Chapter 1617:

? ? ? ? ?

Jarrod choked back his pain as the sulfuric acid mostly hit the ground beside him, although some splashed onto his back.

The unmistakable smell of flesh eaten away by sulfuric acid was intense.

While anyone else would have succumbed to the pain, Jarrod merely moaned softly, stoically enduring the agony.

Nicole was so close to him that she heard the muffled moan.

The unexpected incident shocked everyone present.

Amidst the chaos, Rhett had pinned the crazed Doreen to the ground just before security guards swooped in to seize her.

Doreen had only pretended to be insane, driven by deep resentment. She had hoped to disfigure Nicole and get away with criminal charges for pretending to be insane.

However, the plan backfired when sulfuric acid splashed on Jarrod.

Terrified by the consequences of her actions, Doreen was speechless for a long moment. It was not until she was pinned to the ground that she began to sob: “Jarrod… Help me. I didn't want this to happen. Jarrod…”

With a grim expression, Jarrod stood up and carefully helped Nicole to her feet.

After making sure Nicole was standing, Jarrod asked worriedly, “Are you okay? Did any of the sulfuric acid splash you?”

As he spoke, Jarrod examined Nicole closely. To him, Nicole was a priceless treasure that must not be damaged.

“I’m fine,” Nicole replied, her voice still shaking.

“Really?” Jarrod asked, his concern evident.

Nicole shook her head, and Jarrod sighed in relief, confirming that she was indeed unharmed.

I'm glad. That's good, he murmured, relieved.

Meanwhile, Doreen continued to scream behind him: “Jarrod, ask them to let me go… I'm in so much pain. Please stop!”

Jarrod turned to look at Doreen, struggling to reconcile the image of the girl he remembered with the person before him.

Doreen was no longer the innocent, vibrant girl he once knew.

“Doreen, you've disappointed me,” Jarrod said, his voice filled with mixed emotions. He hadn't imagined that his own family would try to hurt Nicole, not to mention the baby she was carrying.

Had he not protected Nicole in time, regret would have haunted him forever. He realized then that he could no longer excuse Doreen's actions out of family loyalty.

Doreen felt a flicker of fear, but it was quickly eclipsed by her confidence in Jarrod's leniency towards her.

She was sure that her tears would bring about his forgiveness, as they had so many times before. No matter the prank, Jarrod had always been there to dance her out.

This pattern had emboldened her to act with arrogance.

Doreen cried out pleadingly, “Jarrod… Jarrod. I didn't mean to do that. I'm sorry. Please don't be angry…”

This time, however, Jarrod was unmoved by her tears. He coldly ordered the security guards: “Do what you have to do.”

Jarrod's directive was clear. The security guards were to hand Doreen over to the police.
