Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook -
Chapter 246
? ? ? ? ?
Raegan was taken aback by Mitchel's suggestion of a temporary marriage.
She wondered why Mitchel had chosen her, when so many others would have jumped at the chance to be by her side, even if it was just for a day.
Mitchel looked at Raegan with quiet intensity and explained, “My grandfather's health is declining. "The doctors say he has less than two months left."
Raegan felt as if her world had just shattered.
The Dixon family was not known for their warmth, except for the love she received from Mitchel's grandfather. This news was a devastating blow.
Overcome with grief, Raegan stammered, "I can keep pretending to be your wife..."
Mitchel's rejection was immediate and firm, his gaze on her cold and distant: "I don't want that."
Raegan was surprised by his stoic response.
"I can't lie to you now."
His reasoning sounded valid, but Raegan couldn't shake the feeling that she was falling into his trap.
“But…” Raegan began hesitantly.
Mitchel interrupted her, his expression becoming more severe: "This new marriage is only for my grandfather's sake, of course..."
After a brief pause, he added indifferently: "They don't force you."
Your options are to marry me again or sleep with me here.
Raegan felt her cheeks burn, caught between two undesirable options.
But thinking about her grandfather made her accept the first option for three months.
He spoke up, with a hint of determination in his voice: “Let's keep this a secret. I don't want Luciana to find out about our new marriage. And after three months, you will divorce me, right?
Mitchel's nod was cold and distant.
Raegan felt a slight relief and continued, “So, let's sign both the prenuptial and divorce papers now. "We'll save ourselves the trouble in three months."
Raegan handled the situation with a businesslike approach, treating it as a mere transaction. His attitude seemed to awaken something in Mitchel.
He noticed a hint of disgust in her expression and her eyes took on a colder tone.
However, she went ahead and headed to a nearby photocopier to print out the divorce agreement, insisting that Mitchel sign it after her.
Mitchel gripped the pen tightly, almost tearing the thin paper of the agreement.
He hesitated for a moment before signing with a quick movement.
His face remained expressionless and distant throughout the entire process.
For some reason, Raegan felt a pang in her heart watching him sign so easily. It was a subtle, growing pain, as if invisible needles were pricking her.
For a woman, marriage was often seen as a new beginning, which made these types of decisions especially difficult.
But Mitchel could divorce and remarry her without hesitation, and his indifference seemed to be due to a lack of love.
Their reconnection was tied to a mere agreement, which left Raegan with a heavy heart.
Mitchel's mood darkened and he lowered his voice as he said, "Let's go in."
Frustrated, Raegan replied, "I only have my ID card. "I don't have my birth certificate."
He had already tried to locate his birth certificate to no avail.
Mitchel calmly responded: “I have it. "I have brought all the necessary documents."
Surprised, Raegan asked, "How do you have my birth certificate?"
Mitchel responded calmly: "You left her when we got divorced."
"Why didn't you give it back to me then?"
“I forgot,” Mitchel said nonchalantly.
Together they entered the building and quickly completed the paperwork.
Each one had in their hands the certificate that symbolized their new marriage.
Raegan was full of doubts, feeling deep down that this hasty decision was a mistake.
In retrospect, Raegan would view this decision as a grave mistake. He often wished he could go back in time to prevent his younger self from making such a naive mistake.
Mitchel quickly snatched the marriage certificate from Raegan and put it and her copy in the car compartment.
Raegan, bewildered, said, "Shouldn't we each stay?"
Mitchel smiled satisfied.
"I'll keep them with the divorce papers so they'll be easy to find later."
Raegan admitted that his argument made sense. Separating the certificates could cause inconveniences.
Later, they visited Mitchel's grandfather, who was delighted to see them.
After the visit, Raegan had students to teach. Mitchel decided to leave her at her destination.
During the ride, Mitchel kept an eye on him. He parked the car and closed the doors, his expression serious.
“What do you have in mind?” Raegan asked.
Mitchel looked solemn.
«You are now a married woman. Regardless of your past with Henley, you need to understand this. As long as we are married, any contact with him is prohibited. Do you understand? »
“Okay,” Raegan agreed immediately. He had no intention of contacting Henley.
Mitchel's expression softened slightly at his quick agreement. But he couldn't resist asking, “Why did you agree so easily? Aren't you afraid of being hurt?"
Raegan felt the need to clear up any misunderstandings from earlier.
"To be honest, there was never anything between him and me."
Raegan didn't feel like delving into this topic. After all, Henley once saved her life, and she believed it was best to leave the past behind.
As Raegan was about to get out of the car, Mitchel suddenly grabbed her hand.
His voice, deep and hoarse, asked, "What do you mean by that?"
"Just what I said."
His grip tightened, making her uncomfortable. Raegan tried to pull away, wanting to escape the tension building between them.
But Mitchel held on to her and his voice showed a hint of vulnerability.
He hesitated, the question hanging in the air, his anxiety evident.
Typically self-controlled, Mitchel seemed to lose his composure when she was around.
His proposal to remarry, under the guise of a pretext for the sake of his grandfather, hinted at a deeper motive. He couldn't stand the thought of her being with someone else.
Raegan felt her anxiety rise under his unwavering embrace.
«Let me out, please. "I'm late."
"Why such a rush?" Mitchel asked, locking his eyes with hers for a moment before leaning closer to her.
In the small space of the car, their faces were very close. Raegan could see every detail of his dark eyes, rimmed with thick lashes.
His eyes caught the light of the streetlights, shining like stars in an immense sky.
Suddenly, Raegan's heart began to beat furiously, as if it were going to burst out of her chest.
Time seemed to stretch, turning their impending kiss into a prolonged scene, their lips drawing closer to each other until they almost disappeared.
Raegan was stunned, realizing too late that she should have avoided this situation.
But now they were too close, the air around them charged, their thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and chaos.
Just before their lips touched, Mitchel pulled away and whispered in her ear, "Wish us a happy life."
A low, resonant chuckle emanated from the back of his throat.
Raegan's face turned red with embarrassment. Mitchel must have wanted to make fun of her. Sure enough, he had taken every opportunity to tease her.
Feeling both embarrassed and irritated, Raegan quickly opened the car door. Without saying a word or even looking at him, she quickly got out of the car and drove away.
In the hospital room.
Jarrod's intense gaze fixed on Nicole's pale face. He watched her without blinking, absorbed in his thoughts.
If Nicole could see him now, she would mock him for feigning deep emotion.
But only in those quiet moments, with Nicole asleep, did Jarrod let his guard down and show his true feelings.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed, breaking the silence.
Walking out into the hallway to answer, Jarrod learned from Alec that two women who had hurt Nicole had been released on bail by their families.
The two women were Howe people.
Worse still, Howe had intervened to stop any investigation against those two women.
As Howe was Jamie's brother, Alec asked Jarrod for instructions on whether they should investigate further.
Jarrod's eyes turned cold.
"Keep investigating," he ordered.
The call ended. Less than thirty minutes had passed since he left Nicole's living room.
Just then, Jamie saw Jarrod and ran over, tears in his eyes.
“Jarrod, how could you embarrass my brother because of that bitch!”
“Jamie!” Jarrod's voice sounded, low and cold, devoid of any hint of a smile.
