Chapter 1542:
? ? ? ? ?
To reassure Roscoe, he said confidently, though it was a lie, "It's okay. I think I can manage."
With no other choice, Nicole bit her lip, squeezed her eyes shut, and gave a sharp tug on her bound hand.
A horrible tearing sound came out as the skin on his hand was torn. His scream, deep and guttural, echoed through the forest. “Ah!”
Roscoe, distressed by her scream, asked anxiously, “Nicole… Nicole… Are you okay?”
Being tied back to back, they couldn't see each other's struggles, which increased Roscoe's concern.
After catching her breath, Nicole slowly opened her eyes.
His hand was almost free, but the skin on his wrist and the back of his hand had been horribly peeled away, revealing a raw, bloody wound.
Blood dripped incessantly, a terrifying and nauseating sight…
However, fear outweighed horror. Being half free meant that he had to face the unbearable pain again.
The intensity of the pain nearly overwhelmed her, but withdrawal was not an option. The urgency was critical.
The fire consuming the chief's corpse was dying out and the parasites were getting closer.
The parasites' fear of the flames had kept them away, but as the fire faded, they would soon venture closer.
The arrival of a single parasite could trigger a devastating attack. Nicole and Roscoe, still immobilized, would become living nests for these creatures.
Just thinking about it I felt a shiver of terror through Nicole, an outcome she was determined to avoid at all costs.
With renewed determination, she gritted her teeth, closed her eyes, and continued to free her hand.
Nicole's scream echoed throughout the valley, sharp and clear. The sound was so intense that it almost conveyed the excruciating pain.
Roscoe's heart ached deeply as he muttered, "Nicole..."
His words felt empty, unable to alleviate even a little of her torment. Overcome by a feeling of helplessness, he loathed his own inability to help her.
Nicole teetered on the edge of consciousness, biting her tongue to stay alert. After a brief moment of silence, she realized that she was running out of time.
With a trembling effort, Nicole lifted her bloody, skinless hand to free the other.
Ignoring the intense pain, he managed to free one hand and quickly began to untie the bonds on his legs.
Suddenly, a parasite, attracted by the blood, scampered towards Nicole. Although it moved quickly, its youth prevented it from crawling.
If it had been seven days old, it would have been able to fly away and would have stuck into Nicole's flesh.
Nicole felt the parasite approaching, panicked. Her hands fumbled with the restraints, but it was too late.
The parasite reached Nicole's feet and began to crawl up her leg. She tried to push it away, but the parasite, an expert at burrowing, was relentless. Desperation filled her.
At that moment, a burning stick landed at his feet. The flames destroyed the parasite instantly.
For a moment, Nicole felt calm take over her. She looked up to see a figure approaching briskly, dressed in a tight jacket.
Even from a distance, Nicole could recognize his imposing stature. It was Jarrod. How had I found her here?
