Chapter 1640:
? ? ? ? ?
Unbeknownst to her, Conor had sent the bodyguards to create this very opportunity for Jarrod.
Seeing no other option, Nicole knocked on the door, ready to deliver the congee.
A deep voice from inside ordered him, "Come in."
Nicole opened the door and walked in. Jarrod was engrossed in the report at hand, unaware of Nicole's presence. Assuming it was Conor, he said without looking up, "Leave it there."
Nicole looked at a table laden with untouched food, then glanced at the congee in her hand. Jarrod seemed to have a sudden craving for congee. The shop looked familiar, reminding her of one she often visited.
Without thinking twice, Nicole put down her soup and, seeing that Jarrod still didn't recognize her, she started to leave. Just then, Jarrod looked up and called out uncertainly, "Nicole?"
Nicole paused and turned to him, explaining, “Conor wasn't feeling well, so he asked me to bring this to you.”
Jarrod paused and said, “I thought you came to see me.” His voice had a hint of complaint.
Nicole was speechless. Since she was already there, she felt compelled to say something: “Why aren't you eating? If you don't eat, your recovery will be even slower. “Austin is very worried about you and keeps asking when you’ll be coming home.”
Nicole was being honest; Austin seemed to think highly of Jarrod. During their visits, she had heard Austin ask about Jarrod twice. Austin tended to be reserved and rarely showed interest in others.
Jarrod replied, “My wound hurts. “I’ve lost my appetite.” He seemed very upset.
Nicole, not convinced, said, "Doreen is your family. You took the hit, saving her from worse punishment."
Nicole was telling the truth. Without Jarrod's support, Doreen would never have dared to act so recklessly. Jarrod deserved the punishment.
Jarrod said, “Yes, I have spoiled them too much. “I will not interfere in your affairs again.”
Nicole wasn't there to listen to his justifications. They didn't really have much to discuss. She said, "You should eat the congee and get some rest. I'm leaving now."
Just as he was about to leave, Jarrod began coughing violently, the loud sounds worsening his back injury and leaving him looking especially tortured.
Unable to just walk away, Nicole poured him a glass of water and offered, “Drink this.”
Jarrod looked at the glass, realizing that Nicole had a soft side to him.
Noticing his face flushed from coughing, Nicole assumed he was still struggling to breathe and said, “Drink water first.”
Jarrod accepted the glass and drank some water. The water helped him feel better.
After putting down the glass, Nicole said, "Go ahead and eat. I'm going now."
Jarrod kept a poker face and remained silent, and Nicole turned and headed for the door without waiting for his response.
Just as she was about to leave, a loud “thud” sounded behind her. Jarrod had fallen out of bed.
Nicole turned around and saw his tall figure lying on the ground, his complexion pale and looking very weak. She ran to his side and asked, “Can you stand up?”
Nicole was puzzled by Jarrod's sudden weakness. He had seemed fine just moments before. How had he fallen out of bed?
