True Fated Marriage (Grace and Heinz) -
Chapter 1543
"That's why I hate myself now," Maria couldn't help but feel upset, "I really couldn't hold back. After I told Celeste off like that, she might be feeling awful right now."
"What did you say?" Liam looked at Maria and said in a serious tone, "Tell me. I'll help you analyze your words."
Maria met Liam's gaze. Was Liam worried that she insulted Celeste?
Was he worried that Celeste would be hurt?
"Stop overthinking. I asked you that so I can help you analyze the situation. That's all, nothing more," Liam knew why Maria was hesitating. He could read her thoughts. "The past is in the past. I wish you'd stop letting your thoughts run wild."
Maria felt somewhat embarrassed. Liam was able to see through her, through all of the thoughts in her mind. She grinned, "Heh, I'm sorry."
"Maria," Liam exclaimed, "Don't be so sensitive, okay?"
Maria nodded and explained, "The last time she told us that she broke up with Gary, I learnt that it was already their second breakup. They reconciled after the first one, but after that their relationship was rocky. They would sometimes be on good terms and sometimes not. All in all, I thought that they were being a couple of hypocrites, so I couldn't help but chide Celeste."
Maria told Liam everything and did not exaggerate anything. What she told him was exactly what transpired.
At first, she expected Liam to scold her after he heard it all. She never anticipated Liam to say what he said next.
"You're right. Celeste is the awkward and overly sensitive type. If someone does not set her straight, her relationship with Gary won't last."
Maria was extremely surprised to hear that. She stared at Liam, her expression showing her shock. She asked, "So you don't think that I went overboard? That I should have kept it to myself?"
Liam smiled, "Well, you did go overboard, but you're my girlfriend now. I am a protective man, and I want to protect you. It may be someone else's business, but aren't you Celeste's good friend? You want her and Gary to work out. That's why you went ahead and anxiously gave her a talking to." "There are no selfish motives behind what you said. You were doing it for their sake, so why should you care how harsh you were? The words you said will serve them well. I believe that Celeste will definitely understand."
"What's more, if I'm not mistaken, this is the first time you talked to her so harshly, right?"
Maria was overcome with shock. So Liam really did understand her. He spoke her mind and knew all the emotions she was feeling.
It was really Maria's first time scolding Celeste that seriously.
"Indeed, I was a little anxious. Furthermore, I know that Celeste is the type to put self-defense above all. When faced with difficulties, her first instinct is to hide away from reality, just like an ostrich sticking its neck into the sand. I just thought that I needed to drag her out of her comfort zone. If she doesn't face it, she and Gary will never get their happy ending. I really feel very strongly about this. I don't want them to separate."
"You have good intentions," Liam agreed, "Are you sure you are not just trying to protect Gary? He's your cousin, after all."
"He is, but that's not the reason I told Celeste off. I really think that Gary must surely be sincere. He came to London all the way from Boston. I just don't know why Celeste is playing hard to get."
"Well, from your words, it's clear that you're doing it for their sake, even if you did cross a line. There's nothing to regret," Liam comforted Maria, "Didn't you say that Celeste went back as well? That means that your words had an effect on her. What they do in the future is up to them now."
Maria nodded and sighed, "But they've all gone back now and I'm all alone in London."
Liam was taken aback and asked, "Are you lonely now?"
"It's bearable," Maria murmured softly, "I actually wanted to go too, but my father didn't allow me to."
When Maria said that, her tone was filled with disappointment and frustration.
Liam instinctively picked up on her emotions, so he comforted her again, "Your father isn't mistaken. It is Old Master Jones who passed away. The Northern City's customs dictate that a sole girl like you shouldn't attend such a funeral."
"I know. Honestly, I wanted to go back to see you too, Liam. I miss you," Maria expressed her longing for him.
Liam narrowed his eyes and replied in a hoarse voice, "I miss you too."
"Really? You miss me too?" Maria almost couldn't believe her own ears.
"I miss you very much," Liam gazed deeply at the girl on the screen. It had been over two months.
The two of them had been apart for nearly seventy days. He pined for her.
During the day, Liam felt alright, but he found it hard to sleep at night.
Besides just missing her, he inadvertently longed for her youthful body and the happiness they shared when they were together. They were all delightful moments that he cherished deeply. "Just wait a little longer. I'll definitely go back during the holidays," Maria gave a ditzy giggle, "Alright, go do your work, I need to study. Also, don't forget about the books I told you about, okay?"
"Okay," After hanging up, Liam called his local airlines and ordered, "Get me a flight ticket to London. I'll be there for around a week."
Meanwhile, Celeste finally returned to Northern City after four and a half years of being away from it. When she set foot in the city once more, her emotions were like a roiling storm. It turned out that she missed that place a lot.
Homesickness. Yes, that was probably what she was experiencing at the moment.
On her way back, she had been deep in thought. What Maria said was important, but it did embarrass her. On her way back, she reflected on her actions.
She was indeed like that. A girl with a terrible personality.
As the Jones' adoptive daughter, she had to attend the funeral. Not out of any emotions for Old Master Jones or the Jones family as a whole, but as a show of respect for Uncle Jones and Aunt Smith. That was the right thing to do.
Hence, she did not think Maria crossed any line.
When Celeste got off the plane, she sent Maria a message, "I have arrived in Northern City. Maria, thank you for snapping me to my senses. Don't blame yourself for anything. You were right. I'm glad to have a friend like you."
Upon seeing the message, Maria immediately replied, "I was perturbed for a long time. Thankfully, you're not blaming me."
Celeste texted in reply, "How could I? I know that you're the best. You were doing it for my sake. I'll take a cab to look for Gary. Don't worry about me. Have a good rest."
Only then did Maria feel merry once more. She thought to herself, "I'm so glad that she doesn't blame me for it."
In her happiness, she texted Liam instantly,
"Celeste isn't mad at me. Liam, I'm overjoyed."
At that time, Liam was at the airport. He had booked the earliest flight to England and received Maria's message there. Just as he was about to reply to her, he saw Celeste walking out of the airport. Startled, he hurried towards Celeste. "Celeste?" He called out.
Celeste was equally shocked to see Liam. She stopped in her tracks and greeted him back, "It's you. Why are you at the airport?"
Liam smiled and said, "I'm going to London to see Maria."
Celeste understood the situation at once and laughed, "Does Maria know about it?"
"She doesn't know yet," Liam said, "Don't tell her. I want to surprise her.."
"Okay, my lips are sealed," A thought crossed Celeste's mind. She added, "However, after you arrive in England, you should tell her that we met at the airport."
Liam was taken aback, but he immediately understood what she meant.
Celeste was afraid that Maria would misunderstand.
If she was told about their meeting, frankly and honestly, all would be good. However, if he kept it a secret, some misunderstanding might occur.
"Okay, I get you," Liam then asked, "Did you just get off the plane?"
"Yes."
Liam helped her call a cab. He told her, "Take care. I need to catch my flight, so I'll be going now. See you, Celeste."
"Goodbye, Liam," Celeste waved at him and left in the taxi.
While she was in the car, she took out her phone to call Maria after all.
"Maria, I didn't want to tell you this, but I think I really have to let you know," Celeste was afraid that since Liam had not informed Maria that he was going there, Maria might have something going on that would cause a rift between them.
