Chapter 1641:
? ? ? ? ?
Jarrod pressed his lips together for a moment and said, “It hurts.”
Nicole began to wonder if Jarrod was exaggerating his condition, but his pale face looked genuinely unwell. His skin was clammy, and cold sweat was on his forehead. The wound on his back felt damp, possibly reopened.
Because the wounds from the acid attack were filled with pus and no blood, Nicole was not sure if the wound had actually reopened.
Remembering his selfless act of protection that day, Nicole felt compassion. She spoke more gently: “Don't force yourself. Let me help you. Be careful.”
Jarrod leaned against her, careful not to breathe too loudly. It had been a while since they had been this close. Nicole's subtle scent was soothing, almost therapeutic. Jarrod felt no pain at the moment.
Nicole Jar helped rod back into bed and adjusted it to a more comfortable height.
As Nicole was about to leave once again, Jarrod quickly said, “Nicole, I’m hungry.”
Nicole suspected that his fall might have been intentional, especially now that his hand looked too injured for him to feed himself. “Where’s your caretaker?” she asked.
"I don't have one. Conor usually helps me," Jarrod said.
Nicole, visibly frustrated, replied: “Why don't you hire a caregiver? “I’m sure you can afford one.”
Jarrod replied, “I prefer not to have strangers around.”
Nicole said, “Then wait for Conor to come back. “I’ll call him.”
Nicole called Conor, and her weak voice answered the phone. “Miss Lawrence… What’s wrong?”
Nicole asked, “Conor, when are you coming back?”
Conor's response was hesitant. "Miss Lawrence, I'm having stomach problems and my legs are feeling weak. I may need an IV. Could you please give Mr. Schultz his food?"
Jarrod secretly admired Conor's quick response. Conor's improvisational skills were truly impressive.
With no other choice, Nicole reluctantly picked up the spoon to feed Jarrod.
Jarrod ate with concentration, quickly consuming half the bowl of congee.
Nicole said to her, “You have a table full of nutritious foods, and yet you choose to eat this simple congee.”
Nicole bought the congee for Rhett yesterday because he had a high fever and needed something light and not greasy. However, Jarrod needed more substantial food. This congee was too plain for his needs.
Jarrod said, “I was curious about the congee you bought for someone else.”
Nicole was surprised and asked, “Have you investigated me?”
Jarrod replied, “No, Conor told me. “You were taking care of Rhett but you didn’t visit me, and you even bought Rhett congee.”
Jarrod's voice carried a genuine tone of complaint.
From last night until now, Jarrod had not felt like eating anything other than the congee that another man had enjoyed, brought by Nicole.
Nicole was aware of Jarrod's tendency to be petty. To avoid any potential problems for Rhett, she explained, "I took care of Rhett because he got hurt helping me. It was pretty bad. He suffered a lot because of me, so I felt obligated to take care of him."
“You're very kind,” Jarrod said, his voice thick with sarcasm.
