Chapter 1557:
? ? ? ? ?
I just watched her.
A chill ran down Nicole's spine. Jarrod always seemed to be in charge, staying one step ahead of everyone else.
“I didn't drug you,” Nicole explained. “Jamie's poison is hidden in the third drawer of our bedroom. You can go check it out yourself.”
Nicole had never intended to drug Jarrod. She knew better than to put her trust in Jamie, a person whose motives she had understood all too well.
Jamie and the mysterious people behind her had set their plans in motion. Nicole was not going to be easily caught up in their plans.
He only agreed to bid his time and give Jamie a false sense of security while he tried to uncover the mastermind behind it all.
Nicole planned to reveal the mastermind's true identity and motives.
Jarrod's expression remained stoic. Her confession didn't surprise him. “So you didn't drug me because you didn't fully trust Jamie, right?”
Nicole didn't say anything. Jarrod was too smart for his own good. Trying to fool him was nearly impossible. However, she had no intention of fooling him. The truth was always a bitter pill to swallow.
“You're right. I didn't trust Jamie. But that day in the valley, I really didn't expect you to get hurt. With your skills, I figured you could avoid it. “I never imagined Alec would get hurt trying to protect me.”
Nicole wasn't lying. Fate had played a cruel hand. She hadn't wished anyone harm that day. But fate had its own plans. Alec's injury had thrown everything into disarray.
Jarrod looked at her and asked, “Apart from that day, have you ever wished for my death?”
“Yes,” Nicole replied without hesitation.
Nicole maintained her composure as she spoke.
"I understand that many of the problems between us, including grievances against our families, may have been due to misunderstandings. However, even if they were just misunderstandings, the pain they caused was real."
Nicole couldn't just erase the hurts of the past just because Jarrod had made some changes. Doing so would diminish her, as if she deserved all the suffering.
“Jarrod, do you really think I can just forget? The best thing you could do is let me go. “It would be better to never see me again than to try to keep me tied to you.” Nicole got straight to the point.
“Do you want me to let you go?” Jarrod's face was unreadable, devoid of emotion. “So what? You’ll run away with Roscoe and take my son with you?”
"I'm not getting married again," Nicole said. She understood that Jarrod was the kind of person who held on to things, unwilling to let them go, even if he no longer wanted them himself.
Jarrod laughed coldly. “Nicole, how can I trust you now?”
Trust was no longer part of their equation. Jarrod knew Nicole had been accommodating lately only to dig deeper into her father's case, Roscoe's affairs, and for Austin's sake. None of his actions were for him.
Jarrod had tried to fool himself, but Nicole's desperate attempt to save Roscoe had shattered his illusion. If he continued to fool himself, he risked losing everything.
Jarrod stared at Nicole, his dark, deep eyes reflecting a deep melancholy. “Nicole, don't mention that man again. Avoid any contact with him, or I can’t predict what I’ll do.”
His threat carried a chilling promise.
