Katherine's POV

I sat tied up in a chair with bodyguards surrounding me.

I guess everyone thought I would go crazy or something.

John's gaze landed on me, and he looked at me confused. Did he think I would resist and give him a reason to send me directly to the mental hospital to lock me up forever?

I internally growled at John, feeling my insides burn out with hate, yet I didn't move one inch or show any discomfort.

The directors arrived a few minutes after John, and all of them kept half-puzzled expressions on their faces.

"Please understand that I have always regarded Kate as my own daughter, which is why I made this decision. She is out of control because her share of the company's stock has already fallen below a certain limit. After all, the public will not buy shares of companies led by seriously mentally ill people."

John sighed and wiped a stray tear.

"For the recovery of the company, I ask all directors to sign and relieve Kate from her duties and let her go to the hospital for her treatment. When the mental hospital confirms she is capable of resuming her duties, she can come back and take over again." "I think you are making a mistake; this is not a mentally ill person." One of the directors whispered in the crowd, loud enough for the people around him to hear.

"I second that," another director said. "I don't think Kate is mentally ill. I watched her grow up, and not once did her parents ever state that there was something wrong with her. Even if her parents' deaths affected her mentally, I don't think it has affected her mentally."

When John noticed that the situation was turning against him, he quickly added, "There are many kinds of mental illness. She may have random attacks. This book has many missing chapters and scenes if you're not reading it on [J]obnib.c[o]m. Before, nothing happened, yet yesterday she suddenly had an attack and injured herself. She has a wound on her head as proof."

The directors still didn't look convinced. One of them walked closer to me and whispered, "Kate, tell me, did you hurt yourself yesterday?"

My gaze moved over the old man's face, and I remembered him being at my parents' memorial service a couple of weeks ago.

"Elder Christopher, I didn't hurt myself," I calmly said. "The wound on my head happened during a quarrel with my uncle. There should be video footage in the response. You are welcome to go and see it."

With that, I gestured for him to move my hat and showed him the wound on my head. He nodded, smiled, and started to tie me.

"Christopher, what are you doing? You..." John yelled and hurried, and I stopped him from untying me.

"I believe what Kate is saying is true," he said, giving him a death glare. "I also don't believe that she has any mental illness. Whatever happened between you two is your problem, but I absolutely don't agree to let Kate go to that kind of institution!" "Christopher, you can't play with so many people's lives! She is lying!" John roared, "The camera system isn't even working; it has been broken for a while. She is clearly manipulating you!"

John glared at the security supervisor and nodded. The man immediately understood, raised his hand at the guards, and they stepped forward and dragged me toward the hospital van by force.

The directors became anxious, and several people blocked the guards' way.

"John! How dare you!" Christopher roared. "When your brother, the Alpha, died, we all took care of you. We let you run the company under the King's name. You have chicken feathers for direction, and we all hoped that you would find your way. Now, I warn you, if you dare to do anything to Kate, I will never let this go!"

"Christopher, I'm thinking about the safety of all the other directors here. I can't put other people in danger because of your emotions! Kate is my niece. I put righteousness above family loyalty. Why can't you do it as an outsider?"

Christopher's face turned red out of anger, and several other directors stood silent, unsure what to do or take sides.

Suddenly, the situation changed subtly.

John glanced at Christopher with a cold face and stopped pretending. He waved at the security guards, and a group of people rushed out of the corridor to stop Christopher and push me into the elevator.

I counted the floor numbers down as the elevator lowered from floor to floor. I have never felt this calm before.

John smiled proudly and watched my face.

"Kate, don't be angry at me. I am thinking of everyone."

John's face was full of pride, and he couldn't stop being happy at the thought of removing me, his greatest trouble.

I breathed a sigh of relief and spoke lightly.

"Uncle, it's unnecessary to pretend."

John glanced at me with a trace of praise in his eyes.

"Kate, you are really smart. Smart scares me. Sometimes I wonder if things would be different if you were my daughter."

I chuckled, amused, before I replied.

"Even if I were your daughter, even if the process were different, I can guarantee you that the ending would be the same." I met his gaze and smiled.

John became quiet as he stared at the elevator number.

When the last single digit hit, the excitement on John's face was visible.

I could see the sun hanging low from the windows. Xavier must have noticed that I had already disappeared.

I now understood why Xavier didn't want me to come to work, but would that have saved me from John's plan?
