, you jerk!" she yelled at him furiously.
"You have fifteen minutes. If you keep lounging in bed, you'll be late for work," he reminded.
Galatea panicked when she saw the time. She quickly tidied her clothes, combed her hair in haste, and rushed out the door.
Galatea now stood at the street corner, waiting for a cab. Alaric, in his limited-edition sports car, deliberately pulled up right in front of her.
"It's hard to hail a cab in the suburbs. Need a lift?"
"No!" Galatea asserted firmly, preferring to walk to work than get in the car with him.
Alaric scoffed, his intentions were obvious, yet she kept up her pretense.
With a press of the accelerator, Alaric zoomed away, glancing in the rearview mirror after some distance to see Galatea anxiously checking her phone and scouting for a ride, a smirk of mischief on his face before hitting the gas even harder. "Alaric, you lunatic! When I find my son, I swear, I'm giving you a taste of your own medicine before I leave!"
She had thought about waiting a few more days to talk to Galen about accessing the archives, but she couldn't wait. She needed to find out what happened to her son-and fast. She had to get away from the man with a troubled mind. Continuously getting entangled with him could lead to far worse scenarios than being seduced - with someone like Alaric, who could lose control, the public wouldn't have many options.
As Alaric had pointed out, this place was a nightmare for hailing a cab. She walked a long distance before finally catching one, arriving at the hospital over thirty minutes late.
"Sorry, Director, traffic was awful today," Galatea apologized as she rushed into the morning briefing.
"It's okay, traffic jams happen. We all get it."
"Yeah, we know," her colleagues chimed in, sympathetic to her plight.
But honestly, Galatea would have preferred a severe lecture; or a pay cut for her tardiness. It would have made her feel less awkward about the whole thing.
So, she had to find her son and end this messy relationship-soon.
So, after lunch, she strengthened her resolve, and walked into Galen Archer's office.
"Galen, I need to ask you a favor," Galatea said.
"Galatea, just tell me what you need. Are you unhappy with your current position?"
"No, I'm very satisfied with it. It's not about work," she hesitated, then continued slowly, "It's about an old friend of mine. About six or seven years ago, she had complications during childbirth at our hospital and didn't make it. I want to look into her medical records."
She had been on the verge of death during her delivery and insisted on having a natural birth under the orders of Mrs. Marigold, and the doctors had no choice but to comply. After delivering the first child, she lost consciousness. Mia later recounted the harrowing details of her labor to him. Both her life and her baby's were at risk. The doctors had eventually advised Mrs. Marigold that insisting on a natural birth could have led to a devastating outcome for all three involved.
The official paperwork pronounced both the mother and the newborns dead at delivery, mirroring the clinical notes. In truth, Mia's desperate pleas and her life savings had swayed the doctors to carry out an urgent cesarean, sparing her from death. Yet the official records, uncorrected, listed her as deceased-this was something she preferred anyway.
"Look up a case from a couple of years back?"
"Is that possible, Galen?" Galatea implored him, her voice laden with urgency. "My friend was an orphan-I thought she and her baby were gone. But word has it, that a child had survived. I need to check the records and find out where that child ended up, and make sure that they're okay, for my friend to rest in peace."
"All right," conceded Galen. Being in Alaric's favor, Galatea's request was hard to deny. "I'll make a call. Just head over to the records room."
"Thank you so much, Galen!" Galatea couldn't contain her joy.
Leaving Galen's office, she made a beeline for the records room. Galen's call had smoothed the way, and she accessed the archives without a hitch.
The records held the attending physician's name and details of the birth a four-pound baby boy. 'If we're talking triplets, then the eldest must bear a striking resemblance to Harry.'
She took note of the doctor's name, it was Aminta and headed to the maternity ward to inquire. Dr. Aminta had transferred elsewhere, four or five years prior, so Galatea then approached several veteran obstetricians and nurses. "Do you recall a woman named Stellan from six years ago? She was pregnant with triplets, but only one baby survived. The mother and the other two passed away. Do you know what happened to the surviving child?" she inquired. The team shook their heads collectively. "We see several mothers a day. It's impossible to remember them all," they answered.
Galatea paused for a moment, to consider her next move. "If the others can't remember, then surely Aminta must, right? After the whole Mrs. Marigold incident, it must have made quite an impression on her. So, the priority now is to track down that doctor and inquire about either her son's or Mrs. Marigold's whereabouts."
With a clear objective in sight, her motivation surged.
Meanwhile, her mischievous children were busy hatching their own schemes.
