Chapter 1527:

? ? ? ? ?

Now it was Nicole's turn to feel wary. Could the old man's child be a girl, possibly even a witch?

Fortunately, that was not the case. The old man said seriously, “My son is a boy. He was taken away by that white-haired old hag. “She denies it, but I am sure she was responsible.”

Nicole began to piece things together little by little. The old man had discovered an abandoned baby in a pile of rubbish on his way down the mountain. The baby was cold and purple. When she unwrapped the small blanket that had wrapped him, she saw that he had been born with only one hand.

He took the baby to a rescue center, but they turned him away, insisting that he should be sent to an orphanage.

The old man, who had been living in the mountains for years, did not know how to contact the police for help. However, the baby seemed to choose him, holding on tightly to his sleeve with her only hand, without crying or making a fuss.

Moved by this, the old man decided to take him up the mountain to raise him. When the boy grew up, he was healthy despite being missing an arm, and his laughter filled the old man's house on the mountain.

The old man began teaching the boy to read and write, with plans to send him to school outside the mountains when he was older. However, he was worried that the boy might be bullied at school.

The boy seemed to love life in the mountains and showed no interest in going to school. He preferred hunting with the old man to reading and writing, and showed little talent for academics, so the old man did not push him.

They lived happily and self-sufficiently in the mountains, with sufficient supplies from selling their game in town.

From the time he was a child, the old man warned him never to venture to the other side of the mountain, where the Valley of the Witches was. He always told him that there lived man-eating witches who took children away.

This warning had a solid basis. There was once a village at the base of the mountain, between the two peaks. It was small, but had several dozen inhabitants. One day, after a visit from people from the Valley of the Witches, the villagers began to mysteriously disappear. Eventually, the entire village disappeared.

At first, the witches invited the villagers to visit the Valley of the Witches. Later, they used some kind of magic to bring the villagers there voluntarily.

The old man had a friend from the village who also disappeared. Determined to discover the truth, he explored and found human remains on the border of the Valley of the Witches.

Terrified, he fled, but not before witnessing the white-haired witch performing a ritual. The animals leapt into a blazing fire like mindless puppets, seemingly under the witch's control.
