Chapter 1488:

However, Jarrod's fierce independence made it clear that Vicki fell short of these needs. Opting for a high-value project was a more reliable option than gambling on an unpredictable relationship.
Wayne's voice softened slightly. “Yes, you offered me a project as compensation, but you must realize that accepting it was as much for your peace of mind as it was for ours.”
Jarrod's expression changed sharply at Wayne's words. It was clear that Wayne's words had tactically twisted the event in his favor, treating Jarrod with disdain in an attempt to get more out of him. Unfortunately, Wayne had gotten the wrong person. Jarrod was not inexperienced. He had overcome numerous challenges over the years and understood the intricacies of such scenarios better than most.
Jarrod calmly replied, “Mr. Hampton, I hold you in high regard because of your seniority. Your seniority in this field exceeds mine, but that does not imply my ignorance. You made a deliberate choice back then, weighing the advantages and disadvantages, correct?”
Jarrod continued: “You must realize that you could have turned down that very profitable project and potentially manipulated my feelings of guilt.
However, since you agreed to it, that meant our agreement was over. Over time, the Hampton family has reaped substantial profits beyond their initial investment. If you insist on bringing this up, I don't mind sharing it with the public. What do you think?
Jarrod's lengthy retort left Wayne speechless. Wayne had always recognized Jarrod's prowess. Delivering this speech while exuding calmness, Jarrod's words made Wayne shiver.
Despite this, with his seniority and experience, Wayne replied: "Mr. Schultz, you are insinuating that I am to blame in this matter. I am an older man, who approaches you with humility, and this is how you repay my gesture? Are you trying to endure my death?"
Wayne's last resort was to assume the role of victim. Given his age, mortality posed little threat if it was meant to safeguard his family's future.
He had realized that although his illegitimate progeny were numerous, the scandal surrounding his legitimate offspring, Lowe, would deal a devastating blow to the Hampton family's reputation and prospects.
If the scandal got out of hand, the Hamptons would struggle to produce any worthy heirs and maintain their position in the business world.
As a result, Wayne decided to protect the younger members of the family at all costs. He regretted having crossed paths with Jarrod, who was anything but ordinary.
Any other opponent could have been easily dealt with using traditional means. It was unfortunate that Vicki had fallen under Jarrod's influence.
Wayne, based on his extensive experience, discerned which individuals were accessible and which were best avoided.
