Chapter 1484:
? ? ? ? ?
Just then, the cab driver announced their arrival and Nicole gathered her thoughts. Her tasks were loaded, including investigating her father's death and helping Roscoe. She decided to tackle them one by one and unravel what was happening.
As she stepped out of the taxi, Nicole looked around. Melissa's neighborhood was modest and somewhat run-down. The buildings were old and shabby, and the area around them was a mess.
Nicole tracked down Melissa's apartment using the address Jemma had given her. After repeated calls, no one answered.
Nicole called Jemma again. “Jemma, is Melissa at work?”
“No, that girl has been acting strange. She hasn't been seen for three days,” Jemma said. “Is anyone home?”
Nicole frowned. "No. I’ve been knocking on the door for a while now, but no one’s answering.”
“That damn girl, she didn't run away, did she?” Jemma said helplessly. “She still owes me $800,000.”
After Melissa caused trouble the last time, Lowe had helped pay off some of her debts because she served him well. Although Lowe had problems in certain areas, he found other ways to enjoy Melissa's company. Melissa knew how to please him, so he helped her financially.
Melissa hadn't fled because Jemma had her passport and ID. She was trapped. Besides, no one was willing to pay such a large sum for her. After all, her cosmetically altered appearance wasn't considered valuable.
Nicole replied, “Then I’ll go ask.”
Nicole tried to contact Melissa but got no response. No doorbell was heard from inside the apartment either.
At that moment, an elderly woman walking her dog approached and, seeing Nicole at the door, asked her: "Miss, are you looking for the young lady in this apartment?"
Nicole agreed and asked, “Do you know her, ma’am?”
"Yes, he'll rent it to me," the old woman replied. "What does he need it for?"
Nicole explained: “I’m her co-worker. She hasn’t been to work for a few days, so I came to check on her.”
"You haven't been to work for a few days?" The old lady looks surprised. "I haven't seen you around here for a few days either."
The old lady knew that Melissa worked nights and often came home late, while the old lady usually got up early, so their paths crossed frequently. It was strange that she hadn't seen Melissa lately.
