39. Cold Shoulder

"Estella. You can now go and have a wonderful night's rest. And don't stress yourself about waking up early." Damon said.

Good morning, miss Katie. What would you like for breakfast?"

"Good morning Estelle. Please tell the cook I'm only having coffee this morning."

Damon's frown deepened as the housekeeper left.

"You should eat something, Katie. It's not healthy to......"

Damon, for heaven's sake. I'm 29, not 8. I know whether I'm hungry or not. Besides, I'm having lunch with long-time friends at one o'clock."

Her delayed arrival at breakfast and the fact that she wasn't eating properly were forgotten as he absorbed the fact that she was having lunch with her friends and he hadn't known about it. "Your friends? Why? And why didn't you let me know?"

"Damon, it's not like I'm going to run away and not return to you. They called and I agreed to lunch. I supposed it might have something to do with old friends' reunion which is my business, not you." "Still," Damon muttered," one would have thought of her security first."

"Why?" I challenged.

"Well, because........."

"I'm not a kid, Kate snapped, her voice rising with each word she spoke. I'm not disturbed, I'm not unbalanced, and above all, I'm not crazy.

Then she shoved her chair back from the table and stood abruptly.

"Have a nice day at the office, Damon. I have some sorting out and exercise to do." She added, knowing the last shot would infuriate him even more than he already was.

She walked out with her head held high, refusing to let him know how badly she hurt.

"Damn him, she muttered as she took the stairs back up to her bedroom." Damn all men to hell and back."

Immediately she left the dining table for her room, Damon was so infuriated that he smashed all the dishes on the table, and place a call to Alan.

"Alan. Make sure you increase the security profile around Katie. Without her knowledge of being stalked." Let me be the first to know who she meets, where she goes, and what she eats. Damon said with a frown on his face. "Mr. Cameron. Wait for me and taste how it feels for someone to give you cold shoulder."

The housekeepers rushed to the dining room to clear the crumbs and mess done by their boss.

Damon left the dining room for mine. But immediately he knocked and came in I could tell his having a hard time communicating something to me but I just act relaxed as if I am not hurt by the kidnapping and the trauma of being scared of the unknown.

"I'm sorry for acting so tense when you spoke about going for the launch with your old-time friends," Damon said.

"If that's all you came in here to say, have heard and you can leave me now" I replied to him.

"Wow! Can you hear yourself speak?" Do you have any idea as to who instigated your kidnap and what their agenda is?

"I guess you will be thinking I'm been paranoid over nothing." Before you hate me for what the reason might be always remember your safety is my top priority till after our wedding when you will finally be at liberty to do as you, please. "Are you done or have you still got more to say?" I said sarcastically.

I was about to ask him to feel free to tag along as my bodyguard to the launch when my phone buzzed.

"If you don't have any other lecture to present, can you now take your leave or do you care to eavesdrop on my conversation to be secure." I was so bent on infuriating him this morning.

Damon was speechless for a moment before he turned and left my room.

I saw the caller ID which happened to be my best female friend back then in college.

"Hello babe"

"What took you so long to answer your call," the caller said immediately after I answered.

"Sorry babes. Just having a bad morning that's all." I said.

"I tried calling you two days back but your phone was switched off."

"Babes, you won't believe me if I tell you why my phone was switched off," I said.

"You know me to be a gist freak right" she replied to me.

"Hmmmmm, do you remember the last time we were talking on the phone when you overhead someone knocking at my door right," I said. "Yeah"

"Ok, I was informed that I was to attend a dinner party that night." I was about to say something when my friend obstructed me.

"Babes, don't tell me you turned down the chance to attend that party?"

"Hahahahahaha, you've not changed a bit babes," I said laughing out loud.

"I can never miss a party for anything which you are aware of." She said.

"Do you still mind listening to me or I should just keep shut?" I said amidst laughter.

"Oh, sorry ride on captain," she said.

"I went for the dinner only to be kidnapped and taken to God knows where," I said.

"Babes, are you kidding me or you're trying to cover up your inability to hook up to a big shot," she said

"Babes, like seriously I'm not kidding you," I replied to her.

"What!" She exclaimed

"Yeah babes" I replied

"How did you manage to escape or pay the ransom?" she asked

"Babes, I was in a state of despair when the miracle happened," I said trying to cover up the details of the rescue.

"Miracle doesn't happen cheaply babes." She said.

"Hahahahaha, the good news is that I'm safe right," I said.

"Babes, let's have the launch later in the day," she said.

"I lied to someone that I will be having lunch with my old friends just to infuriate him," I said smiling.

"Babes, are you seeing someone?" She asked

"That should be another day's topic." I said laughing and added, "text me the address for the launch."

"Babes, I smell love around you." She teased me.

"Hope the bills will be on you?" I asked.

"Don't worry babes. The bill's on me and doesn't hold back your orders" it's been ages since we've last seen ourselves and lest I forget.

"The launch is been organized by our old school mate's for a reunion so the bills are settled." She said and dropped the call.

I was so thrilled about how I succeeded in making Damon mad with my words.

"Who would have thought my lies will turn out to be true."
